INJURED ALL WHITES. IWH-riso
INJURED ALL WHITES. I WH ri s o I I How Swansea Were Handicapped. i I HOWEL LEWIS RE- APPEARING. I t (By PENDRAGON.") I Several of Swansea's regular players I will be standing down from the team to oppose the L'.A.F. at St. Helen's to- l morrow. Rowlands sustained an injury I to the ribs wiJlo playing against Cam- bridge, and Hdfl Beynon is also hors de combat. R. Huxtalile damaged his thumb while working underground on Thurs- day, and much to his regret had to be a spectator at the match with the Light Blues. An interesting re-appearance will be that of Howel Lewis, who has not played since he damaged his shoulder in the Britonferry match on Oct. 5th. W. Bowen is also re-included. The play of W. J. Jeffreys at outside half will he watched with interest, for at Bristol, when he deputised Beynon, he was the star artist among the backs. The selected men are: Lull-back, W. P. Rees; I three-quarters (from) Howel Lewis, W, Rowen, E. Grey, F. C. Palmer, and L. I Buckland; half-hacks, D. J Bennett and W. J. Jeffreys: forwards (froii-i) Tom Parker, Tom Williams, Tom Morgan, Sid Parker, Marsden Jones, Alf John, D. J. John, A. Evans, H. Rawlings, and Alf. Parker. THE LIGHT BLUES, There was nothing about the play of Cambridge University against Swansea yesterday to suggest that they are a great side. They were beaten badly forward even when Swansea only had six men in the scrummage, and because of this their backs had more defending to do than any- thing else. Towards the end they con- tributed the two best passing bouts of the afternoon. One of these culminated in Saxon scoring. The other very nearly re- sulted in the s-ame player getting through. He eluded the Swansea centres, shook Joe Rees off, and was crossing the line yhen D. J John hurled himself at him and bundled man and ball out of play just behind the corner flag. The All Whites, of course, were hampered because of the accidents to Rowlands and Bevnon. For three parts of the game they had a for- ward on the wing, and while Beynon was off Alf. John piayed in the centre. CANDIDATES FOR CAPS. Perhaps the mo.t interesting feature of the match was the competition between Beynon awl Clem Lewis. The latter was at a disadvantage because of the failure of his forwards. A couple of the things which he did 1Jore the hall mark of the master. He made some of his old time openings, and was the inspiration of the movement which led -to Saxon gainin,- the 'Varsity's only try. Brynon had I much to (in, ,irci apart fi-oni iiil; srood run- I ning and kicking he was one of the best defenders on the field. His try was the I result of a clever individual eSort. I fancy that in D. J. Bennett, Beynon has i at last found a congenial partner. He is faster than Willie Jones, and he knows how and when to pass. Grey was the best of the Swansea centres, Jeffreys showing a pron(,.ne. to selfishness. Palmer showed plenty of determination when going for ( he line. Once he crossed, and everybody believed that' he,, had scored, but the referee ordered a ecrummage five yards out. Joe Rees WR5 a better full back than Wood whose proper place is in the three-quarter line. The Swansea forwards | worked well to a man, but I wa's especially struck by the improvement shown by Tom Aforgan.. Another player \.hf) often came into the pie'ure was Syd Parker. THE SWANS. Cygnd H writes;-T1.e Swans have a really stiff proposition in Brentford, whom they meet to-morrow on the ground j of the Middlesex club. Brentford navel done particularly well at home, where Portsmouth have been the only club to lower their colours. The Swansea men on the other hand, have done bettor away than at home, and as the side has under- gone considerable improvement in the last few weeks, there ig everv reason to be optimistic with regard to this tussle Should Swansea Town win, they will have j scored a great achievement? and the writer expeds nothing worse than a sharing of ) the Southern Lengne points. The Swans made tho journey by the 12 o'clock train j to-day. BiG LOCAL EVENT. Rivalry between the neighbouring teams of Ammanford and Amman United is us alive as ever, and next Saturday's tussle between them, on the Ammanford Recrea- tion Grounds is invested with all the glamour of a battle royal," and will, doubtless, result in a record gate. The Ammaniord committee had, probably, their eyes on that latter material fact when they billed the Valley opponents a? the only unbeaten second class team in Wales." But it is a fact that the United men have not yet tasted defeat, and will. thus, j have a precious record to maintain, and, possibly, add lustre to. And it would be superfluous to say that the Ammanford side (this year unbur- dened of all-records) will strive to achieve | something destructive in the way of smashing the record. What chance they have of succeeding is a moot point. They have the ground advantage, and will, probably, field at top strength, while the United men, on the, other hand, have beer, weakened by the of the excel- lent services of Joe Bees, the Swansea full- back: and of Garfield Phillips, who has sustained an accident in the works. In the circumstances, one can predict, with a fair degree of confidence, that, what- ever the result, the game will be pretty evenly contested. The following is the selected Ammanford team :-W. Griffiths; A. Rosser, J. Williams, W. J. Davies, and Dan Thomas; Albert Griffiths (cqpt.), and Emiyn PhiIIips: (from) W. J.Evans, Frank Davies. Tom Thomas, Roger Bar- rot i, e-Kn Howells, Cecil Isaac, Dd. Richards, Jim Richards, Evan Thomas. S. Davies, and D. J. Fowler. A VALLEY" DERBY." An important League Soccer match is down for decision to-morrow (Saturday), when Ystaiyfera wili be the visitors. Considerable interest is being taken in the match, as Pontardawe have not yet been beaten this season on their own ground. The 'Fora boys will undoubtedly do their utmost to deprive Pontardawe of their cherishe.d record, but there is no doubt that the home boys will be as keen as ever. There should be a record erowd. The following team has been selected for Pontardawei—Powell; Tinnings, Howells; Notman, P. John. Faulkner; Pearce leapt.), Harris. Aitess, Carty and E. Jones; reserves, Mo.seley, Jones, Bendie, and Hopkins. TEAMS FOR SATURDAY. RUGBy, Thfl following will represent Uplands K.F.C. against the United Banks R.F.C. at Singleton on Saturday:—Full-back, I. THE DRAMA IN TUMBLE.
THE DRAMA IN TUMBLE. It has been decided to hold, and a Committee is very hard at work organis- ing, a Drama Week at the Tumble Public Hall eiirl v in February. The gentlemen who have arranged the com- petition deserve well of the Welsh people uf Carmarthenshire, if not of the whole of Wales. The Drama in Waleo has been locked ■npon with suspicion often not without justification, but whilst repudiating pro- ductions of doubtful respectability nothing was done to foster dramatic art in Wales, although the very spirit of the etage was espr<\s.?ed in the Sunday schools dialogues, which are st'll a feature of Welsh "Cwrdd Cwarhn- Vsgol." The eld order is passing and already we have 0 number or coram one]able effoits by young Welsh authors- ()n l .i The drama movement in Wal"? ? only i? its, early ?tag?s, and mu"h of what is offered to the public is as yet ra?ber cTude end immature. The plays to be produced in February et the Public Hall are by authors of and the casts, of course, will b., •entirely Welsh. The competition will give a needed impetus to this new move- inont, and will help to do for the Welsh Theatre what Synge and Yeats h ive done for the Irish. It is to be honn;1 lbqf this iyiportant vmtiire. which has not been entered for any pecuniary proflt, will be amply justified. Each performance will commence at 7.30, so as to pioviclo facili- ties far patrons of drama down the Gwen- j draeth Vall8Y to be present.

I, VALLEY WAR TROPHIES. t Ex-Servlcemen and Ystradgynlals Council. At the Ystradgynlais Council meeting, on Thursday, Mr. Ben Williams, J.P., presiding, a letter was read from the local D. D. and S. S. branch stating that the letter from the Council regarding the war trophies had not been received with satisfaction. They also asked for a schedule of at the Council ofiice. Mr. Lewis Thomas said they could come to the Council office and see the trophies. The Council now agreed to send a-sch4. dule to the men. < I The Clerk (Mr. Jestyn Jeffreys) said ? that the big gun intended for Ystrad- gynlais h?d arrived at Neath, but a social truck would have to be requi- sitioned to bring it to Ystradgynlais. Mr. Wm. Thomas remarked, amid laughter, that they would have to ar- II range for a State entry hen the gun cajM to Ystradgynlais. Mr. Lewis Thomas: That's a matter for you at Ystradgynlais.
