FLETCHER BAKER'S CONCERT.—On Friday last, Mr Baker, formerly organist of St. Peter's Church Carmarthen, who is very popular here, gave a grand concert, previous to his departure for America. It was intended to have been a farewell concert, but subsequent to its announcement, he found that it would be necessary for him to remain in this country until the spring, and we shall have the pleasure of hearing him again before he leaves. He also played two brilliant solos on Mr Thompson's newly-patented pianoforte, in a way which did him infinite credit. The touch, manipulation, and expression were faultless. Everybody was surprised at the volume of sound produced from the small piccolo piano to which Mr Thompson's patent was adapted, and Mr Baker, in calling the attention of the audience to it said it was equal in power to two pianos, and must be regarded as a wonderful achievement, which the great instrument-makers in London would envy, more particularly, as the honour would be taken by a Carmarthen man. The invention consists of a simple mechanical contrivance, by which the performer can at will increase the power two fold. Pedals are arranged to communicate with the hammers, each of which is made to strike two strings or four, as re- quired. It is a most ingenious invention, which the great makers have long wished for, and which Mr Thompson after much thought and labour has discovered. There is no doubt of its success. It has been inspected by several eminent musicians, including Mr Brinley Richards, who speak in the highest terms of It.The Welshman, Oct. 12, 1866. Mr Baker gave a selection of Irish airs on a cottage pianoforte possessing all the powers of a grand. This instrument has been patented by Mr S. Thompson, Guildhall-square, Carmarthen. The invention is certainly an important one, and has been highly spoken of by the best musical authorities of the day.Tk Carmarthen Journal, Oct. 12, 1866. Mr Thompson, of the firm of Thompson & Shackell, booksellers and stationers, of this town, has recently patented an improvement he has effected in cottage pianos. The invention has evoked the warmest expressions of approval from no less a master than Mr Brinley Richards; and on Friday last, at the concert given by Mr Baker, that gentleman spoke in terms of unqualified approbation of it, after testing one of Mr Thompson's patent pianos, which had been lent for the occasion, and upon which he played a number of Irish airs, accompanying himself also upon it in his splendid song of the Death of Nelson,' in which the superiority of the instrument was manifested in a marked degree. Mr Baker said that the improvement was truly wonderful, the cottage piano upon which he played being equal in power to a grand, or two ordinary cottage pianos, and said that the London builders would be glad to become possessed of the invention of a Carmarthen man, who deserved a fortune for the improvement which he had effected. Mr Baker's little speech was received with a spontaneous burst of cheers from the audience, who, having heard the effect of the instrument, thus endorsed his state- ment. The Carmarthen Weekly Reporter, Oct. 13, 1866. The number of years this invaluable Ointment has stood the test of public opinion (and the longer known the better appreciated) is a testimony of itself more convineing thau anything that could be written in praise of its truly wonder- ful healing properties. In the cure of bad legs, bad breasts, sores, wounds, and ulcers its effect is marvellous. For ring- worm, scald-bead, scrofula, and diseases of the skin gene- rally, there is no remedy to be compared tc it. grus- assiduously rubbed upon the skin (previously woll bathed with warm water) this Ointment is quickly absorbed into the sysrem, and cleanses, in its passage, every part to which it is applied. GLANDULAR SWELLINGS, BRONCHITIS, MUMPS QUINSEY, SORE THROATS, AND DIPTHERiA. In any of the above diseases, immediate and permanen relief is obtained by effectually rubbing this detergent Oint- ment, twiee a day. upon the neck, chest, and back. It acts upon the very mainsprings of life; for through the Claude pass all new matter required for the body's reparation and all old particles detrimental to its preservation. The Oinu ment, used conjointly with Holloway's Pills, will act so searehingly and certainly as to effect cures in the most hopeless oases. RHEUMATISM, LUMBAGO, CONTRACTED AND STIFF JOINTS. Many thousands of martyrs from the above complaint have found life almost insupportable; yet, if Holloway's Ointment be briskly and perseveringly rubbed upon the parts affected, ease may be safely guaranteed, especially if the pores of the skin be previously opened by fomentations with warm water. The gross humoure require expulsion from the system; it is therefore necessary to have recourse ic Hol- loway's admirable Pills, which, by purifying and strengthen- ing the system, greatly assist the operation of the Ointment and facilitate and confirm the cure. BAD LEGS, BAD BREASES, AND ULCERATIONS OF ALL KINDS There is no medicinal preparation in the world which may be so thoroughly relied upon, in the treatment of the above ailments, as Holloway's Ointment. Nothing can be so simple or safe as the manner in which it is applied, for its action on the body, both locally and constitutionally. The Ointment rubbed around the part affected, enters the pores just as salt enters meat. It quickly penetrates to the source of the evil and drives it from the system. ERYSIPELAS AND SCROFULOUS SORES In all irritations of the skin, sores, ulcers, burns, of scrofulous enlargements of any kind, Holloway's Ointment presents a ready and easy means of cure. It manifests a peculiar power in restraining inflammation, removing stagnation, cooling the heated blood, and checking an acrimonious and unhealthy discharges. DISEASES ATTENDANT ON CHILDHOOD. Diseases incident to early life fall more under the many agement of the mother than the medical man. Holloway's Ointment should therefore be regarded by her as te 41 Household Treasure," as it never fails in bringinpr out the rlsb in measles and scarlatina: and for the removal of all skin diseases it's effect is miraculous. In cases of whoopinn eough and croup, this invaluable Ointment should be rubbey twice a day upon the throat and chest, and the youngest invalid will derive therefrom the most soothing relief Two or three of Holloway's famous Pills, reduced to a powder, will augment the curative powers of this Ungent. Both the Ointment and Pills should be used too the fonowi-ijp cases: Bad legs Bad Breas Bums Bunions Bite of Mos- Betoes and Sand- Flies Cooo-bay Chiego-foot Chilblains Chapped hands Corns (Soft) Cancers Contracted and Stiff Joints Elephantiasis Fistulas Gout Glandular wellings Lumbago Piles Rheumatism Scald Heads Sore Nipples Sore Throat.
