Gwynne Owen, pastor of Greenfield Baptist Chapel, Llanelly, who has been away for some time undergoing an operation, has now recommenced his ministerial duties. At the welcome home tea which is to be given to the ex-eervice men belonging to Lloyd-street Chapel on Saturday, each man will be presented with a gold medal.

TERRIFIC STRUGGLE. Brother's Story of Maesteg Tragedy. George Ellis, an elderly collier, of Garth, Glamorgan, was charged before the. Bridgend magistrates yesterday with the murder of Mrs. Harriett Williams, at whose house he had been lodging with his brother, Thomas i The latter, giving evidence, said de- ceased had given him and the prisoner notice to leave, but they were all on the best of terms. Witness described the terrific struggle he had with his brother after Mrs. Williams had been shot and ha (prisoner) had wounded himself. The accused said, I have finished her if I have not finished myself." He further said, I was forced to do it." The deceased woman's husband said he believed the prisoner had harboured feel- ings of revenue Medical evidence showed that Mrs. Williams had died from a gun- shot wound. The hearing of the charge w ill be resumed to-morrow.

WHIST DRIVE. I ——. Brilliant Success ofi First Night. At seven o'clock the spacious ballrcon: was filled with players, and the eystem of playing in blocks" w/ts amply justified, as it dispensed with delay, and enabled the play to proceed, as it were. in relays. By eight o'clock aModst 400 JIlnt have participated, and Mr. Evan Hill and MrJ Frank Taylor, who were the chief M.C.'s of it-he whist drive proper, had a busy time, although infringements were rare. At 9.30 all the players had completed the 21 bands, and apparently the plnv I had been of a most interesting and high standard. I PRIZE WINNERS. DANCI NG I- I The whist drive proper now over, the rtfior was cleared for dancing, whilst those who preferred tho "knopk-out" compe- titions adjourned to the Commercial Room, where the tables had been laid for this novel competition. Messrs. Ivor Newman, Jack Harries and G? Hemmings were the I.C.'s for the dancing, and Mr. W. H. Citnniffe and Mr. J. R. The members of the Ladies' Com- mittee present were even more energetic and enthusiastic than the gentlemen, and the following ladies worked tirelessly throughout the evening: Airs. PAUPERISING THE EX-SOLDIER. Swansea Proposal to Prevent the Evil. Mr. W. F. Francis (secretary of the Federation of Discharged Soldiers and Sailors) and Air. Williams attended the Swansea Guardians on Thursday as a deputation with reference to notification | of admission of ex-service men to Tawe Lodge Infirmary. Mr. Francis said they came in no pÎl'jt ci bravado, Instructions had b;?ej? issued to the Swansea Board of Guar- dians to notify the War Pensions Com- j mittee of all cases admitted to the Work- house. They thought it hard lines that theb, men sliould be pauperised, and they wanted the Government to- take 1 full responsibility for these men. It was true that the Government allotted two beds in the Swansea Annexe where men could at least be retained until by ex- amination it had been found out whether they were suffering l'ixxm i- effecl-, of war service. He wanted the Uuajdian6 to assist in making the Ministry of Pen- sions accept their responsibility. Mr. Francis at-so referred to Article 15 of the Royal Warrant, which provides that widows of those service men whose death was not. due to service shall only receive 12 months' pension. Many of thoee widows would now bo forced to seek parish relief. They wanted the Guardians to assist. theiFt in making tho Government abolish this regulation. Mrs. Williams said she did not thmk any Board had doae more to stop this Sort of thing than they. She wa- sure the Board would do all in its power to induce the State. to take up responsi- bility. Eventually the Board decided that representatives of the Guardians should assist in forming a joint committee of Guardians and Hospital authorities to interview the Ministry of Pensions. It was decided to defer consideration of the position of ,the widows for a month.

CROSSING TRAGEDY. Signalman's Discovery at Foxhole. A tragic discovery was made by a eignaV man on the Whito Rock Crossing, Fox. hole, late on Thursday nIght. Walking along the Midland Railway Jine at about 11.0 p in., he came across a man lying on the rails, having evidently beea run over by a passing train. < He summoned aid, and the man, who wa, still alive, was taken to the Swansea Hospital, but he died there soon after admittance.
