THE O HAS RIVE AN.
THE O HAS RIVE AN. TRUSTEES RE-ELECT SIR GRIFFITH ï NüMAS. INTERESTING REPORT. The annual meeting of the Swam-oa Harhour Trust was held on Monday morning, Mr. Glynn Price presiding pro. tem. Mr. Morgan Tutton, in moving the te- election of Sir Griffith Thomas as chair- man, remarked that Sir G ritii th had been a member of the Trust for twenty- two years, and chairman for fifteen years. He trusted that he would take up the duties again, and that he would continue for inajiy more years to occupy the position which had been so pleasurable to him and so profit- able to the Trust. Sir Griffith Ihomas hao grown as it were with the work of the port, and was intimate with all its requirements. During the period, of his chairmanship there had been an increase 111 the tratio of the port from 2^ to 3 million tons, and in tonnage it in-as about 1,600,000 tons. Mr Tucton reieivetl toj.Vhe great ex- tensions that Sir Griffith Thomas had witnessed at the docks, and the very considerable improvement of the har- bour. The credit of the Trust stood higher to-day than it had ever done in the (applause). No Sinecure. Lord Glantawe seconded the resolu- tion, and alluded to ton- Griffith Thomas' devotion to the duties ü1 the 'lrust. The othce was no sinecure by any means; the duties were enormous, teir Griffith Thomas was comparatively a young man, but he had been so busy in the work of the Trust that he had not bcien able to look out for a part- ner. (.Laugnter). lie [nought wnon that took place they would not have so much -of ins presence at tneir meetings. Air. Glynn Price supported the re- solution, which was carried unani- mously. only Six Chairmen. air <~rnlii ill 1 nomas, navmg again taken the chair thanked the proposer and s>ecoiuier of 11.6 election as chair- man tor' ntteen successive years. It was a canons thing that when Mr. St. Grenldi was appointed first cnaiiman 01 the Trust it was in the year 164, when he (Sir Griffith) was oorn. There had only been six chair- men ot the riarbour Irust Wllu all seemed to run for over seven years with tne exception or Mr. George Str.ck. Mr. btariiug bCllMlll appeared to have held the office for the longest period. lielerring to the trade of the past year he was glad to say that the total trade of their harhour exceeded that of lyii by nearly 200.000 tons, notwitn- -ileii- tiiey iiad standing, as they ait knew, they had periods of strikes which 111 the aggre- gate amounted to nearly two months. The loss in exports and import^dui mg March and Apnl, 1911, amounted to 545,146 tons, and but for that the total trade lor nn^ might nave readied cjosc oil 1,000,000 tons. During the week ending 8th Novem- ber, n;12 the total trade was a record, namely, 176,116 tons, whIch.. it kept up ior over a year, would give a trade of between LrOuO.OOO and 10.000.000. Capacity of Docks. He mentioned this to show that their docks could deal with a very largely increasett trade. Shipments of coal and fuel increased by neary :OUU tons, oi which aoout o.OUO tons was in fuel. The demand for fuel over the world had increased, and he was hoping before long [heir export oi this article might reach 100,000 annually. The tinplate and kindred trades were biisk in 1912, and shipments increased by 11.000 tons, notwithstand that the war in the Balkans prevented shipments to Rouniania and other coun- tries by the war and consequently they held very large stocks, whicn had added to the congestion which had been com- plained of. lie hoped that peace in that country might be close at hand, and in that case it was expected that quite 70,000 tons might be shipped there duiing the pre- sent year. Warehouse Accommodation. Sir Griffith then dealt with the ware- house acccoinmodation. Prior to the opening 01 the King's Dock, the trustees constructed two very capacious w arehonsfv;, one being 400 feet by 120 feet, and the other 400 feet hy 60 feet, and suosequently they provided an- other warehoti-e 250 feet by 70 feet, which they thought would be sufficient for some little time. The demands made upon them, however, in this con- nection exceeded their anticipations, the t-iflpJfitQ, galvanised sheet. and genera! cargo trades having grown enormousl y, so that the matter re- quired to bo further considered and just recently the Trustees entered into a contract for an extension of B. shed by 70 per cent., the increased com- prising nearly 17,000 square feet. Another contract they entered into was for extending the brick warehouse at the west end of the Prince of Wales Dock. The export oi galvanised sheets and tinplats to various parts of South America had shown very satisfactory developments, and that part of the world was now well served by steamship lines direct from the port. "L" sh-ed was devoted exclusively U> the Roumanian trade and he anti- cipated there woiuid be exported to that country this year very little short oi 70,000 tons. If additions were necessary to their warehouse room they would be made. The Import Trade. There was a falling off in the import, trade of 37,000 tons. To a great ex- tazic this was caused by the shutting down of works during the coal strike, and again there was a loss in importation of cala- mine by a further strike of two months in that trade. Sir Griffith then referred to the ?reat increase th;? had taken place in the s'.ze of steamers and the registered tGl1nage In 19H they had 5,658 vessels of a re?is- t?red tonnage of 2,945,900, and in I g I tl?y had 5,503 vessels of a registered tonnage of 2,988,702. In 1907 they took 5,547 vesssels with registered tonnage of only 2,714,917. He expressed his regret that the English steamers entering the port were felling behind foreign steamers in num- ber and tonnage, and he hoped in the future the supremacy of the steamers carrying the British nag would be re- estabiisned. Devclopmonts. Sir Griffith proceeded to show how the! trade of the port had developed in recent years compared, with its development years ago. During the twenty years from 1862 to 1881 they progressed from 1,0GU>00J to 2,000,000 tons a year. It then took them 13 years to get from j 2,000,000 to 3,000,000, a?? it took them. J from 1895 w 1901 to get to the 4,1)00,000 figure, and another lour years to get to tho 5,000,000. Tho last tw o years they had exceeded 6,000.000, and he hoped next- year they woukl reach the 7,000,000 figure. Tli-e financial lesult of the whole undertaking was very much better than the previous year, w ithstanding an estimated loss of £ 10,-000 net revenue by the strike. bir Griffith, in referred to the ddticulty of working tflt2 traffic over crowded thoroughfares, bridge. and congested areas, but despite these i-tl fficiiltles 300,000. tons more had be-en carried than in the previous year. He spoke of the arrangements that were being made to relieve the congestion at the docks, the new sidings that would be open, the Rhondda new tip, and the opening of the new line irom Llangen- Iie-ch to Swansea, and other matters I which pointed to the increasing pros- perity of the port. (A pplause.) Vote of Sympathy. I A vote of sympathy with the widow and lamiiy of Mr. Goorge Jones, assist- i ant collector, was passed. I Financial Report. » Mr. GJyim Trice m moving mo) adoption of the report of the Finance i Committee said the trade of the port for the last month was slightly below that for the corresponding month of last year. The imports, however, showed a distinct improvement, the in- crease being over 30 per cent. Tar and pitch improved 1,300 tons, copper ore 4,300, iron ore 1,300, pig iron 1,400. wood goods 7,800, pyrites 3,200; grain 3,300. In the exports there was a de- crease in the shipment of coal and coke. 35,000 tons, while in patent fuel there was an increase of 4,500 tons, and tinplates and galvanised sheets of 6,700 tons. They would notice that the trade lr the two months tons, being at the rate of upwards oi 7.000,000 tons per annum. 'J he result of the month' s' working was a loss (« l:lqJ a £ compared with one of £ 2,14i of the nioiit?is of iast year. a loss o-i Ei.?,12, as (,onipai oiie of re- (itifilig of last y(,ai- Lo,ct secoi,?,e(f, "11(i tile '?r.i-c-et&cted amI theaccountb?.n.ssed. A WAHKiNC TO WALES. I
A WAHKiNC TO WALES. I At the annual Welsh national con- cert in connection with the Castle-street (London) Welsh Mutual Improvement Society, held on Saturday night, Mr. John Hinds, M.P. (\Vest Carmarthen) observed that tile small nations of the world were, he thought, responsible more than empires and cosmopolitan I civilisations for what it great historian had described as the miracles of l human hi??toi-y." The day of small nacrous was not past. In politics, art, commerce and literature they seemed to be coming into their 0?11 in an unparal- leled way. He gave a varnbig? how ever, of the dangers of seh-sa?istaction. The Welsh had made a success of every-I thing*t.hey had attempted—in education, politics, and commerce. They had great gifts But they might ask themselves ? hat real contribution had they made to European music; or was the world more spiritual for the Welsh being religious? These were questions to which thought should be given.
