Nowhere, surely, votild religious and wr.tiona,1 sentiment be all interwovtu as in Poland. It is sub- jected to vexatious regulations Mid k-estiietioi,m, ItH bishops and priests are narrow r watched, and the Jesuits are expressly and rigorously excluded. The question of re-union remains to be con- sidered. so far ts anyone can s»r what is really meant by t. Undoubt'dly, .0 Leal tho divisions between the Hoinan and Greek Churulies would be a great gain to Christendom in general, and, apart altogether from lie religious aspect of the question, it would re- dound to the advantage of Russia, since juch ft ..i.t-p would to some extent reconcile the Poles to their yoke. But between the Vatican ai d the Kremlin there yawns a great gulf, nor is it likely to -be bridged over (for a century or certainly years to come. The Russian State has first to overcome ito "deep-rooted prejudices, and would never brook a rival political power. Infallibility and autocracy will hardly luir- monise. The political cauees that contributed to the great IIohiem between East and West have not yet ceased to operate. In short, Hoinan Cathol«ism would have to stem the strong tide of Nationalism now rising in It i* but a few months since Leo. XIII. made overtures to the Greek Communion, and that Church has sent a courteous, but digniiied, reply. The document containing it oannot fail to interest English Churchmen, inasmuch as it rvments very fairly mr own position. It begins by CTUSisseing *> haeritst» desTrc fr the "in$ ob f y Chr g:sit tl,e. tra,es the onuses of the rift botween them, and subjects the foundations on which the Holy Father bases his claims to a searching examination. But let tlw dœlJnt speak for itself, as ap in the official ahd authori#ed venion pub, f] filled by the Archimandrite Euxtathium Mino. of Manchester: "Agreeably to this aeored longing (tor union) our Orthodox Church of Christ is always ready to accept any proposal of union, if onlv the Bishop of Rome would shake off once for all the whole series of the, many and divers anti-evan- gelical novelties that have ]wen 'privily brought in' to IUI Church, and have provohd ti- "d division of the Mu,h" of th- East and Weøt,¡ and would r&Wm to the basis 01 the seron boly tKcumenicsa (-oncils. It then enumerates the point. of difference between the two Churches. But this 's not all "Pasrinir over, than, these serious and substantial differences between the two Churdlws respecting the faith, which diffetwoes were created in the W Nt we are fully persuaded that the Biehop of Rome was never considered an ti supreme atty and infal- ,ible had f *he ( t .as (?hureh history shows." This is proved at some length, and the subject is summed up in the following words: — "Such are, briefly, the serious and arbitrary innovations conoeming the faith and the administrative constitution of the Church which the Papal Churoh has introduced, and whinh. it u evident, the Papal Encyclioal purposely passes over in silence. These innovations, which have reference to essential points of the faith and of the administrative system of the Churoh, and which are manifestly opposed to the ecclesiastical condition of the first nine centuries, make the longed-for union of the Churches impossible, and every pious and orthodox heart is tilled with inexpressible sorrow on seeing the Papal Church disdainfully uer- siating in them, and not in the least contribut- ing to the sacred mtroose of union by re jecting those hel inOOvMíoo and coming back to the ancient oondition of the one H"ly, 'athiio, and Apostolic Ohuroh of Christ, of which she also at that time formed a part." We will conclude these quotations with the following: it xxii. But what are we to say of all that the Roman Pontiff writes when he addresses the glorious Slavonio nations ? Noone, indeed, has ever denied that it was by the virtue and the Apostolic labours of iM. Cyril and Methodius the grace of salvation was vouchsafed to not a few of the Slavonic peoples; but liis- tory testifies that at the period of the great Photius those Greek apostles to the Slavs and intimate friends of that Divine Father, setting out from Thessaloniea, were sent to convert the Slavonio tribes, not from Rome, but from Con- stantinople. Kvw if His Blessed- ness ia ignorant of it, history, never- theless, explicitly proclaims that the sacred apostle* to the Slavs enoounterod greater difficulties in their work from the liwhopa of Rome through their excommunioa- ticiM opposition than by the heathen inhabitants of th<xe ();tI¡III.'Y tlIe The whole of this document is instructive, and would we re-pay the attention of the reader. And how, then, doas the Church oi the East feel towsfds the Anglican Com- munion 1 Herews *ad on different ground, Although it must h* relJlotlnbered that there are points of difference betweaa the two Churoties in doctrine and ritual, y*4 they essentially resemble each other, and the 0111 are, coil- seauently. mrre cordial than tlkoo that exist between the Grwk and the Rorauia Commu- nioM? The temi-oftoial announcement that an Irishinau will probably rsferoe in the pb" I against England at Newport malcee our chance* much brighter than if a Scoteman had been hclding the whistle. They believe in the half Aseociition, dribbling, ae-you-please style of gMTio. A hit or knock on is not always a crime in their eyes. Their motto is, Keep moving," an admirable motto, no doubt, but one, as I say above, that does not altogether fit in with our Welsh notions. A correspondent writes me making suggestion that is no doubt a most admirable one if it were feaaibie. It is to the effect that the selected W i»lsh forwards should not take part in any game to-morrow (Saturday) and so leave themselves fit and eager for the match at Newport. If clubd could do with. out the man in question there is no doubt that it would be better for the mm, not only to avod risks of bein hurt, but also to ensure :tisn' ""b:u=ltf=:; rest, on the Saturday following. No <'o?. in wale cam" awn wiH stid dwm, but tlkom are other instances in which it is waU-nigh impossible for them to do 110. One case I have in mind, is Llwynypia, who are playing Treherbert, one of their etiffesi engagements during the smisoo. The winning or losing of that maitcii Meow much to Llwynypw. It meMa aa undefeated record aertainty erf the League cham- pionship if tbey wiB, On the othrr hand- but, perhaps, I had not batter cag. ss»ythin« about that. In cooft, Iwwevsr, whese, iha men can be spared, it would, for the good of the oountry, be wise if theiy were to give them- selves a rest, for, as I mentioned on the occa- sion of the North v. South match at Rich- mond, the Walsh forwards, to have any ohaooe with the English eight, hsve got to play hke demons, and stay ef.'ery eoiwnd of the time from start to finish. The aotion of the Welsh Union Committee in voting 430 towsad8 tha Gwynn fund will earn the entire approval and support of every in voting entirW e F Unioii. juurmg his oon. club in the WNMt Union. JDuraig his con- nection with Welsh fortbaU, Mr, Gwynn rendered invaluable owrioe, and it iø, I am surts, the wish of r41 sportsmen that his afriction be but a temporary one, and that we shall ere long see him back in committee again. The object of the fund now being raised is, M I understand it, two fold—to procure tb< beet opinion on hie case and to make his stay best Hrid?end institution as ?omfortabte possible. I note from the report that the case of J. Muir of the Wauoni tM, xw reported by Mr. "iüfe to the W" oommittes onbyJ. nesday night. International courtesy probably oaused the Welsh Union tio pees it on to the Scottish Union. It ill more than Likely, however, that our friends of the North will not takr the matter up. Solitary cases of this kind are net, I am afraid, loob,f upon in the serious Htfht that they ought to be. Saturday after Saturday ema occur and ohm dealt wiUI by a week's or a month's suspension, buoh a punish- ment practically ÕOtN no good. A suspension for the rest of the season or for an indefinite period would make men think more than once or twice before insulting a referee. The peouKar part of it is, though, that it is ly in the cte ol' the irreproachable amateur of the best typfp-or what one would expect to And the best tnJe-tdl rough play most frequently ocourn. Take Oxford for an example. More downright brutality is the result of a game in which they are engaged, than in almost any othar olub. And yet Oxford men are suppose to be gentlemen. Nor is it in the football field only that their rowdyism is made manifest. A case occurred at the Theatre Royal, Cardiff, the other evening, when several Blivnkheath men made idiots of themselves to the general annoyance of the house. It ie seldom that the working man element of the club does this kind d thing. He has more seme than some of the others, who have, perhapii, greater advantage in the way of education. A correspondent from the Hills joj? My memory M to the propoot? criast towio for the Rhonèda clubs, and m'ys he has not heard anything further about it. Neither have 1. but understand there is a chance of its being formed when the football sevoi. is a little further ad- vanced. A suggestion I heard whispered the other day WJII that there 11 a likelihood of the Glamorgan County C'rioket and Football Clubs amalgamating. Such a course would inevitably strengthen the hands of both parties, and a county football match, with ordinary luck, might easily produce a good round sum that would enable Mr. Brain and the county com- mittee to obtain pr-ofemioiwi Is and lift local orio- ket to a somewhat similar (tsmdard to that now oooupitd by local football. By the way, the Glamorgan erioket Aziures next season we of a much more important chap ratrter than has ever before been the caM- Matches in the second cAiw4 county competi- tion will, of course, be interesting, whilst in addition there will be matches with the M C.O. and Surrey teams.
