I The Day's Gossip.! Leader Office, Tuesday. I can see that the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery will develop into a popular resort for Swansea people this winter. The five years of war broke upon the committee just as they were contemplating the opening out of their usefulness in many directions, and now a fresh start is being I made in a number of interesting ways. For instance, the Turner Welsh drawings are now on their way down from the National Gallery. They have been on exhibition before in Wales, I believe, but this will be Swansea's first opportunity to see the collection. It numbers just 101 works, and although most of the subjects are North Walian, there are Turner sketches of Britonferry and Kid- welly, and some other points of imme- diate local interest in list. diate local interest in the list. I The Battle Photographs. I Another exhibition which will have possibly a wider appeal to the great mass of the people of the town will be that of British Battle Photographs. This is the largest of all the collections, and thoae who have seen it in London declare that it brings home the fact of war in a I, very forceful way. With moderate luck, the inauguration of the exhibition at Swansea will be the means of bringing to the- town a famous soldier; but of this I more anon. I A China Story. I By the way, Mr. Murray, the curator of the Gallery, toltl a strange story at tha committee meeting yesterday. Some time ago there was on exhibition a number of cases containing mre eliina. The exhibits were regarded as of such value, and were looked after with such jealous care by the London authorities, that when they were placed in position in the Swansea gallery the cases were locked and the keys taken back to London. But a peculiar vibration is felt all over the Glynn Vivian Gallery, caused largely, no doubt, by the passing tram and other road traffic and very gradually a most- valuable china exhibit in the case was moved four inches by the vibration until, in the end, it was perilously near the edge of the shelf. No one was able to place it in safety, and ultimately a man with the key actually came down from London to open the case and place the exhibit once more in safety. But the most piquant feature about the three was their attire. The Citisens' Union annual meeting at the Central Hall on Monday after- noon revealed a keenness of conviction on moral questions and a desire to get something done on well-defined and ob- vious lines that no summarised report could convey. Four things were men- tioned in the admirable report of Mrs. Watkin Williams and Mrs. Gregory as being imperiously necessary in Swansea: The re-opening of the creche with which the name of Lady Mond will always be associated; the provision at the earliest possible moment of a maternity home for unmarried mothers who have fallen for the first time; clubs for little girls; and good mixed clubs. For the two first Sister Osborne and Nurse Steele made heartfelt convincing appeals, in which, it transpired that girls have had to go to Cardiff to work because nowhere ui Swansea, at a cost within the means of a working girl, can her child be cared for while she follows her employment. The search for such homes lias been a very discouraging business. It was stated, too, that lack of early assistance that might have been effectual leads to I a revolt when it is offered later. I should not be surprised to hear of more women municipal candidat next time as the result of this meeting. The new presi-, dent (Mr. Sidney Palmer) has decided views on the point. I Ben In the U.S. A friend of mine whom I have long re- cognised a.8 an admirer of American journalism. a weakness which I long go forgave him for on acconnt of his many other good qualities, drew my attention to a leader published in an American newspaper about a fortnight ago It is an eulogistic appreciation of Ben Till^tt, who of course is at proscnt travelling in the New World, and I judge that from the tone of this article he is very popular on the other side of the herring pond." Dealing with the 1917 election at Nortii Salford/ the writer says: "The people of North Salford demand ginger before everything else. They got what they wanted, of course, all the Allies got it, but it first came to North Salford in the person of Benjamin Tillett. The. hero of the dock strike of 1889. the fiery labour leader of many parts, the one i ime brickyard worker, merchant seaman, i naval seaman, docker, and organiser of the Dockers' Union, the man who from tho first day of the war had thrown him- self into the struggle on behalf of the Allies with all his acu-stomed and more than his accustomed prodigality of effort —this was the man in whom was to bo found ginger indeed, and he was the I man for North Salford." 1 I Why Pussyfoot." We learn from one of the periodicals that in his early life he was employed as a detective, and while so employed that he earae by the name of Pussyfoot. This name was supposed to have been insti- tuted by the Mo ni-thiners of America, owing to friend Johnson's unexpected calls upon them Liter, we hear, that Mr. Johnson became a journalist and afterwards a lay minister. Afier many vicissitudes he attained further notoriety 1 (or fame, if thatc ie preferable) by turn- ing Am-arica dry.

INFLUENZA'S LEGACY. I How to bispel It. I Influenza, which in itself is a distressing I malady, more often than not loaves in its wake a train of bodily and nervous weak- nesses which render life hardly worth liv- ins to the sufferer. After the recent epi- demics of this disease there must be an incalculable number of people who are striving to do their daily work fighting all the time against this weakness of body, blood, and nerves, the dread legacy of in- fluenza. These people would value health and vigour as they never did before, and it was for their benefit that Miss Gladys Knight, 115, St. Leonard's Read. I A FALLACY. 1 I Reduced Production. I I (By a Labour Correspondent). { On every hand one hears urged the I necessity for hghe-r production. Statesmen, newspapers, books, company report6-a 1>1 iirge production in season and out of eeason. Is it as necessary as it said to be? First, let us look at the doctrine that the less work (1-n, the more it leaves for others, to do In a sense it is true. but not in the- sense an which intended. Work means the making of certain things, say, for example, boots. If plenty of boots are made, there will be enough to go round to supply our own wants, and a surplus over to tend abroad. Now apply the' less vork doctrine. J,;(>9$;S produced, none is exported, and probably there is not a sufficient supply for the needs of the country. And where does the more work go to ° To competitors j abroad who can see the folly of such ideas, and are eager to profit by it. Boots become dearer at home and we have to buy at increased prices from the foreismer I WORK MAKES WORK. I I The doctrine should rather ty" thp more work done, the more it leaves for others to do." Work m.kN> work. Work enlarges the market; work brings down prices; work increases the comfort of the community. There is no fixed and definite amount of work to be done in any one country. Work ;s one of these elastic things which grow or dwindle almost, 8It will. In times of prosperity there's work and to 6pare for all; th" times of adversity are largely due to work refused and oppor- tunitrefc neglected. Novel was the chance of work greater than to-day. The ravages of war have to bo made good- the destruction of capital has to be restor-d: trade is waiting for us as soon as we can seize it. But we're not doing it fast enough- We're resting on our oars after the stress of war, in- stead of settling down to the task that lies before us The task is obvious—set our house in ordej and work. The nation could not pay its way in wa.r time, but in time of peace it must. We have lived by borrowing long enough, let as now live on the surplus of our own produce. We must not be put off by specious tiMorres which don't meet the case, and the less work" theory is one of the worst of these.

For the Ladies. The Velvet Hat. Never was the velvet hat so fashion- able as it is at present, and this is not surprising taking into consideration the fact that whore comfort and appearance are concerned there is nothing which can possibly surpass it. The newest shapes are delightitd, all being extremely simple and needing very little trimming. All sizes of hats are being produced in vel- vet, from the wide picture shapes to the close-fitting turban. A new Paris model is one made with the brim much wider at the sides than in front and behind. The brim shows a most graceful and be- coming curve, for it is turned up sharply in front over the eyes, but tapers off towards the sides where the brim is allowed to droop. Another model is the velvet hat with a turn-up brim all round but fluted in front. This hat is particularly modish at the present moment. An all-over design of clionilic is one way of trimming the velvet hat. while quaint conventional flowers, made of white kil, is another. Wishy feathers, and of course ostrich feathers, both curled and uncurled, are very fashionable, and osprey is used a graat deal. With an exceedingly smart shape, no trimming at all is needed, especially if you are the lucky possessor of one of the beautiful new veils which have borders of lace embroidery, which are so very fashionable. The border is worn over the front of the hat, forming a very beautiful trimming in itself, the mesh of the veil covering the face. BEAD CHAINS. Bead chains and necklaces are more generally worn than ever. It is now quite usual to possess many different strings of beatds to wear with different dresses, the colour of which is generally in direct- contrast to the beads It is a pretty idaa to wear beads which ruatch in shade the embroidery on the frock. As well as beads, quaint baubles, a pen- dant or plaques, suspended by a cord or ribbon are also fashionable. Some of these are very original. Jade and amber are worn in this way, while some very novel ornaments made of "arved coloured horn are ponuiar.

TAPESTRIES. Singleton Treasures Offered for Art GaUery. At a meeting of the Swansea Art and Crafts Committee on Monday, the Curator reported an offer by Mr. F. L. Andrews to sell to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery some tapestries, which he had purchased at Singleton. for the same price as the pur- chase. The Chairman told the commif,tee that Mr. Murray was satisfied that there wae no room for the tapestries in the Glynn Vivian Gallery, and the only thing that ooultl be done with them would be to allow them to remain on the walls in Singleton. If they were there, the com- mittee would hare nothing further to d-o with them. Mr. Richard Martin: Can we reoommcxid the Corporation to buy them? The Chairman: Just now, Mr. Martin, we do not desire to recommend them to spend money. AIterwardft. the Chairman suggested that Mr. Murray should take the matter to Mr. Tunbridge to bring before the Estates Com- mittee. He added that it would not appeal to lots of Swansea people to hear that the committee had spent £ 930 on tapestries to hang in Singleton. He wished to e-ay, how- ever, that. Mr. Andrews, who was a son of Mr. Solomon Andrews, had bought the tapestries to prevent them going to dealers, and he desired to help the town by allow- ing them to acquire tu-e ta-pestries at the same price as he Brave. The matter then dropped.

RURAL WATER BILL. ——— ——— Councillor, Jennings Explains the Opposition. At the meeting of the Llanelly Borough Council on Monday, trhe Deputy Mayor (Aid. H. D. Recs) presiding, bills were submitted for legal work in connection with Parliamentary Bills. Councillor W. Davies asked whetlier a statement had boon prepared showing the total amount incurred. The Town Clerk replied in the affirma- 1 tive, and said the figures were as fol- lows :— Promotion of Borough Water Bill, £ 3,166. Opposition to Rural Water Bill, £774. Ald. Nathan Griffiths; And if it had not been for the Rural Water Bill going through Parliament we should have been on our beam ends for water owing to the droughtj Wo have been cutting off our noses to 6pite our faces. Where would we have been to-day without rural water ? Councillor D. Jennings: I believe every- body appreciates that. By opposing we were hoping to come to terms and we did. Aid. Griffiths: Our opposition was for the purpose of retaining the extended areas Councillor Jennings; -No, no. The terms obtained were practically arranged with the old Rural Council before we went to Parliament, and it is well that the public should know it. When the new Rural Council came into office they threw over the arrangement with the old Rural Council.

CARTLOADS OF STONES Taken Fronj Roof of Art Gallery. On Monday, at a meeting: of the Swanew* Art and lirafts Committee, Mr. Murray pro- duced some big stones which, he said, were part of about three cartloads taken from the roof of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. On several occasions, he said, stones he A broken the glass on the gallery roof. He suggested that the owners of the private property at the back of the g/illery be made to enclose it. It wae decided to take stepe to approach the owners of the property.

The Beach, presumably, thought it Tin. reasonable, for they adjourned the sum- monses for two months, hut they secured from the parents a promise that should the opening of the new school be delayed, tW children will be sent to the existing school.
