THE SOUTH WALES ELEVIN IN…
THE SOUTH WALES ELEVIN IN I LONDON. REVIEW OF THE PLAY BY THE CAPTAIB. Writing from Queen's Gate, London, on Saturday, Mr. J. T. D. Llewelyn, the captain of the South Wales Eleven, furnishes us with the following review of the play of hla team. He says :-1 have pleasure In sondiag you some statistics on the perform- ances of the South Wales cricket eleven in their London matches this year. The con- stitution of the eleven was, as may be remem- bered, settled by a match oommlttee on the occasion of the trial match at Swansea on J uly 4, but was partly modified by some gentlemen, such as Mr. Basil Williams, O. 0, Chambers, W. Crawford, A. Thackeray, F. Oobden, and others, being unable to give their ser- vice. There was, moreover, at the last mo. ment, some uncertainty as to the power of two of the useful men In the team, Messrs. T. B. Jones and B. G. Davles, to remain in London, and the eaptaln had, at the last moment, to get others to come up "uu uu their places for the last match- and to Messrs. Hanrahan and Charles Riches he must express his thanks for so promptly at- tending to his request. I hope that the result has justified the selection. The South Wales team Is materially stronger than last year. The fresh blood in the persons of Messrs. IvIDS and Jenkins, Brockhank, and Outhbert Riches has proved quite worthy of the occasion, and in the terse words of one of the team our tail can wag." The bfettiog averages oomes thus Completed ÚlJ.ÏDgw. RUDS. Average. O. P. Levit 6 292 58 2 A. Walker 5 280 66 H, hln. 5 136 27'1 L. Jenkins 5 109 21'4 J. T. Di Llewelyn. 5 100 20 J. O. Lloyd 1 3. « B, Ord, not out 0 11 1 Four matches were played, of which we lost one, and won three. South Wales in the segregate made 1162 runs from the bat^for the less of G4 wickets, giving an average of 21.28 per wicket. Their adversaries made 1,090 runs from the bat, for a lass of G8 wickets, or an average of 18-2. South Wales gave 61 extras, and received 100. On two ocoaslons the South Wales Eleven allowed no extras throughout the innings. Unfortunately, I cannot give yon the bowling analysis, as the scores of the two first matches have never come into my hands. Messrs. Lewis and T. B. Jones were the best, with E. W. Jones, L. Jenkins, and J. T. D. Llewelyn for change. It was in this department of the game that Mr. T. B. Jones proved of the greatest service to his side. On one occasion of a fresh batsman coming in, his not out companion gave him the friendly warning of "Take care, they break horribly from the off," when, to the great amusement of the field, who were near enough to witness it, and to the utter discomfiture of the new comer, T. B. pitched him a ball on his legs, which, working sharply the other way, cleared away his off ball, and sent him rue- fully back to the pavilion. Of the individual services of the Eleven I suppose I must say something, though 1 muoh prefer speaking of their united exer- tions. The fact of an eleven pulling well together and working together will often mere than counterbalance superior Indi- vidual merit. The palm will be freely and unanimously accorded to C. P. Lewis, whose eplennid upstanding and manly cricket was admired and respected by friend and foe. His Innings of 120, on the Oval was a splendid esample of severe hitting, comprising as It did two fives, nine fours, fourteeen threes, eleven twos, and only ten singles. And be it remembered that every run made had to be run out; no allow- ances for boundary hits, which are so gene- rally given in big matches, and which aid so much to produce big scores, partly by preventing fieldsmen being placed well out for a favourite hit, or a catch, parly by eavhig the batsman the phyatcil bard work of running for his hits. His innings clao cf sixty-four at Brighton com- prised three sixes, a five, four fours, &0., and in each of these two large innings he was run out," the opposing eleven being seemingly quite unable to get his wicket in any othsr way. South Wales may justly be proud of such a cricketer, who is good enough to tike his placa In any eleven and In any country: Ashley Walker's cricket ehowed a steadiness and accuracy to be learnt only on gcod wickets, but this virtue of great steadiness is of inestimable importance to win a match at a pinci. Ever confident, never flurried, on a good wicket and against first- rate bowling his style will score when others fail. His example at Swansea will surely bear fruit; his maty friends will be glad to see how thoroughly well he has acquitted him- self by his high average of 56 runs ter Inn- ings. Ivins stands next in the averages, having t cored uniformly and well, while his fielding was first-rate aud his return quick, so that he not only made many runs but saved many runs. Lewis Jenkins was worth his pldcc for his longstopping alone, the few byes that appear on the debit ecore sheet being principally lost when, with slow bowling, no longstop was used some of them indeed off his own bowling, fcr Dot only had he to longstop to the fast paces of C. P. Lewis and JI. W. Jones, but he was called upon-and that at the Oval with marked success—to bowl. Of the remainder the. wicket keeping of E. G. Davies was really good and sound. He had downright bad luck In the decisions of umpires, of which the least said tha soonest mended," but he made his mark, and the eleven had thorough confidence in him, and hope to see him again fuelling that most responsible post. Brockbank's fielding was really bril11ar.t, an example, I am sorry U say. many of us require to copy. By his dash and safe handling he saved numberless runs, and covered a larger extent of ground than any other man in the Eleven. B. W. Jones proved tLe most useful change bowler, and plated up well. His fast bowling would analyse well if I had the materials tor com- piling the figures. It was strdht and good, and in the Prince's match he seemed set for a long innings, when he was left not out. Unfortunately we lost the valuable services of Outhbert Riches early In. the second match, as a very fast ball from the Earl of Lamemborough, hit his uproteotea hand, and rendered him incapable of taking any further part in any of the matches. He formed up well, and fielded excellently, and prom Is, d to be of great service, so that the Eleven felt his loss severely, His brother, who played fwj him at Brighton, made an excellent catch. T. B. Jones was most unfortunate in the run- cett.ing depntiiont, but his bowling and fielding were f.r,jt-ra'.e, and the Eleven could not be complete without him. And the captain, what of him ? Well, if you say he Is getting into the sere and yellow leaf ot cricket, but taat hit heart is still, and ever will be, in 'ho noble old game, you will say more of hira tb.w you m<\y of many younger men. My cr-kket flourish, and may South Wales again next year send up a good and pleasant band of cricketers who will work well together, and whose "hil may wag." s
-TURF NOTES.
TURF NOTES. The concluding day at Goodwood was productive of the best sport, and If previous running was not cxsctly eonifrmed by the results, the Ulent were not very wide of the mark. Ooomaiila, who had not time to get on her legs In the Stewards' Cap, won the Chesterfield Cup again In the commonest of canters, the secopd to her being Monaoo, who showed that him previous win was not a fiako. Dal. ham ran a great horse under his 9st. Stbt., and his inferiority over BopbloolD ora this oocasloa shows that the latter must have gone off stnoe Ascot. The most Inexplicable form was that of Hellenist, after his ready defeat of Kaleidoscope and Allumette on Wednesday. The fields for the Stewards Cup and Chesterfield Cap were the largest of the meeting, and Trapplst ran well under his big 1m. (est In the first-Domed affair, though he had to soitaln two farther defeats, LowUndar defeating him In a canter for the Lennox Stakes, while B'II1 Bon but him on Friday In the Duke of Richmond's Plate, the latter running up to the form he ex- hibited In the Two Thousand week, when he defeated MouiquetaLre easily at a difference of 71b. Mcuiquetalre was a good performer at Goodwood, I he landed the Chichester Stakes, after waking • prominent show for the Steward's Cap, and two t the cost dlsUngniihed of the other aoitor handi- cap winners were Dogfdale and.Grassendale. the first tamed of whom has greatly improved since she came nto possession of Sir George Chetwjnd. TheGood- wood Stakes fell to one of the warmest favourites t ver made for that race. At the same time, Hamp- Ion had nothing to spate when he passed the post, aid had a stronger lad than Howey bsan on Ad- miral Byng the last-named would have bsatsn him. Ccrreggio, the aliker three year-old competitor, ran ell, u did Finis, but! the Amerlosal horn, Mate, oould not stay the dlstanse, and performed worse than did his stable companion, Preakneis, In the Cup on the third day. The latter finlshsd third to New Holland and Temple Bar, about the I.tor of whom as little as 5 to 4 was taken abou; a quarter of in hour Beiote the race, though hsfore the flag fall am much as 2 to 1 vu ooS-Unable. On the previous day a bet of ?5,000 and £ OO!) .am accepted about Temple Bar for one of ??i dh. tinguished personages ttat were present. New Bciltnd showed himself to be a first elati stayer by making all the running, and he reversed his Aicot foim with Fteeman in a most marked ninner. Louise Victoria broke down, and has ran her bit race. She was lame when the arrived at tiu meet. ing, and it Is a pity Mr. Cartwright was so per- slstent In his determination to run her. Some first class two-year-olds ran during the four days, the best of them probably bslng Slllvo and SutlieUgh, with the latter of whom Mr, H. Baltjzzt woaiwa races, All Heait wis beaten so easily by Coltneis, that he cannot stand the ghost of a chanoe for the trger, for which Forerunner still reads bet-.or thin Skylark, who succumbed to him lln the Drawing- Kocm Sttkes. Petri.roh did not show for tai Utter event, and II, perhaps, all the better for It, He has done plenty of work this week, and do his KI,ber, who has no engagement before the Uon- caitcr meeting. Forerunner may show At York, which will ba the next plaoe that Thunderer will show at. as Mr. Vyner means having another try with the latter for the cap. The general followers of the Turf will sopurn for another week In the south, and the attendance Is lure to be large at Brighton and Lewes, chero fie ipott will take up the five days, commencing Taes- di y, Thtre will olxo bo racing at Cnestiirliald and Ridcllffe, but at these places the field. will be small, and I shall confute my remaruto he Sussex programmes, bosh of which are of the usual attrac- tive character. The Brighton Stakes will be run on the opening day, and New Holland has been weighted up to the full strength of his Goodwood form, as the handicapper has given him 9it 71b. There will be a declaration of forfeits on Msnday evening, and those I fancy most at tho time of writing are Mate,.71t 7ib; King Log, 7aS 4th I Polo- naise, 71t; Innlihowen, 7it; Cato, 6.t 12tb; Hop- bloom, 6st 91b; and Admiral Byng, 61t 9';), The Is at named pair may be kept for the Lewes Grand Handicap, In which case I shall expect to gse POLONAISE or INNIsHOwm lucœllful. Tbere are some smart t wo- jeirold, In the Corportlon Stakes, the beet looking being Souses and OHAUAST, while PLACID and GILISTOKE are apparently the best pair In the Ohampsgne Plate. The minor Handloap. will be best dealt with from the spot, and theBsvendean Stakes Club Two-year-old Stalleurp dependent In a certain measure upon the runnlogforthe Champaign Stakes on the opening day. The Brighton Cap will be an Intetestlng affair, but It will hardly bring out Julius Cælar or Springfield, and now that he has incurred a 101b. penalty, New Holland reads less dsngetous than Preakneis and Temple Bar. I am not sure that the latter is sound eaoagh to stand the brant of another battle, however, and prefer the American, though the latter will not win If JXSTEB Is found at the po-t fit and well. In the Qaeen's Plate at WtnOb2.tar the latter defeated N a,, Holland In a canter, and this mekes him the beat-looking for the Brijhton Cap after the Goodwood form of Prince diltykaff's hc:te. The bill of fare Isiued forth from Lewes li more Interesting than that issued from the seatlde meet- ing, and no deubt the Grasd Handicap to be decided on the concluding day will be a cipltal medium of (peculation again, On the first day the Priory S\ake8 will prove one of the most Interest- ing tvrc-year-old events of the season, and te value of the prize will not fall far short of £2,000 If the runners number a docon and a half, as they should do. The following are the best performers en. ga&edShillelagh, Palm Fiower, Chevron, Placlda, Dee. Strathcalro, Chamtnt, Don Carlos, Nina, Lady Ronald, Ernest, the Sylva filly, Faiher Matthew, Rocey, and Blue Riband, 0, these Shillelagh and Palm Fiower have incurred 7 lb. penalties, and the latter does not rev: 30 woll cs Cnevron, who wlil meet him a 4 lb. tetter terms than he did at t-ie last Stockbildge meeting. With 7lb dlfferenc) In tile teims It should be a near thing between Snh[1!b and CHAMiKT on the Goodwood form, and, stipu- lating for a run, 1 shall take the latter and OHABOS, though It = ey not be sivlatb'.e to stand the Fienoii colt If he runs at Brl"hhn and gets a penalty. Of the many In the DeWarrenne handlcip, alosACJ leads well with 7.t 7ib, bat tnere id all acseptance for this race, and It will be best dealt with from the spot. The only other event I need allnda to is the Lewes Gratd fi»oo!csp, for which Snail (8.,), Prodigal (7.t 101b), Organist (7.t 41b), Jastcr ("st 4:b), fcfcDtcj (7st 2ib), Finis (6,t 101), King Log (6st 101b), Ca'o (6st 7ib), Ad- miral Byng (6at, 4th), Hopblootn (61t 2,0). and H rgist, 6.t" shonid be discovered among tne ac. e ptoll. The latter ran very well Indeed for the Goodwood Cup, and this being the case he should dsrtalcly perform respectably next Saturday uadcr his let.!ent weight. Admiral Byng and J.?i:er are the most attractive of the other three-rear olii, and tbe latter will be well worth attention If be wins tbe Biigliton Cup, as he will have only an addl. tional 31b. to bear. nb orestnt fancies, hovjvsr, are SNAIL and HSSGISI. are SHAII, and HEKGISI.
