BOTH the Government and the country will have reason to be satisfied with the debate on Monday night In both Houma upon the Eastern Question: the Govern- ment became, notwithstanding the indecent eagerness of Mr. GLADSTONE to eonstrae the motions in the Honse of Commons Into a vote of confiderce, their polloy his been trium- phantly endorsed, and the country beoauss It has been proved to demonstration that it has been ably guided through a grave crisis, and that the future of Its interests will be seourely guarded. It has been the misfortune of the liberal party la the present Session that every one of Its attacks has brought to the Government increased honour and con- fidence. Particularly has this been the oate on the Butera quelllon, The deputaiton whlci waited upon Lord DEBBY, evidently in the hope of embarrassing the Government, afforded the Foreign Minister an opportunity not only of defeating Its object, but of check- mating the exalted Radicals In the House of Commons, who were obliged, in consequenoe, to take the whole sting out of their resolu- tion. As the Times very fairly stated yes- terday, one point was not brought out with inffiolent clearness in Monday's debates, but it is nevertheless of the highest Importance ia reference to the future, "It Is the unexpected revelation during the last three months of the extent and depth of out International influence. It is soarcelytso much to iisy that we have, if we wish it, the settlement of the present difficulty in one own hands." The meaning of this Is that If we watch our opportunity we can carry Russia and Austria .with uta any schmne we may devise for the pacification of the Insurgent provinces of Turkey, lhis is the net result of the foreign policy of a Conser- vative Ministry. Whether It was wise of the Radicals to call such conspicuous attention to the fact, while we still tingle with the remembrance of the contempt with which England under the GLADSTONE Ministry was regarded abroad, is a question we leave those gentlemen to settle among themselves. The friendly resolution of Mr. BauoR paved the way for the amendment of Mr. FORSYTH, who advocated the policy recently foreshadowed in Blackwood of persuading Turkey to place Bosnia and Herzegovina on the same footing as Servia and Bouman's, and of supporting the whole as a bulwark against Russian aggression ia thb direction. This, however, is a matUr which cannot be dlscuised in the present oondltlon of affairs, and the Government had praotically to deal only with the amendment of Lord ESMOND FITZMATJRICS, backed as It was by a great effort on the part of Mr. GLADSTONE. The ex-Premier, speaking as the last surviving member in the Honse of Oom- mons, of the Government responsible for the Crimean war, found himself In the position of having to defend that war against the criticism of Mr. BRIGHT and others, who, for party purposes, pretend that we are drifting Into what they oall a simi- lar mtatake. Mr. GLADSXOXK contends not only that we were oompalled to under- take that war, but that nothing then done Ie at all inconsistent with anything whioh might now be proposed to improve the con- dition of the Christian subjeots of the Porte. We had to destroy the pretensions of Russia to a preponderating influence In European Turkey, and we did It so effectually that the terror of Basila ia now, an Mr. GLADSTONE says, a" mere bugbear," while at the same time we acquired the right h a dominant voice In the ootmoUa of the SULTAN which we may now turn to prac- tical use. What then Is the complaint against the Government at the present mo- ment t It is not that they are responsible for the supposed Turkish atroeltlei In BlllprIt. for the House was happily spared tie re- i iteration of that mischievous noasenie.
