Prisoner was the first member enrolled*by Mr. Cadby in the recently formed shoeblack brigade, which now has its head- quarters in Moira-terrace. Mr. Cadby, before 'admitting prisoner into'this establishment, .paid for his lodgings for a fortnight elsewhere in the town, and he now told the bench that he had alyshad a high opinion of the lad. He believed this was his first offence, and from certain books which he had dis- covered of the "Jack Shepherd" type he feared that prisoner's mind hadbeenpottuted by pernicious literature. Whether that was so 'or not, prisoner showed so little gratitude for the missionary's kindnef;s,tliat he did not scruple 'to steal and decamp to London with his watch. 'and chain and the ther property in question. The Metropolitan police were quickly on 'S°e; ,k t:hr::a c;ï b:e3U¡iy o:r t. Detective DaveY,-risonernow pleaded guilty and the prosecutor still had sufficient interest in him to recommend him to the leniency of the magistrates, who passed.sentence.of one month's imprisonment.

The directors of the Aberdare-Merthyr Col- lieries Company (Limited) have taken four months and a half to prepare their report and balance-sheet for the year ended the 31st of December, 1892, and the document which they have at length brought forth is anything but satisfactory. They commenee their report by expressing regret that the year's working has turned out so badly, a fact which they attri- bute to the heavy fall in coal prices. They then proceed as follows" The outlay on the Hirwain side has been heavy, and the work done on the capital account has been so inter- mixed with what has been done on revenue account that vour directors see no other course open to them but to charge all to capital and deduct from that amount what has been realised by the sale of coals worked. Very extensive buildings, and an electric pumping plant of the most modern type have been erected there in short, the colliery surface has been entirely re-modelled, whilst the workings underground have been put in a proper state of repair and developed with a view of turn- ing out a considerably increased output of conI. In consequenco of these developments, which have heavily drainod the company's finances owing to the continuetl serious depression in the coal trade, your directors thought it prudent in February last to stop the working of coal on the Hirwain side, and all expenditure there except what is abso- lately necessary to keep the workings open and continue the main heading in the new drift on the Seven-foot Seam and completing the winning of the Six foot Seam. On the Nantmelyn side the workings are being kept going, but present prices are unremunerative. One of your directors, Nlr. E. R Moxey, sent in his resignation during the year, and his colleagues regi-et very much the loss of his services. They han) not filled up the vacancy, and it is open for the shareholders to appoint a successor if they so desire it. The director retiring from office is Alr. W. Bailey Hawkins, who, being eligible, offers himself for re-election." About two years ago the Nantmelyn and Aberdare-Merthyr Colliery Companies were amalgamated to the great chagrin of some of the shareholders in the former, who considered that in the Nantmelyn they had a good and pay- ing property. Tho dividends for some years had been exceptionally good, and, in 1890, 80 per cent, was distributed among the ordinary shareholders after 15 to 20 per cent, had been taken out of revenue and expended on improve- ments at the colliery. Of course, coal prices were then higher, but it is scarcely probable that even now the Nantmelyn, properly managed, would leave nothing for the share- holders. Some of those objected to the amalgamation with the Aberdare-Merthyr, which had paid little or 1\ dividend induced the i company to buy them out. and the experience of last year shows them that thpy acted very wisely. For the nine months of 1891 the new company declared a dividend of 4 per cent., but that, we are informed, was never paid, and last year's results appear suffi- ciently clear in the report and balance-sheet just issued. The mixing up of the revenue and capital account is, to say the least of it, an, extraordinary story, and affords a convenient means of hiding away the loss on the Hirwain side. The balance-sheet shows that there is a sum of Z21,172 due to the London and Pro- vincial Bank, and it does not appear that the dividend on E29,875 Seven per Cent. Preference Shares has been provided for. These shares are cumulative, and the holders must, therefore, be satisfied before any distribution can be made on the ordinary. There are Six per Cent. Mortgage Debentures to the amount of i25,715 upon which only £37 appears to have been paid by way of interest. The company owe for rents, royal- ties, wages, and sundries the large sum of £22,277, while 011 the other side there is only £10,910 due from sundry creditors. The pros- pects of the eompany nder these circum- stances are anything but rosy. Messrs. H. J. Pillinger and Co. have fur- nished as with the following report of the Newport market: The market during the past week has been fairly active, and prices have been maintained. The unsettled feeling in the London marisst has extended locally, but only in a few securities. It is a noticeable fact that Bank shares, whether London or provin- cial, have in most cases declined consider- ably. In railway stocks Taff Vale Stock has been rather idle, and only mode- rate business has been recorded. Prices are now about 78<1-, at which several lots are offered. Rhymneys are specially firm, although' there has been a substantial decline. Barrys are in good demand at 193. Rhondda and Swansea Bay Shares have again been in favour, the passing of the company's Bill through Parliament bringing into the market fresh sup- porters. The price is now about £8. It is confidently expected that the long-looked-for improvement will take place, and also be re- tained, as the difficulties seem to be overcome. As regards capital that may be re- quired, we have no hesitation in saying that any amount would be forthcoming, as there are other developments, to take place which will materially benefit this line. In Bank shares the chief declines have taken place in Lloyds, which have been done at 25t. London and Provincials have been transferred at 19, and National Bank of Wales at 10. With regard to the latter, it is expected a meeting will be called, to take place in about three weeks hence, for the shareholders to, consider proposals of amalgamation which will then be laid before them. As it is necessary for P. notice of 21 days to be givon, it may, therefore, be presumed that the details are now ready and waiting to be. confirmed by the shareholders. In the Mis- cellaneous Market Spillers and Bakers have, occupied a good deal of attention, and a little firmer business has been done.at 10k. Blands have-been done at 15s., and", few Dry Docks, have also changed hands. In Collieries, there has been some activity in Norths at 33s,; also Albions and D. Davis and Sons Shares. TRADE REPORTS. I
TRADE REPORTS. I SCOTCH IRON AND STEEL TRADES. I GLASGOW, Friday. ,The Scotch iron trade is steady, with a mode- rate business, and little change in prices. The demand for Scotch warrants is slow, and,as some holders made considerable salesthis week, prices were easier. The fluctuations were, however, within narrow limits, from 40s 4 £ d to 40s 2 £ d cash, with forward rates in proportion. Cleve- land iron sold from >33s 7W to 33s 9d cash. Business.in hematite iron hasnbeen very limited, and prices are unaltered. There is no change in the amount of production of pig iron, the fur- naces in blast numbering 71, compared with 76 this time last year. The reduction in Connal's stocks is at the rate of a little over 100 tons per day. The home consumption of pig iron, hdSte:its1u:Yíi:ai tained, but the foreign inquiry is backward. Business in finished iron is on a moderate scale, and the works do not obtain anything like full time. Common bars are quoted £ 5 to £ 5 10s, and best bars up to £ 5 17s 6d. Sheets.are in fair reest on tne basis of £ 7 5s for iron singles. 13teel makers aredrregularly employed, some firms ?iugbusy, while others are slack, and two or three ?re practically idle. Steel prices are unchanged. oal is quiet and cheaper. TRADE OF CARDIFF. EXCHANGE, Friday. The steam coal market was unchanged to-i?y, the demand for all qualities being as brisk as ever.
