I LOCAL FINANCE. I rsy OUR FINANCIAL XDITOR.) I CARDIFF. SATURPAT. The traffic returns of the principal railway companies showed an increased revenue compared with the early part of 1893, and, generally speaking, this may be taken as an indication that trade is improving. For the week ended January 13 (the latet; published) the receipts over 19,054 miles amounted to £1,303,565, I\nd, for the corresponding week in 1893, on 18,878 iile"" to XI,281,598, shew- ins an increase of 176 miles and of £ 21,967. The receipts average £ 68 Ss, 3d. per mile, against £ 67 17s. 9d. in the corresponding week last year. Some of the companies can do with a liirgo increase this year to make, up the deflci«nces of 1892, more particularly those which were affected by the coal strike. Here at Cardiff the outlook is not so bright, the coal trade not being in such a flourishing state as could be wished, The Stock Markets have, however, been fairly active duriugf the past week, and on Satur- day more than the average amount of busi- ness was done. Prices, too, are well main- tained, an improvement having taken place in several local securities. A considerable amount of Barry Ordinary Stock has been transferred at 209, and there are still buyers at that price. Taffs and Rhyniueys are, however, idle. lihonddR and SwanseR Bay Debentures are better, a transaction the first for some considerable time-being reported at 107J. London and Provincial Banks have advanced i, with business done at 20, but other securities of this class are stationary. Ebbw ValeB have improved, and Rh" vmney Irons show signs of recovery from the temporary check which they received earlier in the week. Cardiff Corporation Stock is higher, the mean price being now 113. At this price the stock yields x return to the investor of JE2 Is. llàd, per cent. STRANGE CASE AT NEWPORT CHARGE AGAINST A MARRIED WOMAN. At Newport County Petty-seseions on Satur- day Margaret Evans, affed 32, married woman, formerly in scrvice as a domestic servant with Mr. Jaencs Williams, Milton Farm, Llanwern, was charged on a warrant with stealing two pairs of boots, a sheet, a silk handkerchief, a table cloth, and other things, the property ot' her master. Mr. T. Ti,,k,?r J,es "P= for the defence.— The prisoner left her mm?3ter'? service on Satur- :'t:ll'h:ftld week's notice from her .te" Y. hcn) ohe tl?i mhe had got married shertly after Christmas. She had been in his service since May, 1893. Suspicion was aroused that things which did not bplong to her had been placed in the bundle which she sent to Hanwerii Railway Station by a labourer named Joseph Hu¡¡hM. Accordiiigly the pre.-ocntor and his housekeeper, Mies Mary 11 went to the stAtieu, and there the i*onc?r spenel her bundle and handed back to gr. Willi.m3 t?,ble,?lth, some towels, a silk handkerchief, and other things. The boots named in the charge wero placed on her own bed with a piece of brown paper ever them. The bundle when taken to the station was labelled, Marguret Evans, passenger to Newport." She WM arresta 9B Wecj?asd?y. January 17, by Police-constable Wilcox, and, in answer te the charg, said, I packed the parcel, but put nothing in it but.what belonged to myself."— Mr. B. Jones, for the defence, said the prisoner's story ,-a. an abselute denial of the theft. She did not put her master's (fosds into the parcel, at all, nor was Bite able t" vrrite the label on it. The thing8 must have ben put in ¡'T ome per- son who had ill-will towards her, Tni. was not the fi,6t time that t?in?s hd been p?ced in other people's bags. They had read of Bome. thin; of the sort i. the book of ?:odus. As to the prisoner having been married, the fact was that she bad long been married and had four children, but was living apart from her husband and went out to service to maintain herself.—After consideration the chairman of the bench (Mr. Ebcnezer Lewis) said thoy were goiny to give hf-r the benefit of the doubt, though scarcely upon the theory that Mr. Baker Jones had put before theta. Ia the Scripture story it would be found that the things were put in the sacks by friends and not enemies. However, prisoner would be given the benefit of the doubt, and they hoped she would not commit herself again.
