LOCAL FINANCE._I
LOCAL FINANCE. [BY OUR FINANCIAL EDITOR.] CARDIFF, TUESDAY. The market to-day has been fairly active, and a good deal of business has been done in local securities at yesterday's prices. In rails Harrys are rather lower, and coal and iron shares are irregular. The following alteratioos havo taken place:— Rise: D. Davis and Sons H to 12-13, Norths Prefe- rence J to 5i—J. Penrikyber Preference i to 6,f-7t. Cardiff Workmen's Cottage Company 1 to 36-8, Spillers and Bakers Ordinary A to 9i~i- The busil1c" recorded on the Stock. New sellers offered Bute Dock Debentures at 1181, Spillers and Bakers at X9 7s. 6d., International Coal Shares at 3f., &c. Messrs. Ernest Sully and Co., in their weekly report, say:— •• During the past week a fair amount of business has been transacted upon our local market, and there are ¡;jgU!. of improvement in several securities. Barrys have risen from 202 to 205, but the latest transactions have shown a ?ligl,t weakness, stock having been sold at 204 3-16, probably the absence of a be'ter shipping return for the last week has been a factor in this temporary depression. The small amount of the shipments has been accounted for by some by the fact that at the resumption of work shipping in the dock was so congested that some vessels, to save a long- stem, were diverted to other tips. If this be the C",], it is to be hoped that in afc«- days larger ..tp,?tts i!'h¡ if'p:la¡tle\1lb:a:'eee3: Rhymney Ordi??t,?y Stock h., risen from 225 to 227, and f!tnen back again to 224, howing a slight loss for the week. The continued high price of this stock is an evidence of the sanguine hopes which are entertained of the ultimate success of the negotiations respecting the amalgamations. The fate of the Bill for pro- moting this fusion is still one great uncertainty. On tho other band, the loss sustained during the strike is gradually being wiped oft. Tails have risen from 80 to 81. Last week's traffic returns show an increase of £726. The Bank of Wales have been further declining. Commencing tho week at 3, they now stand about 2; London and Provincial are slightly better; Lloyds, also, have been dúne Itt 25 15-16. being an uupro.m"nt. TRADE REPORTS. I TRADE OP CARDIFF. I EXCHANGE, TNEFTDMJ. The coal market to-day maintained a vigorous tone, but, owing to the 8ca.reity of the com. modity. the pales effected for prompt shipment were below the average. There wa." a fair number on 'Change, but there is very little business to report. Pig Iron again seems.. little weaker, not- withstanding that there is a slight increase in the deliveries in each district, so that, appa- rently, the production has been eo reduced as to be slightly exceeded by the demand, and if this is continued the stocks will be again reduced. and taking the whole of the yar, the deliveries will show a considerable increase upon the pre- vious year. Inm and Steel.—The steelworks are still par- tially employed, and the output is in this case again decreased, and prices, it is believed, have reached the bottom; and that whatever inducement in prices was offered no further con- cessions would be justified. Tin-p14tes.-The shipments have for some time past exceeded the production, with the effect that stocks are lower with every proba- bility of a further diminution. There are better reports to hand from America, and a little more Inlying is stated to be going on, as makers have for some time past reeoiled from the ruinous low prices that plates had been run down to. The number of works that have been laid off and the consequence lesser production is bringing about a better state of things the make has been reduced, it is stated, to at least two-thirds of the full complement of the mills, and if this is continued for a little while longer the effect will -on be felt and an improvement shortly brought about. The fall in copper seems to have been arrested, and it does not appear that it will the prophecies that it would reach as low as C40 per ton. as R1J'1 tn8.8ier with a lesser eonumption in proportion to the decrease in the make of tin- plates, which cannot fail to affect it.
