LOCAL FINANCE. I
LOCAL FINANCE. I [BY OUR FINANCIAL EDITORl I CARDIFF, SATURDAY. There has been scarcely any ousiness done to- day, and price3, with one or two exceptions, ivmaiu unchanged. Taff Vale Divided Stock is s ill firm, and, whatever the dividend may turn out to be, it is pretty certain that the stock has retched its lowest price. Judging oy some other railway securities, Taffs are certainty not too high. L'he Manchester and Sheffield directors, for instance, have asnounced P. dividend at the rate .f i per cent., but this had no effect upon the mice, which stinds at 84. Surely, in comparison the Taff Valo Divided Stock, which, at any rate, lN ill pay 2 per cent., is worth as much. The stock is in strong request at the advanced price. Khondda and Swansea Bay Shares are firm without any improvement, but a number of 11 ausactions have taken place recently in deben. tu i-e allotments at 8 tnd 81 prem. Bute Dock Debentures have been again done at 110:. North's Collieries have changed hands at 4 13-16. South Wales Union Bank Shares are inquired for on account of the improved dividend, but very few parcels are coming in. In our notice of the report of the dividend of the London and Pro- vincial Bank we mis-stated the reserve fund. II now stands at £400,000, and not at E101,250. It a copy of the report had been sent to us the mis- take. in all probability, would not have occurred. A meeting of Stevens and Son (Limited), wine and spirit merchants, was held to-day, when it was decided to pay a dividend at the rate of 10 percent. The sum of X400 will be added to the roseive and R300 will be carried forward. The statement of accounts when it is sent out will, we are sure, give satisfaction to the shareholders. The business is not one in which a large reserve fund is necessary. A brewery company needs a large sum upon which it can draw for the renewal of puolic-house leases or the purchase of new houses, but there are no such calls in the case of wine and spirit merchants' businesses. In I;ai)-plall this week there are a couple of notes in which the enterprise of Cardiff is compared with the want of that quality which exists at Liverpool. After stating that the Liverpool Dock Board is behind the times, and that the arrange ments for landing passengers are a disgrace to &1t"I' port, the writer says Look at Cardiff and at Barry, where private enterprise builds dock after dock in anticipation even of the'demand, only to see the docks filled as fast as they are built." The enterprise which has been shown in Cardiff has staggered some of the older ports, and although at the present time the docks are not all filled—Penarth having done very badly this week—the time is not very far off when the accommodation which now exists will be iD- sufficient for the trade. The only new local company which has been registered this week to which we have not already referred is the E. S. Lancaster Steamship Com- pany (Limited). This company is formed to pur- chase and work the E. S. Lancaster. The capital is 911,840, in 64 shares of JE185 each. According to Stubbs' Weekly Gazette, in the week ending July 12 there were 168 bills of a-tie regis- tered in England and Wales, an increase of 7 as compared With the corresponding period last year. The receiving orders gazetted number 77, show- ing a decrease of 21, and the number of registered deeds of arrangement was 58, a decrease of 1, The totals for the portion of the year to July 12 are bills of sale registered for England and Wales 4,660, a decrease of 667; the receiving orders gazetted number 2,272,'a decrease of 266, and the registered deeds of arrangement 1,928, a decrease ,,f 44. The number of failures in England and Wales gazetted during the week ending Jult 12 was 135. The number in the corresponding week of last year was 157, showing a decrease of 22. The number of bills of sales registered at the Queen's Bench for the week ending July 12 was 168. The number in the corresponding week of lastvear W:19 161, and in the corresponding weeks for the three previous years was 224,222, and 213. LOCAL STOCKS AND SHARES. Piercy and Loiigbottom*s lievort.)-I'Iie cold. ungenial weather of the past week has seriously checked the growth of the bine in the bop plantations in this district. Vermin also, so all planters at "ur market, to-day report, has increased alarmingly within the last few days, and the present outlook is most serious for both growers and consumers alike. What is wanted is hot, dry sunshine, which does not come, the sun being conspicuous by his absence so far this summer. There is not much trade passing, consequent on the advance in prices, and almost total clearance of the 1889 crop, but there is more inquiry for older hops at considerably improved prices. FINANCIAL NEWS I [FROM THE EXI FIAXGE TELEGRAPH CO.] I LONDON. SATL'KDAY EVENING. At the cnnnipno ment of (airiness money was in go >d request at 41 per cent. for day to day advances, but later in t!;o ilay lenders had <t diffi- culty in placing l'">tns even at 2.j per cent. Tiio Discount M irket presented n quiet appear- ance, aud the volume cf business done was about the usual amount, but was done in three months' paper under 4.J par cent. A limited number of transactions were done at the Hank of England in discounts, but no fresh borrowings were reemled. stiiii of Xii,ooo it, Spanish coin was sent in to the Rank. With respect to the rumour of gold coming from Paris, it is now reported that the amount will not exceed flOO.OCO and that some of it is coming to pay for stocks recently purchased. The impression is gainini; gruund that the settlement which begins on Monday will be arranged with much greater easj than was expected at one time. The bank, will, ask 5 per cent, for their loans ti the Stock Exchange, but as there is not likely ti be any hck of capital, thiq rate will most likely be the maximum. The account open for the rise Ins been considerably curtailed, and as there are still accounts open foi the fall in some departments, better prices art looked for atter the settlement, for, apart from tlit crisis in the Kivor I'late, there is nothing at present on the horizon to causo depression in the markets. The Railway Rolling Stock Improvements Com- pany (Limited) has been formed for the purpose of acquiring and working certaiu patents granted to Mr. D. Macnee, M.Inst.C.E., 10.» an improve- ment in axle boxes for railway rolling stock. In this purchase will be included the benefit of all future improvements which Mr. Macnee may make oil the invention or of which ho mny become possessed during the terms for which the letters patent are granted. The other objects of the company tiro to manufacture and deal in patented improvements in rolling stock of all kinds and generally for thl) purpoges set out in tho compauy's memorandum of association. Among the great advantages of Mr. Macnee's patent tire its cheapness, the saving in the cost of manufacture and con- sumption of oil, and the prevention of heated jotii-iiiiisttiiki axles resulting from friction. The reports which tho directors havo received on the patent from eminent engineers are very satisfac- tory. The directors believe they are justified in ing that upon twenty raitwayain Great Britain iloue upwards of 14,000 tenders, 42,000 carriages, and 460,000 trucks are in use, and supposing that Macnee's patent were adopted only to the xtent of 10 per cent, on these railways, a return of £ 70,000, exceeding tho amount of the cjpital of the undertaking would be shown. The capital is £ 140,000 in 28,000 shares ot X5 each. The list will opon on Monday, July 14, and close, both for town and country, on Thursday next, July 17. 'IIhe first batch cf letters of allotment in the London and Suburban Co-operative Stores (Limited) have been posted.
