BY ORDER. THE SPECTATOR, 1, WELLINGTON STREET, STRAND, LONDON, Price, 6d.; Stamped, 7d. THE SPECTATOR, founded in 1828 by the Tiate Mr. Rintoul, has now retained for thirty-four years a character for independence, which its critics declare has, under its new proprietary, Messrs. Townnd and Button, the former editors of the Friend of India, and of the Economist respectively, become almost arrogant. The Paper is the organ of no party, coterie, or individual. Its object is simply to express, in every department of life, the thoughts of educated Liberals-the only thoughts which in England are apt to find inadequate expression. Conse- quently, in political principle, the Spectator is thoughtful Whig, but with a more decided tendency towards reforms at home and the extension of orderly freedom abroad than the old Whigs were supposed to have. Since its establishment, however, it has subordinated all party interests to the general welfare of the people. On theological questions it is the object of the Spectator to maintain the principle of Christian liberty, and, while expressing a deep and reverential faith in the great Truths of Christianity, to do battle against all forms of intolerance and religious oppression. To carry out these views, the proprietors have the assist- ance of a staff large enough to ensure a reasonable certainty that every topic discussed shall be treated by some one who haa made it a subject of special study. On all public questions, and more especially on all foreign Questions, this journal commands the best sources of in- formation, and has repeatedly during this year been the first to make the true bearing of events apparent to its readers. Its object, however, is not so much to supply news as to express the feeling of the educated classes on the news, and correct that vagueness and bewilderment of thought which the constant receipt of news in little morsels has such a tendency to produce. This is accomplished, first by a scries of exhaustive leaders on the topics and the literature of the day, and secondly by an arrangement peculiar to the paper-three Pages composed of terse paragraphs, containing the entire history of the week, told not in minute detail, but in the Way in which a clubman of good information would relate the news. On the first week of the present year the Proprietors ISsued a Supplement, which they design to be annual. It contained a complete account of the history, condition, and fesources of the foity reigning families of Europe. As a very limited number now remains of this Supplement, it can only be had with the paper to intending subscribers. Price yearly, 30a. 4d. half-yeaily, 15s. 2d.; quar- terly, 7s. 7d. Walton and Maberley, 1862, pp. 349.) We have been informed by a manufacturer of Cod Liver Oil that probably not one-tenth of the Oil which is soli is altogether derived from the liver of the Cod fish. It is, however, impossible in private pra etice to determine whe- ther the Oil "hich we prescribe is genuine Cod Liver Oil or not, and hence we think it a great advantage that there is one kind of Cod Liver Oil which is universally admitted to be genuine-the LIGHT BROWN OIL, supplied by Dit, I)E JONGH. It has long been our practice, when prescribing the Oil, to recommend this kind, since, amidst so much variety and uncertainty, we have confidence in its genuineness."
