Sunday. Concerts. "1 suppose you're right (a friend writee) in thinking that the Parks Committee's decision on Sunday concerts and Sunday boating will cause a good deal oi contro- versy. for there are few things raising more interesting and dinicult problems. But the surprising thing is that no one present at the Parks Committee meeting seems totha,ve apoken in favour of grant- ing either. This seems to suggest a de- &nite idea in the members' minds of what the attitude of the general public was likely to be. Whether they were right in regard to public opinion cannot, of course, be said. Apart from the fact that much smaller watering places, cater- ing for perhaps a tenth of our population, recognise both these things it was sought to introduce hero. it does act seem to me that there is much to be said against either from, the point of view of their m- teri'erenoe with ordinary Sunday obser- vance. for the boats would only be used by those who have already decided that the seaside is the best place to spend Sunday and the concerts would be after service hours, and of a standard classic char- acter. So that. omitting from one's con- siderations the very important point of whether it is fair to encourage more people to work when they ought to be resting, the question resolves itseLf into one of relative goodness' of the pastimes in question or mere unoccupied leisure. One member of the Parks Committee had the interesting point of view that they should not encourage young people to be crowded in marquees on Sunday evenings—it was better they should be taking quiet walks. Agreed, but what if the" quiet walk< are the crowded, ratjior noi5y cries of Oxford. street? This thing wants thinking out, and the church ea cannot aSord to ignore it," I Good OM u.nnMr.t'me.
