I THE SHRFEVALTY OF BRECON-1 SHIRE. I COMPUMENTARY DI-MON'STRATIOX AT Bi ECO.N. ENTH L'SIASTIC K EC l^PTfOX OF MR W, T, LEWIS. I [Hv Mouikv.] BRECON, Tuksday Aftersoov. This town is to-U.iy the pcene of a remnrkiible :ltll<'1 in¡:, to do honour to Nlr. William Thomn* Lewis, :ll;¡rdy. Aber.iitte, High Sheriff of Btecou- shiro. People of all shades of politics and of all social nnd thenlogkal views fire here; in shcrr, all luve sunk for i!io in->mont their petty diffe- rences, r.nd lure united in one great common brotherhood t" show tlieir esteem for the hi!:h clmntcter and appreciation of the servicts Mr. William Thotivis Lewis has rendered to the com- munity of South Wuta. At 10 30 a.m th Mt ithvr platform WH crowded with ueiple di-es?e 1 in Ipll attire, and sporting noseg.ijs in their button holes waiting for tho BivCoii train, which, as soon as it steamed into the station, was crowded with con. siderably over 400 gentlemen l>11 the same purpose b"n f. Tho Ji)n; train, decked with fligs soon moved out of thy !atiol1, conveying peoplu on an t;nunll wiich was entirely new, as far as 1 mu awar-4, in the unnali of Soutit wale" viz., .cqrlhg a l'nuinè son of tho peopLe-the archi- Icet of his own reputation and fortt1ne- while proceeding to the Shire-half, Brecon, t" ally assume tile funetiqns of High Sheriff for ih- vim1 y. Itu romantic green scenery through which tho long train passed w.uj such that one is tempted to ende ivour to depcribe it. Suffice, i w- ever, on thn OCC"'lQn t" say that the hill. land vulley n seemed to have arrayed thlD- el\i in tlieiv charming roues to commemorate tho event w" wero journeying to celebrate. It W¡l a pr."ces.iiol1 iu honour of what Ind, lh, highest dignity to K".va!ty Hlf-namcJ> private worth and services rendered to tho masses of the I PUQPl\ I would not he *uying th., wh()11I truth were I tn omit the statement t I;at nationality had also something to do with thn demonstration. Ah felt proud of the Welshman whoso wonderful career seemed to be on this occasion crowned with the ap proval of the Sovereign who lull "¡¡pointeù him to the proud position of High Sheriff of Brecon- shire. Our gaily-decked en* nc rushed into Brecon Station at middiy. The weather, which had been threatening all the worning, had by this time cleared up, and the sua now shone brilliantly. As the visitors poured out of tho station, all tlw windows of the adj icent houses were ciowded with ladies dressed in tasteful summer costume. Aft"r forming in procession, tin* visitors, preceded by Superintendent Flye and a b>dy of oflkvrs, who acted as javelin I1IOD, walked to the Castle Ifo'el. tiere it splendid carriage, drawn by a pit. of magnificent greys, receive 1 tin High Sheriff, who wusattireJ in tlw\\ïnd"Jr uniform. lie wasaccom- pauied bf Sir George Kliiot, Bart-» M.P. As the High Sheriff stepped alone up the m issive steps of the hllllth" trumpeters blew fanfare ou tlu ir silver trumpets. Mr, Lewis was fvlluwcJ into tho hall by SirUeor^e Uiiot, Bart., M.l\, unJ tha rr5t ot thE: ,.j;;Jtor". "vme time was spent before all the visitors could find places in tho hall. By-and bye Mr. Kees H. H¡¡lt Plus >*ewydJ, Aberdare, took the dlcur, having on his right the Hiyh Sheriff and on his left Sir Ueo. Kliiot, Bart., M.P., on whu.,) left sat Mrs. Wui. Thos. Lewis and other bdies, The pro- ceedings of the day tlien commenced. The Shire-hall wa* weil filled with people, whoae aDp>eHr.tnce indicated tint they occupied comfort- able circumstances in life. The president had a highly-sympathetic audience, and when ho spoke of Mr, W. T. Lewis's past life and the position he had attained the voice of the Squire 01 Pills Xewydd« whom the public know as a somewhat stern man, trembled with emo'ion, and eventually he broke down completely, being un- uble to rinish a sentence. At this time my eyes fell otllhc features c f a tall-looking gentleman ir u part of the hall npar the reporters' table. Tho tears of pride and joy were careering down his ruddy cheeks. He was h, Lesvis, Abfrdare, the father or the high-sheriff, whom nll had nssdtnbled to honour. To the father the high-sheriff was still his boy-iii-3 noble boy. "One touch of nature makes the whole world kin," and within the range of my vision I observed many eyes dw-np at this uotnont with tlie dew of the heart. 1 afterwards found an opportunity to grasp the proud father's hand, and to most heartily congratulate him upon having lived to "eo one of hi. sons tho Itigh-sholiff of tb county or ilryehsin Brycheiniog. Tho address, which was most beautifully illu- minated, wag admirably read by Mr, Jones, assi.itiint-ov?r?eer, Merthyr. Then tho high-sheriff stood up to ,ply. Frequently iu,ing its delivery the scen and its Bignifi'nc.e were too much for the high-sheriff, and he repNtedly had great difficulty to master his emotion, Sir George followed, and both ho and the president referred warmly tl) Mrs. L9Wi. who sat near, as being a lady whose home influence was such as to make Mr. Lewis very happy, and strengthened by that happiness he fought the battles of life success* fully. It was a glorious public recognition to the worth of a noble woman. 41 Well done, noble daughter of Gower" was the sentiment of all pre- sent as they observed her somewhat pale features. The testimony to her worth was doubtleastho echo of the well-known sentiments of her husband on the subject. After tho proceedings here were over the audience left the hall, and, ro-forming in the street, tho procession escorted the high-sheriff's car- riage, which now contained, in addition to Ir, Lewis, Sir Geo. Elliot and lr, Hhys, to the Shire- hall, which had been ricldy prepared for the reception ol the company. At the top of the hall the most distinguished of the visitors took their seats at a raised tablo, the high-sheriff being in the centre. Here sat, among others, Sir George Elliot, Itart., M.P., Sir John Jones Jenkins, !\I,P Ir, f;,Jwa,d \illi-lms (fidlIesu.)rough), Mr, Khys (PLis Xewydd), and others. The hall not being able to accommodate all tho company, another luncheon came olT at the Wellington Hotel. ISoth luncheons were served in such a inmneras to give great satisfaction. The speeches delivered here ?Wl be reported d'"wher, and, d?liv?rd by tlw grl\nd of MIok> Morganwg," seemed to touch ? ieply "mp"ti,?tic chord i. the audience. To the fancy of soma of us pre- sent, the shade of old *4 1010" seemed to hover about tho head of the grandson, for it is it prouder thing to have the blood of 44 Jt)lol()r,nwg!1 in one':i veins thau to be endowed with the blood of along line of kings aod queens. At any rate, such is the opinion of the writer. In the evening two ordinaries woi» given-one atrheCastie Hotel and the other at the<»eorge Hotel. The attendance was very largo at both ptuce*. At tho former tho ILj«h Sheriff presided, and lit the latter Major Lewis Aberuar*. 1 should not close without st-uing that much of the success of the day's proceedings wn.1 due to the active assistance of Mr. D. The only reform that I should like to see would ba that all expenses con. nected with the shrievalty-tliat is with county work-should be bcrne by the public and not by the gentleman who is appointed. SPEECH BT MR. W, T. LEWIS, lr, LEWIS, on rising to reply, was enthusias- tically received. lIe said: Gentlemen,—The flat- tering address contained in the highly-artistic album which my friend Mr. Rhys has been good enough to present on your behalf imposes upon me a duty which I regret to say I am utterly unequal to perform. While I have many timna, in various ways, been beset with difficulties, I have rarely felt so unequal to any task as at the present moment, through my inability to give expression to my feelings, not only with respect to the com- pliment that has jus' been paid to me. but more especially the practical proof given by so many gentlemen of their goodwhi by taking the trouble to attend here to-day. (Cheers.) Most of you are aware that I have had but very little expe- rience in public speaking, and, therefore, I hope you will forgive the inadequacy of expression on the present occasion, under which, I am certain, even a practised speaker would find it no easy task, if he felt us I do, not only your great kindness, but w"}ro also so cognizant as I must be of my shortcomings, compared with the eulogiums set forth in the address, its to the part I have taken in the several matters therein re- ferred to. It cannot be otherwise than grati- fying for a man to learn that the manner in which ho has performed his duties, many of which have often beeu difficult, has met with the approval of parties specially affected thereby. (Cheers.) And with regard to the sub- ject alluded to in the address, which may ù, termed as extraneous to my regular duties, i.e., the question ?f wages and other matters uez.tnining thereto b?twe?. the employers ni emplo y ed, I :I';d:¡t 'III:eatnh,tt;; never identified myself with any work that more thoroughly brought its own toward th in by the greatly improved feeling created by the represen- tative meetings of employers and employed during the last ten or twelve years. (Applause.) And it is peculiarly gratifying that the time and trouble so devoted for many years, in concert with my late friend Mr. Menelaus and others, has resulted in so largely benefitting tho district in which all of us are so deeply interested-by not only putting an end to strikes and wrangling, with tireir consequent losses, but creating so much mutual confidence be. tween the several interests concerned, and last, though not least, securing the co-operation and practical sympathy of the landlords and the colliery owners, with the view of assisting such colliers as will help themselves in providing for th" suffevers from accidents, (Applause.) While i am, of course, aware that 1 am indebted 10 my appointment, to the ancient office which I have at present the honour of holding in this county for your congratulations* I hope I may be pardoned for saying that I cannot feel otherwise th, n proud 01 thegreat interest taken, as well as the personal kind- ness displayed, and the mode in which my friends ;;iive availed themselves 01 the opportunity of ex- pressing their approval of my past career—as re- corded in the album—and which demands my sincere thanks. It will not only be a sourco of pleasure to me in the future, but will also be an incentive to further efforts on my part, so as to continue to enjoy your c>teern-(:1pplnu,")-while "I the same thOU endeavouring 1. ct up to my mto of G?., a ddriit d.i ddel." :ita OEO. Ho had listened with the greatest respect to the Address which had been so carefully prepared, and having had the j acquaintance of his excellent friend tho sheriff for I nearly twenty years, and having had a most par- ticular and intimate acquaintance with him during the most useful part 01 his life, he could, of his own knowledge and experience, bear testi. inony almost to the letter to what they had said in the address. (Loud cheers.) A id the chief part of it was the wonderful great work which Mr. Lewis had done alreadf. Their friend the sheriff had not >et scarcely attained to what hu caUellthe longest day, ov had not attained to his full life of usefulness. He had also the pleasure of knowing his excellent wile and family. iClieers.j Mr, Lewis had the peculiar way, the faculty, of making human life happy—(applause; —winch was 0"" of the secctE4 of life, (COD' I in u,d "Pvlius".) The proceedings th3P terminated. LtNCHEO.S Ai: THE TOWN-HALL. I On the conclusion of the proceedings, Mr. Lewis invited the company to the Town h ill, where Miss EvaDs, of the Wellington, had laid a fim-class luncheon. Those who were unable to find seats were accommodated at the Wellington. Mr, Lewis occupied the chair, and was supported on his right by Mr. R. U. Hliyo, Mr. H.Lewis, Mr. K. Capper, 1r. K. Cory, and others; and on the left by Sir George Elliot, M.P.,Sir John Jones Jenkins, M.P., Mr. E. Williams (Middlesborough), Mr. James Lewis (Plasdraw, Aberdare), and others. The *4 Health of the Queen" having been duly honoured, Mr. EDWARD Williams, Middlesborough, whose rising was loudly applauded, said it would be very improper if they left the room without drinking, and drinking very heartily, the toast which had b- en confided to him. fio more pleasant duty could have fallen upon him than to propose the toast. He was sure they would receive it as kindly uni heartily as he presented it to them, which was the health and success of their good and dis- tinguished friend the High Sheriff. (Great cheer. ing.) Williams, both of whom responded. 'Ihe former said he had seen Mr. Lewis grow up i^ rom a young man, and watched his useful life with interest. Mr. Lewis had done a great deal lor others, aud he ^Sir George Elliot) could vouch for everything tliat had been said of him. (Applause.) Sir J. J. Jenkins, M.P., was called upon to nnke a few remarks before the proceedings terminated. Ho said lie did not intend to speak, out simply w show his regard and esteem for his friend Mr. IV, T. Lewis. (Applause.) The company then adjourned. THE CASTLE HOTEL BAXQCET. At six o'clock in the evening LI banquet was held at the Castle Hotel. The High Sheriff occu- pied the chair, and amongst thoso present were Sir George Elliot, M.P., the Hon. Arthur Morgan, Mr. Howel Gwyn, and others. The toasts of "Tho Queen "and "The Prince and Princess of Wales" were proposed from the chair and duly responded to. Mr, Howel GWYN proposed "The Bishops and Cleroy," which was responded to by the Rev. Herbert Williams, the Rev. R. 13, Jenkins, and the Kev. Father Richardson. Mr. Jamks Lewis (Plisdraw, Aberdare), who was loudly cheered, next gave "The Army, Navy, and Auxiliary Forces." In concluding, the speaker said thllt this might be his only opportunity of offering his sincere congratulations to the High- Sheriff of this county upon the splendid ovation he had received, and deservedly received, on that occasion. He could say that nothing probably would sink deeper into one's heart than that he was accompanied by the friends of his own neigh- bourhood. (Applause.) Colonel Jon S3 Thomas responded for the Army, and C-OiOnel CONWAY LOYD for the Auxiliary Forces. Sir Ghoroe Elliot briefly proposed "The Health of Ir, W. T, Lcwis," which was drunk with enthusiasm, and responded to in the same brief manner by Mr. Lewis. The Hon. Arthuk Morgan proposed "The Health of the Lord Lieutenant," which was duly honoured. =Mr, Edward Williams (Middlesborough) pro- posed ''The Health of the Borough and County Members." Mr. A. r, Listok, in proposing" Her Majesty's Judges," said he could not but express the sorrow of many of the fripnds of the high-sheriff in not having the opportunity of meeting her Maj^siv's judge, and showing liis lordship the high sense and appreciation felt by all in the counties of Brecon and Glamorgan for the present high-sheriff. Ho had no doubt Justice Stephen had been detained elsewhere on duly, but he (the spaker) hoped and trusted that in the morning his lordship would learn of the demonstration of that day, and that the gentlemen who had met to do honour to the high-sheriff had also the same intent to do honour to her Majesty's judges. (Applause.) The toast was tuist cordially received. The health of "The Magistrates or the County of Hrccon was proposed by Mr. R. H. Ruys. Mr, Howel Gwyn responded. Mr. Walteu Smythe (Merthyr) proposed" He Health of the Mayor and Corporation of Brecon," which was responded to by Alderman De Wlsros, Colonel Conway Lloyd proposed" The Visitors," to which Sir George Elliot, Mr. David JameA, and Mr. Thomas Jenkins, Dowlais, responded. THE RECENT VOLC.NTEEK DINNER…
THE RECENT VOLC.NTEEK DINNER AT CAKUIFF, TO THE EDITOR OF THE W.i9TRBS liAlL." Sir,—Captain Aitken very considerately gave a dinner to tho Cardi:f detachment of the 2nd Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers on Saturday last. I am sorry to say that tho good effect of the gat hering was marred by a series of misstatements which, however flattering they may have been to Captain Aituen, were not at all ompjimentary to other officers who have really borne the bent and burden of the day. 1 have not tiine to traverse all that was said by the various speakers, but I will refer more particularly to the utterances of Major Glendonwyn, a gen- tleman who ought to hive known what he was talking about. He is reported to have said that when he first came among them as adjutant the corps, then the 10th Rifles, was in a very low state. He set to work steadily and earnestly. It was an uphill struggle for a time, but they had gone on processing," Af. I, for one, should like to hear it publicly stated what were the real senti- ments of the major towards our old 16th, and 1 also wish to say that, however much" piogress 11 has been CURÙ" during the captaincy of Mr, Aitken, the fact remaills that thre weru more men jn tlie corl-" ut the former pedod refrred to than now, and there are now only four officers, although there ought to be ten. Then, Major Glendonwyn said—"Captain Aitken took upon himself the com- mand of the detachment whn very few persons would ha8 undertaken the responsibility." Very kind of the captain, no doubt! But would it not have been more correct to sav that he took command simply in order of seniority on the resignation of his superior officer? Again, it was said, lie had endeavoured to infuse new life and vigour into it," &c. Was this v.ccowpti8hd by loeans of toe six months' leave of absence which Captain Aitken recently enjoyed? I will not trouble you further. sir, except toaskwhettior tlie captain's own statement, that when he took charge of the detachment its debts amounted to between X700 and £800/ would have been nearer the mark if he had mentioned 450D -I am, &c. July 21. A CARDIFF VOLUNTEER. TO THE EDITOR OK IHE WTRR. MAIL." :5IR,-l liave just read a very flowery account of the dinner given to us volunteers, in a veracious contemporary of yours. It is quite true that the officers' table was profusely decorated, and if I could judge by the savoury smells that emanated from it, and from what i could see of fruits, wine bottles, &c., I have no doubt but that those who sat at that table had a most elaborate repast. But what ILbout the r/lok and Well, 1 will tell you. We, the rank and Je, had, so far as the good things were concer ned, to content ourselves wit!; seeing and smelling mem. At ooosiderable inconvenience I managed to get to the Town-hall at five o'clock on Saturday, as it w? arranged that we should march from there to the ill-liall, where we were invited bv circular to dine with our commanding officer. How it oould be considered dining with him when his table wa- te!U3ved to a distance from ours, and the provision was of a totally different and superiorcharncter, 1..111 quite at a Joss to undersiand. Further, his table was served a considerllble time boforo ours. Theprovi- sion for the rank and file tables was beef, mutton, and veal, with 80me very modernw pastry. I can speak for myself and several othors of the invited that we considered it II slight, and almost an insult, to be treated as inferiors and us not fit to sit at the same table as the ot!icer8, &c,. and had I not been restrained by thedishke oi creating a scene I should havo spoken my mind and left the room. The far. ut the raised Llblo that was re. moved 1\ distance from us was, most likely, very good but i assure you that I could get a better dinner at the Washington for a shilling than the one we had. 1 should have thought and said nothing ubout an indifferent ohmer had it not been for the invidious dl8tinction made between us, the rank and file, and other visitors who might be supposed to be of a higher grade in society. It ii true some of the leavings from the upper table were handed round to U8 after tho gentlemen IsrlV ll!) had done with them, notably tlw anchov y sauce which was servtd to us t.t¡; the :,oKcI:S served to Cardiff.
