The directors of the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron, and Coal Company (Limited) lmve> issued their report and balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1894. After rafei-i-ing to the depression in trade, the directors state The Midland coal strike of last autumn rcsuiill in "n increased demand for Welsh coal, with a proportionate improvement in priees, but the contracts which the company had run- ning at the time precluded their deriving any matcrial advantage from the improvement in the market excr;>t by incrM3În¡r the output. Efforts were successfully made to effect the latter object, and, to the limited extent indi- cated, the company fully participated in the rise in prices. The profit on the year's working shows (as was also tèo case last year) a substan- tial improvement upon the previous year. This progressive result for two consecutive years, in the face of a continuous fall in prices, may be regarded as highly satisfactory. The above report cannot fail to give satis- faction to the shareholders, and fully justi- fies the action which they took to turn out the old board and put in tho new. Those who have known the works personally for some years will recognise that a great im- provement has taken place in the works and maohinery of the company. This, of course, meant the expejiditure of money, and, con- sequently, the net profit is not SO largo as it would have been if the works had been pro- perly maintained. A dividend of only 2; per cent. will be a new experience to the shareholders, who for the previous six years at least received nothing. The Railway Times states that when the East Glamorgan project next faces the fierce light of the Parliamentary committee-rooms it will be on a direct application from the Barry Railway Company for powers to o u'itd its system, and not under theauspioos of a mysterious company, whose aims and objects are voiled in obscurity, According toO iStub&s* Gutette, in the week ending June 16 there were 174 bills of sale registered in England and Wales. The receiving orders gazetted last week number 101, showing an increase of 3, and the number of registered deeds of arrangement was 80, a decrease of 13. The totals for the portion of the year ie June 16 are: Bills of sale regis- tered for Engtand and Wales 4,339, an increase of 82; the receiving orders gazetted number 2,368, an increase of 166, and the registered deeds of arrangement 2,059, an increase of 151. The number of failures in England and Wales gazetted during the week was 181. The number in the corresponding week of last year was 191, showing a decrease of 10. The number of bills of sale in England and Wallis registered at the Qliepn's Bench for the week was 174. The number in the corresponding week of last year was 174, and the corresponding weeks for the three previous years 156, 149, and 156.
