Honse coals were in good request, notwith- standing the warm weather, and there was an activo demand for No. 3 Rhondda and No. 2 Bliondda coals. Patent fuel and coke values were maintained. Pitwood prices were firm and advancing. It was reported that a large colliery tirm at the Docks had accepted a ten- der for 50.0M) tons of pitwood to be delivered over the year at 22, 6.1 for ordinary pitprops. and .'5s for special rsizes. Thi, annonncement naturally increased the stability of the market, and other large contracts at similar pric., are ctated to be under negotiation. The crisis in the tin-plate industry gives cause for mnch uneasiness just DOW, What with the tin-plate millmen's request for the 5 per cent. advanoe, the sheet mill hands' dissatisfaction with the new rates recently agreed upon, the annealers pressing for an all-round increase for that class of work, and the tinhouse men's agitation for a uni- form 3d. per box, matters are unfortunately in a turmoil. A couple of the mills at the Midland Works are idle, and will remain so for some weeks longer, as several sections of the machinery connected therewith are being renewed. The men, however, will in the mean- time be allowed to share the work at the Morriston seven mills in six hours' shifts. The one mill idle at the Dyffryn will soon be in readiness to resume operations. At the other works in the valley the same number of mills are operating as on the preceding week. Continued briskness is exhibited at all the steel-producing establishments. Next month will see another 5 per cent, advance In wages conoeded to the st-I ..rk?rs' Dur- ing the past month prices of tin b-. ad- ?.need but slightly compared with the m? responding month of the first p,ter of the year. The l'-du,ti n at the new ulphate of copper works at Llansamlet will be com- menced this week. The rapidity with which the concern h. been brought i te perfected state is mrtainly due to the activity and en?gv disp'ayed by the general manager, Mr. Henry A ?tey. The "It,r n?1 =1 eet??blit!h-nt,? ar working on the lines as reported last week, and the same assertion applies to the Mannesmann Tube Work. and the blast furnaces adjacent. POOR -MILK AT CARDIFF
POOR MILK AT CARDIFF WORST CASE FOR YEARS. At Cardiff Police-court on Monday the Stipendiary had before him an extraor- dinary raSe under the Food and Drugs Act. when Alfred George Green, milk vendor, of Portmanmoor-road. was summoned for selling milk from which no less than 50 per cent, of butter fat had been extracted. Inspector Green related his visit to defen- dant's shop. He bought some milk from Green personally, after waMling him that it would he submitted to analysis. lIe now pro- duced the analyst's certifirate, whioh showed that the milk contained only 1.47 per cent, of butter fat. whereas it should have had 3 per cent. Tho Stipendiary rhar!)t.cT¡8EXl the case as the most serious of the kind he had ever had l>efore him, and asked the defendant what he had to day. The si-Ilier stated that he sold the oiilk as he received it from the Cheddar Valley Company. The Stipendiary: Have you the warranty? Defendant: No, sir. I cannot get a warranty from them. Mr. Hallonan, who prosecuted, remarked that according to his instructions this was a practice very prevalent in Cardiff. The Stipendiary said it struck him that this was a very serious case. The extraction of butter fat was greater than he had ever known. Chief-inspector Vaughan: No such case has been heard for years --ir. The Stipendiary, addressing the defendant. informed him that the maximum penalty for this offence was £20, and "this sort of fraud" might have 8prjous consequences, for where the milk was supplied to children they would be robbed of tho nourishment the quantity given them was supposed to contain. It was Un easy thing for retailers to lHotect them- selves by a warranty, and they should never neglect doing sc). He imposed a fine of £ 10 "nli (usts.
