W^EJKLT/IT If^TKOSPECT. [FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] LONDON, JUNE 20, 1S1]. "V esterday our gracious Queen dissolved Parliament— a Parliament of which Mr. J. Ilunie tiulv said, that the good and the wise need fed no regret if such a one should never meet again; and now it is for the good, and the wise, and the patriotic to see to it that such another House of Commons shall never more insult the under- standings, crush the hopes, and trine with the paramount interests of the bulk of the people. The speech of our beloved Sovereign was worthy the head of a great nation, distinguished for its industry, its manufactures, and its intelligence. As if inspired by the tutelar genius of the Island Empire," she tells her people, The paramount importance of the trade and industry of the country, and my anxiety that the exigencies of the public should be provided for in the manner least burdensome to the community, have induced me to resort to the means which the Constitution has intrusted to me of ascertaining the sense of my-pesple upon matters which so deeply concern their welfare. In the exercise of my prerogative I can have no other object than that of securing the rights and promoting the interests of my subjects; and I rely on the co-operation of my Parliament, and the loyal zeal of my people, for support in the adoption of such measures as are necessary to maintain that high station among the nations of the. world which it has pleased Divine Providence to. assign to this cfJuntry," These are sentiments worthy of Britain's Victoria. Shall future generations have to say of the people that their Queen had formed a too favourable opinion of them that she relied on a heartless, pusil- lanimous, degraded race, who had not the spirit to respond to her magnanimous .0; we will not think so meanly of them. We are great by our industry, and can only continue great by a right appli- cation of it. To talk as the D ike of Wellington iguo- rantly does, of making the nation great by rendering her independent of foreigners for the means of sub- sistence, is worse than absurd. In the arena of political economy his Grace is no conjurer. He Ü; a great man in the camp and the battle-field; but in political science the highest praise that can be awarded him is that he is frequently shrewd--always honest and strnghtforward. The day that this country becomes independent of foreigners she must become a second Japan—must boai furnish and consume all that constitutes the staples of her industry and its application, and all that her popu- lation require to render them comfortable and happy; nay, to make them at any time a match for whatever toe may assail them. Every day that passes over us adds a thousand souls to our population; but the surface of our domestic empire continues the same; what inference, therefore, can be more lair or legitimate than that, in order to secure an increase of our means commensurate with the Jij^-ease of the population, it. must ever be a matter of the greatest importance to cherish those artificial re- sources which have already raised us to a pinnacle of eminence of which Venice and Genoa were dim types in the middle ? From all parti of the Empire we rejoice to be able to -say, that every day's assures us that a spirit of gene- rous enthusiasm aitinrnu." lie great mans ot the electora. body; while dismal forebears appear to brood over tlis spirit of the anti-national f'actiou pits itself against the vital interests of the nation. LA.NCASTEKIAX SCHOOL.—On Monday evening, the bay" of this school were publicly examined before the committer previous to the commencement of the summer vacation. It affords us great pleasure to state, that the progress made by very many of the children gave great satisfaction to the committee. The answers they gave spontaneously to the various questions put in arithmetic, geography, ke., evinced the interest they felt in these subjects, and the care with which they had been taught by the master, Mr. Brown. We never felt so great an interest in this excelieirt. Institution as on the present occasion; and we feel great pleasure in commending it to the warm and generous support of our teUow-townsmcn. We understand when the sCHool re-opens, various im- provements will he introduced into its management, and that it will be regularly visited by two members of tile committee, who will 11 report progress" from time to time. We forgot to mention that we were much pleased Wth the writing department; many of the boys having already attained considerable proficiency in this useful d .J 'n) e proílClCIICY 111 t liS use U and important branch or education. The congregations were very large, both morning and evening, and the deep interest whien they took in the services was evinced not only by the crowded aopearance of the chapd, but also Ly the very liberal manner in which they responded to the eloquent appeals of riie minister. On the following Tuesday, a tea liieetiu", having-for its object the support of the same Institution, was held in the spacious and commodious room which has been recently erected in the town, for the purpose of being occupied as a W eslejan Sunday School and General Infant Day School. 1 ne tea meeting on the important occasion of opening tne room for the luJlowcl1 employment of Sabbath teaching, was very numerously and respectably attended and a;tcr all bad practically manifested their admiration o. the cake, tea, &"e., provided hy the ladie", antI a verse ot thanks- giving had been sung to the Giver ot all jpod, .J. bucK- ley, Esq. was called to the chair. On Mon- day, the 11-th inst., the llev. W. Roberts, of Atnlwch. preached an excellent sermon _at ldangesiii chaj ei, to a crowded congregation, from 2 Kings ii. 11 — ] | i £ e ^irew a comparison (without, however, going too far) between the prophet Elias, and our departed friend, with regard to the ministry, times, life, and death, of each and brought forward several motives for encouragement, under this afflictive dispensation. On the following morning the friends of the deceased assembled at Vron (his late resi- dence) at nine o'clock. The coffin being brought to the door, the Rev. II. Griffith, perpetual curate of LJamlry- garn, read verses 18 to 21< and 27 of the 1st chapter of Philippians, made a few remarks, and concluded with prayer. The procession set out at 10, headed by the rector of Llangefni, the llev. H. Griffith, of Llandrygarn, and three medical gentlemen, on horseback. Then fol- lowed the hearse and mourning coach, gigs, and cars, of which there were about fifty, followed hy horsemen, two abreast, amounting to ne:lrly :ZOO,and a large concourse on toot. At Menai Bridge and Garth Ferry, the procession was swelled by great numbers from Caernarvon and Bangor, who were anxious to testily their respect for the deceased. Here also the precession was joined by the clergyman of the parish in which the funeral took place. At the time the procession reached Beaumaris, it was one mile and a half in length, and contained at least ten thousand people. At half-past two, it arrived at Llanvaes church, which is one mile and a halt from Beaumaris, and fourteen from Vron. The lesson for the occasion was read by the minister of the parisii^ and the rest of the service by tiie Rev. I-leni-yi Never was greater respect paid to the memory of a minister of Christ. There was a general cessation of business all along the road— all the shops at lkaumaris were closed—the vessels in the liar hour, as aiso those at Bangor, had their flags half- mast high. There was preaching at the Calvinistic Me- thodist chapel at Beaumaris on the evening of the funeral, and Oil the prcvious evening there were meetings for p-ayer in every chnpcl in that town, i nc ii.ev. H'chard .Lloyd, of Beaumaris, was buried in Llanvaes churchyard: he and Mr. Elias were the first (in Anglesea) who had been ordained to the Methodist ministry, thirty years ago. They were likewise particularly intimate, and the latter had more than once expressed a wish to he buried near his old friend. He was accordingly interred alongside Mr. Lloyd's grave, in preference to being buried at LLmfechell, or Llangefni, his former and latter places of residence. "They were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided. Thus the grave closed the distinguished career of one whose religious influence I)as been, and long will be, felt throughout the Principality.
PEMBROKESHIRE. !
PEMBROKESHIRE. COUNTY OF PEMBROKE AD BOROCOH. — Most shuneful jobbing has been again perpetrated here, nlike disgraceful and dishonourabl e to all parties con- cerned. Sir John Owen,^ B.tronet, (hiding his ground rather slippery in the County, resigns in favour of Viscount Krnlyn, on condition that he is to be returned tor the r,)or Sit- James Grnharu to seek his fortune again,, witiiont the politeness of giving him due notice to quit. The conduct of Sir John Owen has crea^ "d great disgust, and he has certainly no claim now on the horongh of Pembroke. Now is the time for a man of inde^n^t principles—a man who will not be the slave of any p to come forward and rescue both Countv and Borough '"m the oppressive and un- due influence of two powerful thereby over threw this foul attempt upon the -hertiej and rights of the people. HAVERFOI.D-.VBST.—The Tory Char'fs' of this town, in their unconquerable hostility to liberal pr.e^ples, and while labouring under the influence of some iiienui. Jallu- cination which effected a derangement of their sapient craniums, became demonstratively "convinced" that they could oust our present member, Sir Richard Philipps, from the representation of this constituency. A ccord- ingly, a ridiculous piece of twaddle, which they styled a "requisition to Viscount Emlyn." was soon concocted, and which, from its style and crudities, we r-re certain is the oUsprin.? either of the brain of the WEALTHY baronet who hawked it from door to door, or of some other equally inte'di?em and powerful mind. The requisition was firs' taken ?o the printer, and one copy of it struck eft: which was given to the worthy birnn?t, to grace it wuh signa- 'L? tit?,il;is 1 1 ory¡sm and (nanlim: arc at a discount here; the requisition was. fortunately for the pocket of the young Viscount, as barren of signatures as the hearts of the Tory Chartist concocters of it are of love to their country and of loyalty to their Queen. When this pre- cious specimen of Tory composition was taken to a friend of -otirs, only —yes, blush ye Tories with very shame—only two signatures were fhund attached to it, and one was the name of a certain childish publican, and the other the name of a certain Tory scribe, whom we some two or three weeks ago immortalized in the columns of the Welshmen. What may have been the number of signatures subsequently obtained, whether it amounted to 12, or as some say to 13, the attempt was a signal failure. Now, we will not say that the young aspirant to legislative honors, anymore than those intimately connected with him, was the instigator of this same requisition hut yet. it is one of those unaccountable circumstances which will sometimes happen, that as soon as it was known that there was no prospect of success for the heir of Stackpole in Haverfordwest, the Tory Sir John O.ven received notice to clear the way for Ins return for Pembrokeshire. Accordingly, the honorable hart, has retired, and this raw offset of Toryism pops into the vacant seat. We much wonder if the electors of Pembrokeshire will thus sutler themselves to be sold, without lifting up their voices against the contract. Time, however, will disclose. The Tories are now become so rabid, that it is scarcely safe to approach them; and, to injure Sir Richard as much as possible, are promulging that he, fearing the loss of his own scat, has mad e himselt a party to this Tory job, and has requested his friends to interest themselves in the return of Viscount E,nlyn. Wed not believe a word of it, and trust that our member will give this slander an unqualified contradiction, as the report is believed by liianv. A partial canvass was made of the town last week, hut the inhabitants of Pen- broke Dock are not to be interfered with for afew days "Qnrpra vernm." The topic of conversation is the qualification of members. 'I he lav. yers of the town differ in toto on the subject, and arguments run high between them. By this arrangement goods can be had from Manchester, Birmingham, WK') the greatest expedit ion and despatch, and persons embarking oti board the steamer at Cardigan will arrive in London railroad. Great praise is due to those through whose exertions these arrangements have been effected, and particularly to Mr. B. Evans. Cardigan, *vho has had a great ileal of correspondence with the Liverpool merchants upon the subject; and as we are friends to every public accommodation, we wish the present undertaking every success, and if we may iudge from the reception the steamer met with on its first trip the 18th inst. (thousands of spectators greeting its arrival with loud iiuraas), it is to be supported by tiie tradesmen of Cardigan and its vicinity, and along the line of coast generally. DEVIL'S BIUI>GE.—The Devil's Bridge may be said to be one of the great wonders of Wales. Whoever comes to Aberv^twith would be deemed a Goth, indeed, if he does not visit this enchanting spot. The awful thrill which one feels in looking down its tremendous declivity —the roar of its terrific cascade, ns it thunders along, like the "spirit of wrath," from precipice to precipice, can never be erased from the memory. A,JF.;IYSTVVITII.—EI.KCTIOX.—The canvassing FOR air. Pryse and Mr. IJarford has been most active an d per- severing during the last week. Col. Mr. Harford visited the town for the first time in his life, on Thursday, and next day commenced operations by issuing an address, stating his principles to be strictly Conservative. Mr. Pryse's com- s c ii, mittee have been indefatigable in their exertions from the commencement, and on Friday they published a state- ment, that up to that day Mr. Pryse had a clear majority of lli) votes. On Monday last, Mr. Pryse himself, ac- companied hy his committee, called upon all the electors, with the view of thanking them for their unshaken and unalterable fidelity to him as their representative for the last quarter of a century. It being a market day, and the weather very fine, the scene was truly exciting. We never saw Mr. Pryse look better. The result of the day's canvass was very flattering, and there is not the shadow of a doubt but that Mr. Pryse will he returned b1 an overwhelming majority. On Tuesday, he published the following address to the electors — To the Independent Electors of the BorougU of Aberyst- with.—Gentlemen,—Tiie success of my Canvass has been most flattering and decided, and proves beyond a doubt that you are as warm as ever in support ot those liberal principles on which I have always acted, and that. not- I -i -i ?v ys actei t tli withstanding the formidable force arrayed against me, you are resolved again to return me as your Repr-?- sentative to the House of Commons.
