ION Tuesday last the Town Council of Carmar- then were engaged for some time in discussing the matter of keeping pigs in the town. More than three centuries ago similar matters occupied the attention of their predecessors, as the follow- ing minute, taken from the Book of Orders of the Common Council of Carmarthen, under date of 5 October, 1575, shows:—"Ordered that none maner of swine, great or smale, shall be dreiven or suffered to goe into the comons belonginge to the said towne oneles every of the said swine be lawfullie ringed and yoked, nor shalbe suffered to go nor lye in anny open streate or streats within the said towne upon paine that the honor or owners of every such ewiie for every such offence shall paye in the name of a fine the aomme of iiiid." THE South Wales Daily New8 gravely assures us that Mr. W. J. Buckley intends to marry a Miss Francis, St. Clears," about the middle of April. It seems a little strange, but who would dream of questioning the veracity of our Cardiff contemporary ? We may say, however, that if this report be true there is good reason to believe that Mr Buckley contemplates bigamy. On second thoughts it occurs to us that this "Miss Francis, of St Clears," may be as visionary a person as Sairey Gamp's dear friend, Mrs Harris. Can it be possible that the Cardiff paper invented Miss Francis, with a suggestion of bigamy, in order to rouse the Nonconformist Conscience before the General Election ? If that be so we shall have reprisals, and probably the Tory organ will, a few days hence, hint that Mr Lloyd Morgan has been implicated in a London burglary oase. Clever fellows, these party leaders. INCREDIBLE-well, very nearly incredible—stories are told of the wonders that were wrought by music when the world was young. For example, Orpheus, by the mere touch of his lyre, is said to have drawn trees after him and made the flowing rivers stop in their course to listen. Nay, he harped so sweetly on the few miserable bits of cat-gut which then did duty for a musical instrument that his "sainted Maria" (better known under her primitive alias of Eurydice) was actually allowed to return to earth-all but. So profoundly was the soul of the infernal monarch Pluto stirred by those divine strains If Orpheus came to Llanelly with a couple of strings stretched upon an old seashell, and tried his little tweedle-dee melodies on the butchers there, what would be the result ? Would the magic work upon those stern fellows, or-for the world has greatly changed since the walls of Thebes went up of their own accord-would these men of slaughter turn their destructive weapons on the poor harpist ? If they took this latter couse, it would be nothing very novel after all, seeing that female Bacchanals clawed Orpheus to death, and there are people of the Bacchanal persuasion among us still. It would hardly be respectful to suggest that the Llanelly butchers are more hard-hearted and inharmonious of soul than the ruler of Hades, but it is plain that they — do not lose their heads at the sound of modern music. The Borough Council wants to give up the entire market-place to the National Eisteddfod for a week, but as stallholders the butchers do not see the matter in the same light as the Council. They declare they will stick to" the east end of the market at any rate. <* Oh," say the Council, that is wanted for the fine art exhibition." Still, the butchers will not be softened. So now it is a case of music, plus fine art, versus prime beef, mutton, and tripe, and it will be interesting to watch and see whether the material will vanquish the spiritual, or vice versa. When, in reply to a question, the minstrel told him, We always sing of love, because it is the most universal of human feelings," Kenelm Chillingly answered, No, hunger is the most universal. If that is the principle which guides you, why not tune your lyre to the praise of a beef steak ? Now, at Llanelly the beef steak is asserting itself and claiming the place to which it is, doubtless, entitled in a materialistic and utilitarian stage of human progress. Will it come out of the contest victorious ? THE shop assistants at Carmarthen often sigh as they think of their confreres at Swansea and .Cardiff, who have not only better opportunities for recreation, but also shorter hours to work. We can hardly hope that the recreation which the Carmarthen assistants lack will be provided for them in our time, and the only question practically worth considering is whether they ought to be set free from work at seven in the evening all the year round. Most of the shops « here, including several of the drapery establish- ments, open at half-past seven in the morning; and a young man or young woman who has been busy for eleven hours and a half, and standing sal that time, is surely entitled to be released from toil for the rest of the twenty-four hours, if the thing can possibly be arranged consistently with the just interests of their employers. But there are difficulties in the way. In the first place, the early closing movement mainly concerns one trade, and one only. With the exception of our few boot and shoe dealers and a couple of miscellaneous traders, hardly anyone but the drapers closes at seven in winter. If grocers, provision dealers, watchmakers, and business people in general keep open till eight in winter, it seems well nigh hopeless to expect that they will be prevailed upon to shut shop at seven throughout the summer. So it is mainly a question of what the drapers can be induced to do; and this is a question of con- siderable importance, as the drapers employ a great many more assistants than other trades do. We have taken the opinion of one or two of the leading drapers on the matter under considera- tion, and what they say may be summarised thus In the fine summer weather many of our country customers do not come into the town to do their shopping until evening; and, besides, if we close at seven we shall lose our share of the servant girls' trade, as they can rarely get out until after that hour. Still, we and our families —for some of us have members of our families in the shop all day-are anxious to get off at seven, and we would willingly waive the objec- tions just stated if you could only get the small shopkeepers to join us in closing at seven." This last point seems to be at the root of the difficulty. Men who have to keep up large establishments and pay heavy rates find it very hard to close at seven and drive some of their customers to little shops that keep open until eight, nine, or later. Of course, the shop assistants themselves are aware of this obstacle which stands in the way of their desires, and, no doubt, they will make a special effort to over- come it. If they succeed in bringing the small drapers to reason they may have a chance with even the grocers. If all parties joined loyally in the movement none would suffer; but it will be necessary to create a very strong public opinion in favour of the movement before it can become general. RATEPAYEBS of Carmarthen should be thankful for small mercies. The Town Council decided, on Tuesday, with the help of the casting vote of the Mayor, to reduce the district rate by one penny, that is, from 2s 8d to 2s 7d in the pound. This was done in order to carry out a glorious tradition of the past, that you should not have a balance to your credit at the bank, because, if you have, you may be tempted to spend it. A Corporation dealing with public money is very much like a little boy with a few coppers in his pocket. Ite is tempted to spend it. Perhaps, some have heard the maternal warning, that the coppers would burn a hole in one's pocket unless they were invested on marbles or sweets. Men are but children of older growth, and do very much the same. At least, such was the reasoning of Alderman C W Jones, who said—and we admit with some plausibility -that when a Corporation has money to their credit at the bank it is an inducement to them to spend it. But is it sound finance to assume that you should not have a balance in hand, and then you will not be likely to incur further expenditure ? We think not. Surely, what is good for a tradesman must be good for a community. Would any tradesman think of carrying on his business year after year with an adverse balance at his bankers, paying interest on the overdraft ? Perhaps, some would say that the end would be bankruptcy, and yet that is practically what the Carmarthen Corporation has been doing, and what they seem inclined to per- petuate. The Town Clerk, on an estimate which had been carefully prepared, showed that there was a balance due to the bankers of TT "JI' ±44u on the aistnct rate account. ne stated that the amounts for which he had taken credit — £ 320 for work done for private property owners, 1308 for main roads, L30 for Johnstown footpath, and Y,72, the half of salaries of officers, from the County Council—would not be received for many months to come. These sums give a total of 2722, and in addition there is on the borough rate account the moiety of police pay and clothing, ;C498, to say nothing of market rents, so that there is a total of £ 1,200 odd which is only a prospective credit. Mean- while, the business of the town must be carried on, and one is not surprised to learn that last year no less than L60 interest was paid to the bank on the overdrawn accounts. The Town Clerk, with the view of obviating this in the future, suggested the building up of a credit balance, and he proposed to allow L200 in the estimate for contingencies. It was to this item that Alderman Jones took exception, and he moved to reduce it by JE100. He was successful, and then the reduction of the rate by one penny followed. This, as the Town Clerk showed, is a matter of doubtful economy, because it is not so easy to collect a rate which cannot be divided into four equal quarters without fractions, and as nothing less than a halfpenny could be put on the demand note the collection of the rate may involve a loss of £15. Add this to the amount that will be paid to the bank by way of interest, and it will go far towards the penny which half the Council think they had saved in cutting down the estimate. So much for the glorious financial traditions of our Town Council, who, apparently, seem to think that the surest way to avoid spending money is not to have anything to spend, and that to achieve so desirable an object it is immaterial whether you spend 280 for which the ratepayers get no return.

CARDIGAN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL.—At a meeting of the looal managers of this school, held on Monday, the plans of Messrs George Morgan and Son, architects, Carmarthen, for the school buildings, were selected out of ten sent in. The betting was 13 to 8 on "Quite Right," bat Mr T Jenkins's dog put some good work behind a good hare and won decisively. In the second round, "Hawbcombo Head" again came off victorious, and the betting was 2 to 1 on Hawkcombe Head." In a long run up, the favourite reached the hare three lengths in front, and scored point after point, won eaaily, and killed puts. Jamt-s Carter, who has been appointed station- master of the Great Western Railway at Carmarthen in succession to the late Mr 8 Cruse, entered upon his duties hwre on Tuesday, 5th inst., and is a comparatively young man, with apparently plenty of energy and good business habits. It appears that Mr Carter has been already over twenty years in the service, having began as a lad in tbe goods office of the G. W.R. at his native city of Gloocesier. He was very soon removed to the district goods manager's office, and after a few years there was promoted to a post in the general manager's office at Paddington. After cervicg two years there he came down to Swansea as divisional staff clerk, which appointment he filled with credit and marked efficiency up to the date of his taking charge of the Carmarthen station. We wish Mr Carter every suocess, and have no doubt that he will be a worthy successor to the late stationmaster. PRIORDY CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL.—The fifth of a series of winter entertainments was held on Monday night, when a capital programme was gone through. The chair was oooupibd by Mr Morris Jones, the Avenue, and the accompanist was Mr W Dunn Williams, G.T.S.C., Elliston-terrace. PROPOSAL FOR EARLY CLOSING AT CARMARTHEN.—On Tuesday evening a mass meeting of the shop assixtants of Carmarthen met at Dawes's Temperance Hotel, King-street, Carmarthen, to consider the bent means of promoting a movement for closing ea/lier during the summer months. Mr P Pagh Morgan (Cloth Hall) occupied the chair, and there was a large number of assistants present. A discussion took place, in which it was unanimously felt that the closing at an early hour was desirable. Eventually, it was decided that the tradesmen of the town be canvassed in order to test their feeliog at to the closing of their establishments at 7 o'olock during the summer months. Mr D P Morgan was then eleated chairman; Mr Richards (Golden Anchor), secretary; while the following ladies and gentlemen were appointed to act on the committee:— Mis" Jones (Cloth Hall), Miss Davies (Emporium), Mr Lucius Thomas (LJ LI Rees), Mr J H Rees (Cloth Hall), Mr Harris (Emporium), and Mr Lewis (London House). The meeting was, undoubtedly, one of the most en- thusiastic ever held by the shop assistants at Car- marthen. CARMARTHEN UNITED CHOIR.—SACRED CONCERT.— The first of a series of sacred concerts in connection with the Carmarthen United Choir was held at the Town Hall on Sunday evening last. There was a large audience present. Tbe Mayor (Mr H Brunei White) occupied the chair. The choir gave an artistic rendering of" Lead, Kindly Light," which was followed by a solo, Sound an Alarm," by Mr James Morgan. Mrs Vaughan sang "At Minster Gate," and Mr G J Hodges gave a ood reoitatioa, entitled "Tho Trouble in Amen Corner." The choir afterwards sung one of the test pieces, How Dread the Scene," in a manner which was most complimentary to themselves and tbeir oonduotor. The chorus was repeated later on in the evening. The remaining items on the programme were contributed by Mr James Morgan and Mrs Vaughan, in a duett, The Lord lendeth His Mercy," and also a solo, Why do the Nations," by Mr E Colby Evans. The Rev A Fuller Mills, during the course of an address, expressed entire approval with the holding of concerts similar to that which they bad listened to that evening, especially as they had been conducted in so decorous a manner. He" impressed upon the choir the great importance of attending the practices, and told them not to look upon their work as a sacrifice. By being members they had the advantage of obtaining a musical training, which was a great thing in itself. They should also consider that by performing those sacred works they were performing a duty to their Saviour. The Mayor also made a few appropriate remarks, after which the audience dispersed. THE THOROUGHBRED AND HUNTER SHOW AT ISLINGTON* —CARMARTHENSHIRE AGAIN VICTORIOUS.—The eleventh annual show of thoroogbbreds and hunters opened on Tuesday at the Agricultural Hall, Islington. The entries numbered 340 as against 275 last year. The Royal Commission on Horse Breeding gives premiums to tbe extent of £4,350 in 29 Queen's premiums of £160 each, while the Hunters' Improvement Society offer £100 to hunter colts and geldings, £250 to hunter mares and fillies, £260 to hunter mares and geldings, to be shown under saddle. Among the exhibitors at the last show were tbe Prince of Wales, Lord Rosebery, the Earl of Cottenham, Earl Cowley, Earl Spencer, etc. In Class F. WEDDING IN PRIORY STRBBT. On Wednesday morning, at Penuel Baptist Chapel (the Rev G H Rober's, pastor, oClciatiDg), Mtea M A Samuel, 40, Priory-street (sitter of Mr Gwilym Smuel, school- master, Johnstown), was married to Mr D J Davies, Cwmpark, Treorky. The bride was prettily attired in a pale grey costume with a brown hat, while the bridesmaids, Miss Letitia Jones, Castle Piggyn, and Miss Bess Jones, the Avenue, wore slate-coloured dresses, with hats to match. The latter were accom- panied by Messrs T E Samuel and R D Tank. The genial and amiable disposition of the bride has won for her many friends and acquaintances, and these gave expressiob to their good wishes by copious showers of rice. A breakfast was provided for the party and a few friends by the bride's mother. The presents were very numerous. The married couple left the town by an afternoon train. CARMARTHBN CRICKET CLUB.—A very success- ful meeting of the above club was held at the Boar's Head Hotel, on Thursday evening, the 28th ult, when there were present:—Mr Holmes, Training College, who was voted to the chair Mr H-o Norton, Mr J H Davies (Red Lion Hotel), Mr Cuthbert, Mr Fred Morgan, Mr C Haydn Williams, Mr 8 B James (N. P. Bank), Mr Thomas (Parke), Mr W V H Thomas (Starling Park), Mr D C Daniels, and Mr Jas. Morgan. On the motion of Mr Norton, seconded by Mr J H Davies, it was resolved that the balance theet, showing a balance in band, be adopted. It was mentioned that Mr Barker would not be able to retain his office as treasurer for the future, and on the motion 01 mr Norton, seconded by Mr James, a vote ot thanks was accorded to Mr Barker for his past services as treasurer. It was unanimously agreed that the club be re-started, and that Mr J H Davies be appointed secretary, and Mr S B James, treasure). It was propoaed by Mr Morgan, and seconded by Mr 0 H Williams, that the Mayor be elected president, and Mr T Jenkins, Mr T W Barker, and Mr G T Norton, be elected vice-presidents for the ensuing year. This was carried, and it was further resolved that all members present be elected on the committee, with power to add to their number. Mr Vincent Howell Thomas was appointed captain, and Mr Owen Norton, vice-captain. A deputation, consisting of the captain, vice-captain and secretary, was appointed to wait upon Mr Jenkins, to secure his field on the best terms. A cordial vote of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to a close. The next meeting will be held at the same time and place on Friday, March 15th, when all interested are invited to attend. CARMARTHEN CoUNTY PBTTY SESSIONS.—The usual petty sessions were held at the Shire-ball on Saturday last, before Rev R G Lawrence, Middleton Hall; Mr Dodley Williams Drummond, Poruscliff; Mr C W Jones, Carmarthen; and Mr J Lloyd Thomas, Gilfach. -Defective Scales and Meaturet: John Thomas, Railway Inn, Newchurch, was charged by P.C. TV Rees, mspeotor of weights and measores, with having an unstamped measure in his possession. The In- spector's evidence showed that on the 25th ult be visited defendant's honse and found in the oellar a qoart and two pint measures. They were amongst other measures which were being unused, and were un- stamped. To the best of witness's belief the measures in question were for the us-e of trade. A fine of Is with 91 costs was imposed. -William Evans, general dealer, Cwmdaady Conwil, was charged with having unjust scales in his possession. The evidence of Inspector Rees showed that the scales were 4 drachms against the purchaser. When loaded, by giving a slight twitch to the: g^ods end it would make it unjust two ounces against the purchaser. Defeodaot was fined 5s, with 8s oosts, the scales being forfeited. LLANDDAROG. I PLOUGHING MATCH. -Tbe ploughing match for the above parish took place on Friday, 8'h inst, on a field kindly lent for the occasion by Mr John Harris, of Lodge Farm. The weather was wet ard stormy, and this deterred many plough men from taking part in the contest. Though the number of competitors were few, the quality of Ihe ploughing was exceptionally good- not a bad workman amongst the whole. NARBERTH. THB SUPPOSED CASE OF INFANTICIDB. —CATHEBINB JONES COMMITTED.—On Sunday, the 24th of February last, a butcher, named Alfred Mabe. was crossing a field near Wood Office, Narberth, when he saw the body of a child in a gap in the hedge. Naked and frozen, the body appeared to have been gnawed by some animal, and presented a gruesome spectacle. Police-sergeant Phillips, of Narberth, being sent for, took the body to Narberth. Near the spot where the body was found there were indications of gipsies having been encamped, and suspicion fell on two women of the gipsy class wflo had been seen in the neighbourhood. In the meantime an inquest was held, when evidence was given by Dr Price, Narberth, who expressed the opinion that the child had had a separate existence, and had died, probably, through the neglect of those respon- sible in not properly tying the umbilical cord. The jury returned a verdict to this effect, adding, But under what circumstances, or who are the parties con- nected with the death of the said child, there is no evidence to show." The police, however, arrested two gipsy women near Solva. Their names were Elizabeth Jones and Catherine Jones, her step-daughter, who were brought before the magistrates at Narberth charged with causing the death of the ohild. The elder prisoner was liberated on bail, but the younger one, who admitted having given birth to the child, was removed to Carmarthen Prison. -On Thursday, the 7th inet, the prisoners were again brought before the magistrates at Narberth, the follow- ing justices being on the bench:—Mr R H Buck by, Mr Robert Ward, Mr Seymour Allen, Mr G P Brewer, and Mr R G Lewis.—Mr W Morgan Griffiths, solicitor, Carmarthen, appeared to proiiecate on behalf of the Treasury, and detailed the facts of the case The two prisoners had been travelling the country in a van belonging to the elder prisoner's husband. About the 4tb of February they were encamped on Sodgeston Mountain, and they then prooeeded in the direction of Narbertb, finally encamping in a q"arry, in the parish of Narberth South. On the way the younger prisoner, Catherine Jones, was taken seriously ill, and she had occasion to go into the van Nothing was seen of her that day till the evening, when she came out of the van, and sat groaning by the camp fire on the roadside. On the following day she went with her stepmother to see Dr Price at Narberth. She was very weak and feeble, but Dr Price did not examine her then. After encamping in the quarry near Narberth for nearly a week, the prisoners and the encampment left the neigh- bourhood, and nothing was heard of them until Feb- ruary 24, when Alfred Mabe found the body. The elder prisoner denied all knowledge of the transaction, and said she knew nothing whatever of the birth of the child. At the police-station at Narberth, the younger prisoner, Catherine Jonee, made a statement to the police-sergeant that, on or about the 4th of February, she gave birth to the child, and after the first magis- terial inquiry, on February 28, she voluntarily made the statement" I was took bad on the road from Sodgeston Mountain, and had the baby on the road, and I pat it inside myself. My father aod mother were calling in the village at the time." Dr Price had bad the child's stomach sent to the analyst at Swansea, but the result of the examination wou:d have no bearing whatever on the inquiry.— Evilence was then given in support of the above state- ment by Alfred Mabe, Police-sergeant Phillips, Police- contitable Wbeeler, Cathrrine Lloyd, and Superin- tendent Elans, Pembroke. Dock. -Dr Price, Narberth, said he found the ohiid in a frozen state, while its left side bad been eaten—gnawed by some animal. He found, however, no bruises. The lungs were rosy and vermilion, clearly indicating that it had lived and had had a separate existence. It was a fully-developrd male child The luns floated in water when tested. He was of opinion that the ohild had lived for an hour or two. The contents of the stomach were frozen. The umbilical cord was not tied and the ends were torn, so that the bleeding therefrom might have caused death, e-pecially in face of the severe weather, which alone was sufficient to cause death, for there were about 20deg. of frost. The body was clean, and seemed to have been washed. On the 6th of February both prifoners called upon him. The younger one was cold and shivering and in a delicate state. He gave her medicine, and told her to go to bed. He did not examine her. On the 28th of February he examined her at the police station, ?nd discovered evidence clearly: indicating she had recently been delivered of a ohild. I Mr C A Seyler, analyst, Swansea, who bad examined the child's stomach, said it contained no matter which could have caused its death.—The Bench committed tho prisoner Catherine Jones to take her trial at the next Pembrokeshire Assizes, on the charge of wilful murder. DAVIES, D.U.-Dr Davies, of Haverfordwest, for many yb&rs principal of the Baptist College, Haverfordwest, died rather suddenly at the reeidence of his daughter, Hill House College, at an early hour on Sunday morning. The rev. gentleman, who was in his 84th year, had been in failing health for a long time past, but nothing of a serious nature was apprehended until a few hours before the end came. Dr Davies was educated at Bristol College, and had for his fellow students the late Dr Davies, of Regent's Park College, and the late Dr Slampberd, etc. Before entering college be was on terms of friendship with the far-famed Christmas Evans,—Jones, Castle Town, and Dr Thomas, the once devoted president ot the Pontypool College. After leaving oollege Dr Davies ace-pied the pastorate of the High-street Baptist Chapel, Merthyr, and at his ordination services iheie were present the gifted Enoch Williams, M.A.. T" A_ T_ Y" JLTEATX OF ALDBRMAN JBNKINS, J.r.-We regret TO announce the death (at the age of 82) of Alderman Samoel Jenkins, of Pembroke-Dock, which took place at his residence, the Bush Hotel, in that town, on Sunday morning, after a abort illness. He was a native of Bristol, but for nearly sixty years had reaided at Pembroke-Dock. Within that period he has filled with credit many public offices, and has at all times been deeply and generally respected. He waa returned a member of the Pembroke Town Council in 1855, and in 1868 was elected alderman, which position he baa held ever since. He was elected mayor of the borough in 1870, and again filled the same effice in 1882 and 1883. A guardian ot the poor for the Pembroke Union for about 38 years oantinaously. he was re-elected fouith on the poll at the recen election. He was a trustee of Dr Jones's Charity, aDd bad been so for about twenty years pallt, He was also a member of the Port Sani- tary Comittee. Deceased was a Conservative and a Freemason. Now that the Carmarthen Steeplechases are aban- doned (writes a Town Correspondent) I wish to draw the attention of the licensed victuallers of tbip town to the fact that if they were to support the Athletic Sports in this town as well as they support the Steeplechases by contributing prizes, they would do great good to both the town and themselves. The A hletio Sports meeting, I believe, brings twenty strangers to every one that the Steeplechase gathering attracts to the town, and no one derives more benefit from those strangers than the licensed victuallers. It depends a great deal on them whether there will be aporta this year or not. I treat they will take this hint kindly, and come forward liberally with their donations, so that we may bave another athletic meeting this year, thus drawing a great influx of strangers from the neighbouring districts, and also keeping our own people at home.
