A BOY OF FIFTEEX MAKES j,;,3,UOO…
A BOY OF FIFTEEX MAKES j,3,UOO A YEA-R. There is a young gentleman (of fifteen) in England to-day who makes £ 5.000 a year—a-.ii who works for it. IIi. name is Johnny Reiff, an,1 he has been ast-om-hing us lately by hi« marvellous ,io.-l;er- thip. lie has beaten Tod Sloan on hos own ground—and he is ten years younger than Tod, but weighs 301b. less. With bis brown hair, his big bin. eyes, and his chubby face, he looks like a merry littie schoolboy when he's off duty; and in the winter, when there are no racos to win. he is a, real schoolboy, devoting his time to readinj and study. History is his speciality. He began riding three years ago. but he didn't win anything until 1E98. His first win- ning mount w.-n Mary Black, at Washington. Park track, near Chicago. Mary Black was what racing men called a 30 to 1 chance. But the tiny jockey handled her .0 skilfully that he brought her under the wire first. The women on the grand stand and on the dub- house lawn were the most enthusiasiio cheerere. It seems just like a baby riding." they said. Johnny'E actual weight that day was only 68ib. Johnny Reiff ridC'8 his horses to victory sit- ting bolt upright; and it isn't merely his featherweight that has made him win on so many mounts. Young a. he is, he has shown genuine skill. He has been introdnoed to the Prince of Wales, and has shaken hands with the Duchess of Marlborough. He has been :ionised on eer, E-,Ili-ih h. ?tt,d,d. but it h,,?n't English racccourse he attended, but it hasn't spoilt hi m yet. The i?.ry ru., that the Dewest fashionah> racecourse sensations is for the. English beauties to go to the paddock and hug Johnny when he has won a particularly exciting race It began when ho rode Bijliopwood to victorv at Newmarket iast year. Bat that etory-like Johnny himself—comes from America. Reiff, who is the son of a proud tinsmith, scorns the fashionable London hotels. Ho prefers the more healthy surroundings of New- market. where he (ats and drinks sparingly, an,1 keeps his weight down by constant eser- cise.
