I A Welsh Breach of Promise Case. I 0- At the Anglesey Summer Assizas yesterday— before 3Mr Justice Fiel,l F, middle-aged spinster, named Ann Jones, residing at Bodorgan, Anglesey, sued John Roberts, joiner and builder, AbeiGraw, in the same county, for the recoveiy of damages, laid at £ 200, for breach of a promise to many. Mr Malcolm Douglass .(instructed by Messrs D. Lloyd George and George) appeared for the plaintiff and Mr J. Bryn Roberts, M.P. (instructed by Mr S. H. Dew), for the defendant. From the statement of claim it apr eared that the di-fendant had promised to marry the plaintilf in November, 1835, and renewed the promise to marry her 111 February, 13S9, which was not carried out. The statement ot defence set forth that the defendant had never promised to marry tbe plaintiff, but even if he had agreed, the agreement was conditional | c upon the plaintiff furnishing him with proof in support of representations mado by her to the defendant to induce him to marry her, th?t iiioi was possessed of £ 300 and a life annuity of Clo, which conditIOn the plaintiff had failed to per- form. A number of letters wero produced. In thiJ fjrRt letter which the defendant wrote to the plaintiff, he said fie should like to eee her personally, adding that in the uieantimo she could write to hIm III the EIW]lsh lallgUag-8 If lw preferred doing so." To this epistle fhu plaintiff replied:—" Mr Roberts, in answer to your note, which I received yesterday, as I have uot had an opportunity of knowing yon personally, the best thing I can do is to state to you that nJY object in thus writing is to the glory nnd honour of god." In this letter the plaintiff hoped that in taking this step there would be no hindrance to her Christian pro- gress." Ttie plaintiff, in evidence, said that she lived at Tyddynengan, Bodorgan. As a result of receiving a letter frum him, she met the defend- ant on April 10th, after winch a correspondence waij commenced between them. On the first occasion they had a "chat" about "religious subjects." (Laughter.) The plaintiff, continuing, said that a few more letters passed between Christmas and March, when the correspondence ceased for three weeks. The jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, awarding £ 30 damages.

THE DEPTFORD POISONING CASE. The Late Mrs Winter's Confes- sion. I Fully Acknowledged Her Guilt. Mrs Winter, against whom the coroner's jury returned a verdict of wilful murder in the Dept- ford poisoning caso, made before her death a con- fession of her guilt in the, presence of her husband and daughter. She said she did not know what induced her to disgraco her family by committing tho cr:mes, as she had plenty of money, She entirely exculpated her daughter, Mrs Frost, from complicity in the crime. Dr Macnaugiiten, who attended some of the victims, contends that an inquest was necessary in Winter's case, since it might have revealed tile tJXlstenco uf poison elsewhere. Suicide of a Witness. THE END OF USK PRISON. Transfer of incarcerated Debtors to Cardiff. The. Prison Commissioners keep pegging away at the cli.-ing of U*k 1 nsou, about which they long ago determined, but deferred the carrying out of their intentions, because of the strong protest from tiie county magistrates. His Honour Judge Owen, sitting at Newport county-Coiirt this morning, incidentally remarked, in dealing with a number j of judgmeut Sillillill, "I that he had received communication from tho Home Secre- tary to the effect that persons fjommit.t.ed under the orders of the caurf, both from the U-k and Newport districts, must be s^nt tor the future to Cardiff Gaol and no!, to U-k Prison.
