CHRISTMAS EXAMINATION, 1880. IXANDM:- (Un. T. LL. L. WILLIAMS, M.A., Late Scholar of Jems College, Oxford. late Moafaw at the Merchant Taflope School, Liverpool), WEAN MASTIM:- OWEN OWEN, B.A., Late Scholar of Jesus College, Oxford. ASSISTED BY SEVERAL COMPETENT TUTORS. (.f7¡\ I Having been asked by Mr Oweh to examine this school, it fives me much plearire. to report as fallows :-The pupils in the aenior eection acquitted themselves oreditably it English Grammar and Philology. Though a difficult subject for a boy to grasp, they all seem to hare a very fair notion of t,, and some have done very weU.? I might men- tion 8. WMismam, E. J. Cash, and H. Walford Davies. In the fourth division, C. J. Uttlehales obtained 90 per cent. of the marks in elementary grammar. In English History, too, spme have done exceedingly well, especially S. Williamson and others would have done very much better if they had only presented their mewers in a clearer and more methodical form; In geography the answers, with the exception of one paper, have been expressed in a clear tabulated form, hich is a great advantage to the examiner when looking over the papers, and is in many examina- tion a condition of success. The boys in the third division, with one or two exceptions, have given excellent answers in histoiy and geography; and I am inclined to thibk that their papers, on the Whole, show grec.ter promise than those of the Wnior section. In arithmetic, W. R. Evans, E. J. Griffiths, J. F. Williams/ H. Walford Davies, S. Williamson, W. Hamer, J. W. Jones, and O. I. LittleheHes deserve special mention. In ortho. gtag&y the tests were very severe, marks being deducted for mistakes in punctuation, capitals, and spelling; the tests were similar to those eet in the higher Civil Service Examinations.- All the pupils, throughout the school, with the exception of nine, obtained „ve«y high marks. S. M. Lewis, R. Morris, J. Edwards, II". B. Edwards, G. Parry, D. W. Evans, B. Williamson, H. Jackson, W. Bo Evans; E. J. Cash, W.Roberto, E. R. Davis, H. Walford Davies, and R. Evans deserve special mention—all having reached mere than 60 per oent. of the = obtainable. In the fourth division T. A. Lewis and J. Thomas obtained high marks in orthography. A prose passage was set as a memory test for the senior section, and, though I understand that this is a new feature in the ex- amination, all the pupils, with the exception of two, reproduced the general sense of the passage, and many of them the exact words. In English =i-Ao, all the pupils have written with a certain amount of facility, some have exhibited considerable care in UM construction of their sentences. Some have not been so suaeessfml, owing to having made their sentences somewhat too long. For mental arithmetic, H. Walford Davies, J. W. Jones, J. W. Williams, and J. A. Vaughan, from the third division, deserve men- tion. In Sacred History, W. V. Edwards and J. W. Jones, who answered every question correctly, deserve speaM commendation; tke class average in this subject was 54per oeat. The third division passed a very fair examination in the exposition of technical terms, especially W. Roberto, and H. Walfprd Davies. With regard to reading and recitation I would suggest the importance of clear and distinct articulatioi. Some of the pupils ought to bestow greater pains on their' handwriting, there are seven or eight who are far below the mark in this respect, whilst the great majority write a clear and legible hand. In Latin, J. Edwards, D. W. Evans, G. Parry, S. William- son, and H. Walford Davies have done well. In Euclid, B. Morris, E. J. Griffiths, and J. F. Wil- liams. In French, H. Walford Davies. I under. stand that some of the best boys in these subjects were in the Cambridge Local Kxamination at the time. I have been much pleased by the way in which the work is done. It is quite clear that each boy receives individual attention, as there are absolutely no failures in the school. Each boy, by his answers, shows that he has been carefully taught eachfgubj act, and it is a very satisfactory fea- ture that the general average is high. A few boys are mot pushed forward to the neglect of tlte rest, and the school will distinguish itself in the public examinations only when lb. Owen will have sue- ceeded in bringing the mass of the boys into a high state of efficiency. He does not care to devote all his energies to a few boys, and by mean* of them gain credit to the school. Every boy has the same care bestowed upon him, whether he h? a sharp or a dull boy. I have also noticed Wi great pleame that the English ltmi)je? e sacrificed for the sake of making a dt?«m)t special subjects. Each boy is well grMB?'m the ordinary English subjects; but it "one displays special aptitude for any, partiou ch of study, he (tan devote himself to it; gF" he is o?l i? to prepare for any special on, he will be better able to do so after he ? Jrst laid a sound (foundation by being wqlL<frMed in the ordinary øubjeeœ. TLL.L.?EtAIfS.M.A! I SENIOR SBOTION. # 1 SPECIALS. Davies, E. E. Vhrariis. J. 1 Kvtins, W. R. Griffiths, E.J. Griffiths. M.
