"THE SQUIRREL'S KINGDOM."
"THE SQUIRREL'S KINGDOM." From the London Music Publishing Coinpanv, 54, Great Mariborough-«r.reet,W.,we have received a song beating the above title. The words, by Dolla Carlton,if looked upou,ns deubtless tttey should btvs mythic, are well-conceived, though one cannot but smile at the idea of a tquirrel musing with thoughtful brow and shedding "sweet tears of j'y and pain" nt something he, and he alone, saw between the leaves of the branches where he muded. Rut still, remembering that "The Squirrel's Kingdom" is a mythical conception, it. furnishes the musician with in interesting libretto-a luxurydenied the majority of com- posers. Nicola Cuviello has succeeded in wed. ding tn the poem music peculiarly reflec- tive of the words,-the all-important element of vocal composition. There are several progressions not good, such as skips of major sevenths aDd other defects, whilst the composer has not altogether escaped the impressions left on his mind of other popular songs. But the greater portion of the composition is unquestionably good, and marks the author as the possessor of pertect musical feeling, for, although the defects noticed may be against the laws of good writing, It does nor, follow that they render the song any the less effective. Indeed, the uninltlaled in the art would probably consider them good points. The song is in O, and has a compass from D to G, being, therefore, suitible for mezzo-soprano or tenor, lis price Is 2s. It is strongly recom- mended.
