I MARKETS. I LIVERPOOL PROVISION MAKKICT. "I LITKHPOOL, Saturday. Bacon: The market allows very little Improve- ment, notwithstanding a small receipt of bogs nnd an ndrance in value of light weights, and the Cincinnati Prices Current's statement that Itrger supplies are not likely for some time, the consumptive demand continuing to be slow. No change is made in quotations generally, but holder- are not standing out for extreme prices. Shoulders are also quiet. without material change in value. Uims participate in the general dull- ness, and while quotations remain unaltered it would not be difficult to purchase at less money. Lard on spot is slightly atteiier, but with a very restricted business. Futures are nominal, being unquoted and neglected. American refined is quiet ai recent rates, Choe«e is steady, wiih an improvemunt in the demand, which, however, runs principally on graceshelow finest. American butier is featureless. Eggs are in good demand, which is freely met without change in values. Beef and pork are firm but quiet at unchanged prices. IBILLIARDS.
BILLIARDS. I ROBERTS AND PEALL FOR £400. Exceedingly interesting were Friday afternoon's stages of the billiard match at the Egyptian-hall, Piccadilly, London. Another big crowd witnessed the play, which at the outset looked likely to be &HinftvourofFeat!.MWpHdidheper- form. Robert', who allows 9,000 points start in a game of 24,000, commenced the day's pro- ceedings, with about 300 points the best of the handicap, ti.e totals b,,ing :-Peal[, 21,047; Roberta, 19,827. As matters turned out, the positions under- wont very little alteration, as Roberta compiled 963 to Peall'a 613. The latter, on the first occe- sion of going to the table, made a very fine break of 334, which ia the higheat scored by him duiing the match, and which aoiualiy gave bim the best of matters. Subsequently Peall, who had lliirteen other innings, could only make breaks of 90 and 64 Roberts, on the contrary, made breaks of 154, 250, 119, 104, and 273 (with nurseries of ee and 33 cannous). The totals when an adjournment was made werePeall, 21,660; Roberta (in play). 20.793. There was a crowded house in the even- ing, nnd the play was of fairly good quality. The game proceeded evenly, and Roberts thus main- tained his advantage. The champion made as his chief breaks 110, 56,288,99. 69, 152. 214. and 160 unfinished, while Peall'. best efforts were 68, 150, 45, 35, 42, 58, 187, and 76. Scores at close :— Peall, 22,409; ROLertl. 22,000. The 24,000 up spot-barred match, in which J. Roberts conceded W. J. Peall 9 000 starts for a stake of;e2OO a side, which had been attracting crowds of spectators to the Egyptian-hall, Piccadilly, during the preceding fortnight, was concluded on Saturday night, when the building was again packed in every part. Almost from the commencement of tile contest the scoring was relatively of a most even character, Roberta usually leaving off at the end of each days play with a slight advautage oa the handicap. Peall commenced the laat week's play 717 points behind his handicap, but on Friday, wben he made a break of 334, his higheat during the match, he succeeded in obtaining a momentary lead, though at the olose of the day Roberts again bad the best of the :politlons, the scores being:—Peall, 22,409, Roberts, 22.000, so that the former was 341 behind his points. Resuming play on Saturday afternoon Roberta iuoreased his un- finished break of 160 of the previous night to 198, and with runs of 42, 75,55, and 203, gained steadily, reaching 22.456 to the 22,573 of Peall, whose onryl, innings of any note bad been 92. At tble point thl leader rallied a little, and made a carefully-played 133, but then fell away again diiectly afterwards, and Roberts with 33,30,133,31. and 150 passed to the front at 22,778. and when the oonteatants ad j eurned to the evening the ngurM *nd as follows :-Roberts, 22,924; :f' 22,168 There was another crowded houss at night, when even the eaiigway4 were crowded with vicars resdy to pay anything far! the privilege of standing to witness the finish. Against Roberts's best runl of 5b and 54, tbe younger man put together 47, 54, 34.128, and 72. At this stage the game underwent a remarkable ci?nge, end, before anybody could :f:,ka: I fact, Roberts had placed the issue beyond doubt. Recovering his furm, he in succession made breaks of 108. 232. and 272, Pe?t in the meanthne ,corln" loo? than twenty PointL Then* fine efforts prac- r::IaIn:r..p:'on of winning, and Roberta uhimltølv obtained his success by 635 points. I A SENSATIONAL PICTURE.
A SENSATIONAL PICTURE. The large painting by the Spanish artist Falsro, which is about to be exhibited in Cardiff, is cer- tainly a striking picture. It ia a highly Imagina- tive and weird conception, called The Night- mare," and the subject has been dealt with in the spirit characteristic of that great artist, who is so well known for his exquisite, though eccentric, paintings. This picture, which it of very latge dimensions, covering 120 square feet of canvaa, has never before been exhibited pubMcty, Md it it owing to the anorprise of a local A'm that the people of Cardiff will have eot?y opportunity of inspecting Lhil great wo? of art

SOUTH WALES TUAOE. CARDIFF. Saturday. Coal shipments for Cardiff fo ?the %ek l^'ng WedD8.duf lat amounted to only 2M.699 tou? against 265.865 tons exported in the prece.hne six days. The htting off in shipments Is attrihut?bb mainly to a restricted output occasioned by the observance in the beginning of the week of the colliers' monthly holiday. As regards the steam coal trade an average business has been done, but, thesalea effected have been, as a rule, for prompt or early shipment. Prices have undergone no material alteration, but the market is unsettled owing to the limited inquiry for forward ship- ments. The fine spring weather whici prevails It" weakened the market for house coal, but as yet quotations are nominally unchanged. Pitwood importers have recently experienced a flat market, butTas stocks are now decressing the outlook in this trade is beginning to wear a brighter aspect Welsh cokes are in poor request, and so long as the depression continues in the iron and stesi trades r.o material improvement Is probable. f'Uam Ctal—There was an xTe?KedemMdfor steam coal to-day at. the fonuwine prieea :—Best qualities 9s 6d to 9s 9 i, seconds Bs 9d to 9s 3.1, in. SWANSEA. SWANSEA, Saturday. Duri. ng the past week the coal and patent fuel trades have been very quiet, and the total for the week shows a large falling off compared with the previous week, and also as against the correspond- ing week of last year. The prospects, however, [or next week are improved by the arrival of a much larger quantity of tonnage than for some time past, including two large Sailing ships to load anthracite for Ban Francisco. The clearances of tin-plate for the United States have been limited to the Merrimac, but the shipments total nearly 100,000 boxes, the A. J. Balfour and Bidar biiing in course of loading. There is an increased demand for tiu-plates, and soiiio Blight increase in prices. The proapects that the trade will, before long, have resumed its nOllDal activity are improving each week.
