MEDIEVAL MILITARY ARCHITEC-1…
MEDIEVAL MILITARY ARCHITEC-1 TURP, IN EN(iLAND.* [SECOND NOTICE.] Interesting luaUdial in abundance might be found in this work for a notice extended far beyond the limits we have prescribed for ourselves. The great border fortress of Alnwick, the grand structure at Arundel, justly described by Mr. Clark as one of the foremost works of Mediaeval military architecture in England; Uarnard, with its rare hi,toric,¡1 allSociations, Bed- ford, Berkeley, Pootefract, Ludlow (noted for, the production of Milton's "Comus"). Conisborough, Warwick, yea, Hoyal Windsor itself, must be passed by without more than the merest mention. As previously intimated we must con. tine ourselves to tho castles of Wales and the border counties, and even of these we can only find apace for a few words its to the principal of theio. Dealing with North Wales first we take Ukaumakis Castlr, in Anglesey, "an example of a purely concentric fortress, in which the engineer was left free to design his works without being governed by tl.. )f the ground." A fine structure this, with a quadrangle 50 I ;,7:d..t: :tain:th wthuatrte B3 ini??iv(? curtain w:LlIs, having altogether twelve towers ut the angles, with inteimediate towers, half round, with prolonged sidey, on the east and west walls. Not tho least notice- j able of the internal works is a beautiful little chapel of two bays, with polygona) apse, J groined, aud with w;tll? panelled in two .tage all round. The gate house i" a fine piece of work, I the outer gate well protected, opening upon the seashore. The period of its erection is fixed about 1295, twelve years after the execution of Prince David. With the subjugation of Wales, its stmte. getie and general importance ceased. The accom- panying ground plan and bird's eye view of the building from its south-eastern angle give material help to a proper understanding of the verbal des- cription. Conway Castle is in roduced to us with the town of the same name as forming together" the most complete and the best preserved example of Medieval military architecture in Britain." The castle occupies the apex of the triangular promontory upon which the town is built. The curtain wall encircling the town is protected by 28 towers. Intended as a tete-du'pont to cover the passage j of tloop, across tho water, the site appears to have been selected, and the structure built, by a perfect master of military engineering. A room in the northeastern tower in the inner i ward is said to have been occupied bv Kleanor, the Queen of Edward I., who spent a Christmas at the cattle in great State. Mr. Clark thinks the budding was bc^un in 1285. The Parliamentary General Myt.ton etormeù the town and took the castle in 1646. Charles II. g,,?e tho castlo to ihdward, lust Earl of Conway, who was tnean enough to dismautle iI, to carry away its lead and tittibi r-work, break down tho well-stairs, and do all the damage ho could out of pure spite to some of the neighbouring gentry-a scoundrel trick for ever those scoundrel t'mes. The descriptions, plars, and views of this building are of marked excellence. Willi regard to Cauvakton, clilbt ot the three military works of the First Edward, Mr. Clark tells us there ia no "castle in Britain laid out with greater uniformity of deign, n< r one in which the resources of the military engineer are more skilfully set forth." Its waifs a'O a mere artificial continuation of the ridge of nek, standing a few fect abuve the level of the town, on which they are built. The King's Gate- house, Prison Tower, Queen's Gate, the Well, Dungeon, Eagle, Black, and Granary towers lire the most vtnmrkable portions of the structure internally. The building was begun in 1283, simul- taneously with Conway, Cricciaeth, and Harlech. Its completion did not take place until nearly years Ui-jr. Owain Glyndwr took town and castlo once, und both were alternately in possession of loyalist and Houndhead during the Civil War. Most people remember the story which connects the birth of the tirst Prince of Wales with this c.istle. On the eve of that interesting event Edward Longshanks, politic as he was brave, hurried up his Queen from her English home, and, at a conference shori ly aftorwards held with tho Welsh chiefs at Khuddlan, obtained their prùmiso of obedience to a native prince who had done them no wrong and who could not. speak one single word of English. The astute monarch thereupon pro- duced his heir, born a few days previously at Car- narvon. Whether the Welsh chieftains were angry or amused history sayeth not; possibly both. UAbLF>cR Castle. on the coast of Merioneth, commands a view in. cluding Carnarvon liar. Snowdon, Carn Madi-yn, C'arn Bodfuan,Yr Kid, Aberdaron Bay,and Bardsey Sound and island, undoubtedly one of the finest in Britain. The castle is an excellent example 01 tho concentric or Edwardian order, and is com- posed of a central four-sided ward within four curtains, capped at each angle by a tlvuiii-tower of thiv;e-quaiter projection. The great gate- tVH1!U i9 in t Is. centre of the land ward or eastern side, and opposite are the remains "Î tho hall and domestic IouiltJi"g., contiguous, on the north side, being the chapel. Harlech closely resembles Caerphilly in tho plan of the interior and middle wards. The castle was long used as a Court of Assize, a prison, and for the lodgings of tho judges. Mr, Gink assigns its foundation to Ilw year 1280, although the Welsh claim it to have bepn an older fortress called f?aer (ioit\vyn, from Collwyn ap Tang no, fo>*uit circa 877. Owaln Glyndwr took it in 1404. Thirtv-six years later Margaret of Anjou found shelter in it, th'j south-east tower for "OIlJe time afterwards hearing lwr nam*. In 1463 ho brave and hand- some iWydd ap levan ap Einon, he who had enter- tained Qu"n Margaret there, was besieged in it. His answer to tti,, summons to surrender is well remembered. I held a cistle once in France," he cried, until all the old women of Wales heard of it. 1 shall now hold thi.s one until all the old women of Franco can say tlio same." He gave the place up after a long siege, and on honourable terms, to Sir Uichard Herbert, who commanded for Edward IV. All that is now extant of the castle is th« work of William Fiiz-Alan, who, in 1188, entertained Archbishop Baldwin and his secretory, Gerald of Barry (Giraidus C'ambrensis), there. This must conclude our notice of the castles of North Wales and the English counties bordering thereon. Pro- ceeding southward, we cmt a glance at Builth Castlr, probably an advance post, Mr. Clark thinks, thrown up either during the wars precedent to the making of Offa's Dyke, or to aid the aggres- sions which followed. Builth was in existence its an earthwork when Bernard NewlOurch invaded Brecon at tho end of the eleventh ceuturv. The design of the building is Late Norman, verging upon the Earlv English period. First mention is made of the castlo in 1219, when, by 4 Henry HI., the sheriff of Gloucester is ordered to give immediate aid to Reginald do Braose, the then castellan. In 1200 Llewelyn, who had a few years previously unsuccessfully besieged it, took the castle, and kept possession of it for some time. In a survey made for the Crown, pursuant to 17 Edward II., in 1324, the castle yard and curtilage are said to bo worth 12d. per annum, with 40 acres in demesne of arable land at 3d. per aci-e, and 10 acres of meadow at 12d.; total, 20s. Land was cheaper then than now. The great interest attach. ing to Builth and the neighbourhood centres round Ihe story of the betrayal and death there of Llewelyn, the last Prince of Wales. Bradwvr I Runllt" has become indelibly fixed in the Welsh mind as a designation for ingratitude and treachery of the deepest dye. W.O. built by Gilbert de Clare shortly before 1272, to I guard the Pass of Seughenydd against the forays of Llewelyn. Mr, Clark devotes a separate word to each of the five great parts of the castle itself- namely, the grand front, the horn work, the redoubt, the middle and theinner wards. From tbe description little difficulty is experienced in forming a notion of the former size and splendour of the place. Its presentconditiouisalso very accurately depictured, as we can speak from a personal visit paid only a few days ago We W Jro not able to "view it aright," it bring impossible, as Mr. Clark had ad. vised us, to descend upon it soon after sunrise in autumn from one of the surrounding heights when the grey towers of the castle will be seen rising out of an immense sea of mist," Our journey was made pro, iaically by train just after lunch, and under an almost inconveniently warm SUII, Against the blue air, redolent of the scente of May, the massive towers of the old fortress stood forth clearly as if cut in crystal. Tho deserted quadrangle, thickly carpeted with green, into which the primrose, the daisy, and the buttercup had worked bright patterns in infinite variety, the song of the cuckoo rendered soft as the cooing of a dove by the distance, the idle hum of an occasional bee, seemingly asleep on tho wing, brought eye and oar II sellse of quiet, illde. licious contrast to tiiose wars, and rumours of war, which the lines in the wrinkled frontof thefrowning old fortress seemed eternally proclaiming. Not, as at Balclutha, did the fox look out at us from the windows, but in the cracks of the masonry were forms of vegetation in abundance, and where never yet human hand hud planted it 1"eW an elder tree, attenuated but perfume-laden springing from its brick-sind-moitar well, as from a natural vase. The leaning tower, one of the sights of the place, was not so built, its obliquity being duo to a charge of gunpowder exploded under it in the time of the Commonwealth, on the occasion of the visit of some Parliamentary soldiers, possibly after the famous battlo of St. Fag.in's, fought almost in its immediate neighbourhood. Caerphilly, with its moat and mill, appeurs to have been a fortified town, with tiie castle for elude), rather than a castle simply, pin grand a scale have the works been conceived and carried out. Cardiff Castlr. I according to Mr. Ciark, thoughn ot unknown to border fame, has been the theatre of DO great his- torical event, nor does it possess any very striking peculiarities of position, scenery, or Mxucture." The story of the 28 ytars' incarceration tlterein of Robert, Duke of Normandy, so implicitly credited by the bards of Glamor- gun that they ascribe to him the composi- tion of the well-known "Lament" beginning "I)itr a dyfwys ar y Clawdd," is passed over by Mr. Clark in comparative silence. Formerly a Roman castrum and a hold cf British princes, Cardiff was won in 1090 by Robert Fitzhamon, lord of Glou- cester, who mado it the caput of his soignory of Morgan and Glamorgan. From him it passed to his heiress, Mabel, who married Robert Consul, Earl of Gloucester, bastard son or Henry I., and reputed buildet- of I, pMtauf the cMtte. Thence it passed in succession n. King John ?,I!o when Earl of Moreton, married Isabel, the youngest daughter of William of Gloucester), the Cwres" and other well-known baronial families, being finally sold iDescheat by Edward IV. to William Herbert, first Earl of Pembroke, "in whose heirs, genenol it has since remained." In Elizabeth's time there were three grist mills nnd a tucking mill dependent Upùn the castle, which originally I"d a mill whereat the people 01 Cardiff -ere com- pelled to grind. Mention of tho building is made by Meyric, Leland, and other cariv wriwri. A dt?wing of it may bo found in UNse. The altera- tions and additions effected here since 1775 by Capability" llrwn and others, notwithstanding their many faults of detail, have been, Mr. Clark thinks, decidedly successful. The author's description was drawn up in 1861, since which time, we are told, "the castle has undergone great alterations. Several new towers have been added, and the interior has been com- pletely remodelled. Over tho vault of the base- ment is the library, and above that the hall. The dclnila are in that semi-itafian style in which B." gti was so great a master, and afl that a very renned taste on the part of both owner and archi- tect could devise has been executed in a manner and with a profusion which more than rivals AIii ick." Cardiff was captured, at widely different intervals, by the Welsh leaders Ivor Bach and Owain Glyndwr. A small chapel in the outer ward, wherein Leland saw the lodgings of the twelvo knights of Glamorgan, who held their lands by tenure of castle guard and tax of ward silver, was granted with the parish church of St. Mary by one or the old Norman earls to the monastery at Tewkesbury, and is referred to in the famous Jfonasiicon uf Dugdnle as having been mentioned in 1\ goueral charter of by Nicholas, Bishop uf LlandatT. VrHR Socrn Walks Castles, with which we cannot tind space to deal in detail, are Castell Coch, Coyty, Bronlis-p, Foninon, Kidwelly, Llanquian, Morlais, Penmark, Penrice, Tretower, Blaenllyfni, and Crickhowell, which are neither in themselves of the size, nor in their surroundings nnd history of the ¡II1¡¡orlnnc< of those we have separately noticed. It is the barest justice to Mr. Clark's publishers to say that the. volumes have been handsomely got up,lype, paper, illustrations, and binding everything that, could bo desired. Considering tho number of technical terms nnd proper names employed—Welsli names in particular—the work is also commendably free from errors of the press.

The female plaintiff was arrested at the instigation of Miss Leigh on tho charge cf having stolon the skirt in question. Two police officers entered her house and conveyed her to the lock-up at Tonypandy. There she was lodged in the cells, and she was not rele:i»ed until her husband, who wns in the works at tho time of the arrest, succeeded late at night in tiuding two iiieii willing to bill tier out. Un the following Monday plaintiff was charged at Ystrad Police Court. There the case was adjourned for a week. Meanwhile the friends of the accused proceeded to the Canton Hotel, Cardiff, where the mother and stepfather (Mr. and hirs. This letter was placed before the judge. His Honour, in giving judg- ment, dwelt on the serious nature of the act Mrs. Leigh and Mrs. Lock had committed, and gavo judgment for the full amount claimed, with costs.

CHARGE OF MtUNKhNNESS AGAINST…
CHARGE OF MtUNKhNNESS AGAINST I THE CAPTAIN OF A SWANSEA VESSEL. At the Local Marine Board Offices, Bristol, on Friday (before Mr. J. Edwards, Captain Tozer, and Captain Ryder, with Mr. Press as legal assessor), John Cook was charged that after having signed an agreement 118 master of the British ship Minstrel King, of Swansea, an a vovaul? from London, tIi'l.;wrnligO;: r;8oane back, he was guilty of grom acls of misconduct and drunkennw?), particularlv at Newport, on the 3rd, 6th, and 7th of May, and in consequence of such drunkenness the ship was detained at Newport for two days, and a new master had to be engaged. Mr. E. E. Salmon conducted the case on behalf of the Board of Trade, and Mr. Ciifton appeared for Captain Cook. After hearing the evidence Mr. Clifton said he hud the honour to address the court on behalf of ail good" seaman and as gallant an officer as ever entered Iho Mercantile Marine. The iearued advocate handed in the discharges of Captain Cook from tho year 1863, all iiiarked 11 V. (i. and certifi- cates of character up to the present year, which were of the highest possible description, and there was a letter from the owners of the Minstrel King saying that they offered him ttiki post of captain on Rccouot of his previous career. While Captain Ccok was master of the .Silurian he at great risk rescued the crew of the American vessel Oracle, which was wrecked on Herschell Island, and for this he was presonted by the United States Govern- ment, through the Board of Trade, with a very handsome gold watch, and on a subsequent occa- sion a presentation was made him at Swansea for gallant conduct at sea. Against all this, Mr. Chiton said, was the unhappy circumstance of the Cth of May. All the incidents of Captain Cook's life redounded to his credit, and he would ask the board to come to the conclusion that his conduct in question was more the result of accident than of nyti?ing else.—The Board found Captain Cook guilty of the charge, but, in face of his good con- uct >thl:'7.rsuteIetlu\t ged would be met by suspending hj certificate for Month, lie to be granted a mate's certificate in the wtantime.
