40 YEARS'SERVtCE. I
40 YEARS'SERVtCE. I Ret:rement of Secretary of Fabian's I Bay. It was with mingled feelings of heart- felt gratitude and sincere regret that the members of Fabian's Bay Congregational Church, St. Thomas, received from their pnetor. the Rev. John Matthews, on Sun- day evening, intimation of the impending resignation of the secretary of that church. Mr. Evan Thomas. Mr. Matthows said that it was now 4.0 years ago since their oldest deacon. Mr. Thomas, consented to act as secretary. Ife could say with all sincerity that during the whole of that time a better or more faithful secretary than Mr. Thomas (who was fortunate in having had able assistance from hi* nephew, Mr. Evan Thomas, jun.), could not have been found. Mr. Thomas was now in his 80th year, and very naturally desired to leave the task to one of the younger generation. They had decided that eomefhing should ba done to mark the termination of such honourable service. There was not a better secretary in the whole of the Kingdom.

I MASS PRODUCTION OF BRITISH GI.ASS. ) Facts and ngrurea published a few days ago in a Lopt'on. contemporary, which deal with the growth of the American glass industry, lend special significvlce to the f&cheme of expansion which the biggest enterprise in this country, British Glasj Industries, Limited, is rapidly bringing to completion. In addition to havng acquired several well established glassworks, in which the very latent auto- matic machines are now being installed,' this company, which possesses vast capi- tal resources, is proceeding with the ex- tension of a modern gla.ss factory in Canning Town. London, and it is ex- pe(,¿ed that within A few months this factory will supply a very targe per- centage of the glass that is required. With every possible labour-saving device and automatic machinery, standardisa- ton of shapes a;nd jiz&s will be attained. ajid ultimately standardisation of mix- tures. from which the glaas is manufaf- tured, so that this will constitute a comprehensive effort to produce on a vaster scale and more cheaply than ever before. Additional advantages over im- ports from abroad will be found in the saving of fronts and of possible loss on exchange, while, above all a very la.rge new outlet for British labour is beitig provided. M&*)ti -n must &Lso be made of the company's close connection with the British Window Glns Company, Limited, the nrst important window glass producer h the United Kingdom, which ia idoptirg stmilar automatic n:i:achineryand labour-saving appliances.
