I ABERGELE Y. CONWAY.I
I ABERGELE Y. CONWAY. I (North Wales Junior Cup). I At Abergele, on Saturday, tiheee toame met in the second round tor t)tio North Wales Junior Cup, tho game being m charge of Mr S. Stubbs, of RhyJ. A strong cross-wind was blowing, and Abergele had this in their favour during tfce first ha-if. The homesters tried to find their feet, but the forwards were vigor- ously tackled the moment tihey got pos- session, and too sticky nature of the ground tended to hold the ball, to the detriment of their usual short passing tactics. However, with only ten minutes of the game gone the home team were two goals up, although it- cannot be said that they wero any bettor fchiaji Conway on the play. The home forwards, how- ever, are opportunists. Comvay re- doubled their efyorts tio-sudi purpose ibliat th-ey momentarily ran the home defence off its log-, and their first goal was quick- ly forthcoming from Idwal Daviee. This was followed shortly afterwards by the eq^ialiser, ajid iSgarn by a furthex goal, which ended the scoring in the-first half, a period full of and with never a dull moment. The outstanding feature during t,w iiret half, however, was a eolo run on the part of Jacity Jones, the home inside left, which defied all opposition, ajid resulted in quite a delightful goaJ. HaIL-tim,e:- Conway 3, Abergele 2. From the re-start Aberrgele preswi with d-etermi n ation, but Cooway defended stoutly, and, making a combined effort, eent the ball into the home net, and regis- tered their fourth goal. There wae tre- mendous cheering on the part of Conway's tlumerous supporters, who oocupied:a. large portion of the grand stand. The Abergede forwards, from the moment the bail was centred, prooe-edod to give the Conway defence sutdi a time as they are not Boon likely to forget. Goal number three ectmo along following very heavy pressure, but the eklualiaer had to be fought for tooth and nail. The visiting goalkeeper was in bis element. Nothing cowd pass him, and it is safe to say that he never VwiH a busv time in hie life. The Conway defenee wae in a very short time played to a standstill, And shots rained in on the keeper from all directions, the passing and dribbling of the 'Gele forwards being a revelation. In due course came the equalising gooll. It was inevitable, and t.boreai)ter tbo Conway boys had to ohase tl.ic Aborgcle front line in bewildering fashion, but with little hope of keeping the score &-wm. Goal followed goail until, witlh ten mintites left to play, Abergele had run their total up to nine, at which point Conway broke away and registered their fifth goal. The home team took tineir tenth goal m due course, and loud ohowiwg" announced their scoring ten goals. Final: Abergele 10, Conway 5. The home scorers were Jackie Jones 4. Harry Bayliff 3, Trevor Roberts 2, and Hub-ert WiMiams 1. NORTH WALES JUNIOR CUP. I (Second Round). 'VARSI'RY LLANTAIRFECIIAN. Played at Banr., The teams wcre :-1 Varsitv: A. W. Jones; G., Hu?bce, Libley; W. T. Williams, Humphreys, L. W. Jonee; W. Harvey, M. G. Jonee, A. F. Willia-nis, Connelly and J H. Roberts. Llanfairfcchan: J. Owen; H. Griffiths, M. trrithths; T. Parry, R. S. Jones, G. Whitehead; A. Jones, Hewitt, Athertn, R. Roberts and O. Thomaa. Referee Mr H. R. Wiiliams, Bangor. < Llanfairfechan won the tose, and at once made tracks for the 'Varsity goal, R. Ro- bert* sending wide with ody the goal- keeper to beat. Play wad transferred to the ofaher end, and 'Va.rsit.y forced a corner, from w'hich W. T. Williaxw drew first blood with a good shot. The etu- de ats got going again, and J, Owen fisted away a good drive by Harvey, the bal bein" met by A. Williams, who quiddy r?gi?ered No. 2. After this Llanfaj? fechan pulled thcrnsf?ea together, and kept peppering away at the College goal. Hewitt had hard lines, his shot just going over. Directly afterwards Atihertori, whe-i well placed, shot feebly into the 'Varsity custodian s hands. Half time: 'Varsity 2, Llanfairfcchan 0. 'Varsity wero eoon round the goail, and r J, Owen brought oft two or three line saves NVliltAiicad, who was playing a fine defensive game, cleared, and set his forwards going. Hewitt, sending in a fine centre, was met by R. Roberts, who scored No. 1 for Llanfairfecha-n, who tried hard to equalise, and they .were playing much. better. From a breakaway ?ie 'Varsity scored their tMrd goal, per Connelly. A foul a?ait?t 'Varsity ?et. A titer ton, who scored No. 2. The bail was hardly in-iiiotio-i when Llanfairfechan swept down on the 'Varsity goal, and A. Jones put them on level terms. WitN only a couple of minutes to go they again ran down the field, and were awarded a free kict, and T. Parry sent the ball sailing into the net. t.hus giving Llanfairfeciian i the privilege of qualifying in -he next round. Llanfairfechan scored their three goafe in nine minutes. 'Vai-sitv S. Final: Llanfairfechan 4, 'Vareity 3.

I BANGOR R.I. RES. v. HOLYHEAD R.I. RESERVES. (North Wales Junior Cup—Second Round). Played at Bangor on Saturday. The teams were as fol!Qws;- Bangor: F. II. Williams; A. S. Aitkoo arid William Hughes; W. Aitken, H. Owe-a and W. T. Williams; H. Parry, A. Pugh, H. Hughes, Frank Walsh and Randall James. Holyh.coci R.T. Res.: R. O. Thomas; Glynn Jones and R. Lewis: R. 'Rotart«v .W. T. Jones and Joseph Jones; J. Williams, W. R. Williams, W. Jara« Hughes and U. O. Jonee. Referee: Mr W. J. Jones, Llanllcchid. As wiJI be noticed Holyhead played oniy ten men throughout- the game, and 'despite ttiis. disadvantage they put up a good fight: The first dangerous move was made by H. O. Jones, who crashed the ball against the cross- bar and eventually it went out of play. Ho!y- bead, who had the assistance of the veteran W. T. J ines, pressed, but they seemed to I have a faint idea of the location of the goal. They were repeatedly robbed by Wm. Tudcr, Williams, who tackled splendidly. Randall James initiated a move by the Bangor for- wards but sent wide. At length Jimmy Wil- liams scored for Holyhead and Pugh equal- ised, that being the score at the interval. The second half was no better than the first, and the game finished up in a draw OIf two goals each. It is understood ih-t the game will be re- played at, Holyhead during the Christmas holidays.

COMRADESHIP AT BANGOR I Bangor Railway Institute applied for per- I mission to play their two league matches with the Bangor Comrades on the ground of the latter club. The application was granted. TO RRPRESENT COAST LEAGUE. I The Chairman, before the team was selected to represciit the league, against- the North Wales Coast Association, a trial match for the Welsh Amateur Iniernational fixtures later on in the season, urged the committee to select the best possiDle team. "I don't want you to I pick your own men," lie said. "Just remem- her that there arc good players in other teams. The trouble in the past has been that clubs have been arranging to support each other's men." Mr R. T. Hughes (Denbigh) raised tho question of voting powers, and complained that there were persons in the room who were not entitled to vote. It was decided to restrict the voting to the vice-presidents and the actual representatives of thc, clubs. Mr AV. J. Jones (Llechid) asked what would happen if an Englishman was picked to play. Would he he eligible to play for Wales if selected by the Welsh Association? The Chairman We have been asked to se- lect a team to represent the league. Mr J. Thomas (Bangor) asked what use it was selecting an English player who would ho ineligible to play for Wales in an internation- al. The following team was selected :-(-,oat, Stallard (Conway); right full, Frank Pierce (Glasinfryn); left full, Clem Arnold (Conway); right haif, H. Edwards (Bangor Railway In- stitute); centre half (C. Pierce (Glasinfryn); left half, R. Pattison (Bangor Comrades); outside right, R. H, Roberts (Carnarvon); in- side. right-, E. E. Thine. (Denbigh); centre, Josephs (Holyhead); inside lelt., R. C. Davies (Feetiniog); outside left, W. M. Furber (Ban- gor Railway Institute). Reserves: Goal, J. JI, Jones (Holyhead); right, full, Ted Parry (Colwyn Hay', loft full, Roland Williams (Holyhead); right half, Ab- bitt (Holyhead); centre half, Aspinall (Bangor Comrades); left- half, Hugh Caulfield (Bangor Railway Institute); outside right, W: Ather- ton (Bangor Railway Institutnl: inside right, J. Jones (Bangor Railway Institute); centre, J. Neal (Bangor 'Varsity); inside left, H. Davies (Bangor Comrade; outside left, an- other from Portmadoc (whose name could not lin ascertained) 1- GLASINFRYN'S CLAIM. I Glasinfryn claimed 19s lOd from the Holy- head Club for failing to fulfil a League lixturc at The Holyhead representative explained that a team was selected but circumstances arose which kept the men at work and the authori- ties would not 'let them off. They were pre- pared to pay any reasonable claim. Several members objected to the charge of 6s 6d for the fare of a Glasinfryn player from Llysfacn, Mr Morris (Fe-stiniog) pointing out that it would create a dangerous precedent. "For instance," ho said, "Fostiniog mighf- have a player from South Africa and might charge his fare" (laughter). The Chairman thought the clubs In, tlk, ()g- weti Valley should be well supported. They were showing great spori in paying their ex- penses oat of their own pockets, and they should not be put to unnecessary expense. It was decided to order Holyhead to pay 198 lOd, but nc Fine wa." imposed. CARNARVON S FUTILE PROTEST. Carnarvon protested against thtfir recent Sg§ ame rajll::1t Bangor Comrades being counted a League fixture. The secretary stated that he arranged the match IvecAtise Colwyn Bay could not jOurncv to Carnarvon, and he regarded it as a League match. Carnarvon, however, contended that it was a friendly and handed a protest to the referee against it being counted as a League match. Mr Phillips (Carnarvon) said that all along the Carnarvon players regarded the match as a friendly. It was advertised as such, and if the committee ruled otherwise the Carnar- von club would be punished financially. The gate was only tB, whereas Bangor were (II, ways the biggest draw at Carnarvon. If the game had I -*cii advertised as a League match the gate would have been much larger. They were running a team at Carnarvon this year under great difficulty and entirely for the sake of the League, which would not be complete without the county town being represented. If Carnarvon had won, the protest would still have been made. Mr R. Pattison (Bangor) observed that the Comrades would not have been so foolish as to have gone to Carnarvon simply to play a friendly. Mr Williams (Carnarvon) said they could not get a proper team to play. One man was quite unfit to play. Mr Parry (Conway) asked why the secretary of the League was asked to arrange the match if it was only a friendly. It was decided to regard the match as a league match, and the protest fee was re- fn rn/»H .u. PLAYERS TRANSFERRED. I The following transfers were cojil-irnied John E. Owen, from Llanrwst to Dolgarrog; Kobert Pierce, from Nantlle Vale to Carnar- von, J E. Neal, Bangor Comrades to Conway; Edward Caradoc Jones, Penmaenmawr to Llanfairfcchan; Thomas Donaldson, Bangor Comrades to LlagflMrfcchan; Harry Jones, Llanrwst to DolgsWg; and 14. lvey Gerrard, Llanrwst- to Jkil^arrog. H. Bryri Jones applied for his transfer from Holyhead to Bangor Railway Institute. Ho slat(A that lie had not yet been granted a game at Holyhead. The Chairman stated that since his transfer to Holyhead H. Bryn Jones had been selected for carlL game with the second team, but ho declined to play for them. If all players took up that attitude there would be no reserve teams on the Coast. Several members suggested that the appli- cation should be refused, but Mr J. Thomas (Railway Institute) pointed out that they could not do that. The application was granted. The following fixtures were arranged:- DECEMBER 20th. DIVISION I. Conway v. Uanrwst-Mr 11. R. , FOOTBALL NOTES.I
FOOTBALL NOTES. By their victory at Manchester, on Saturday, West Bromwich Albion again went to the head of the First Division. Notts County wore responsible for one of the surprises of the day, for few thought thftm oapablo of winning at Everton. It was their first away victory of the sea- son. In the Second Division the highest score on Saturday wa. that of Hull City, who found the net four times against Lin- coln City. The latteT scored first, but they were easily beaten at the finish. Tho best lwrforiiiajice of the day in the Southern League was that of Portsmouth at Swindon, a threc- clear goal victory be- ing the result. Cardiff Oity also proved too strong for Crystal Palace, wmning 2 1 after eneh side had from a penalty. The first of the Rugby Union interna- tional trial matches was played at Liver- pool, on Saturday, when England defeat- ed the North by two goals and live tries 1,25 points) to five tries (15 points). During the exciting match between St. Asaph and Rhyl Juniors, Wynno Roberts, the former's skipper, received injuries of such a nature tti.,it will keep him out of the field for some time. Since their unlucky reverses in League fixtures at the hands of Dolgarrog and iietiiefxia, Abergele now eeem to have .wttled down to their game. In fotvr matches played alter tnose losses tnev have secre-d 29 goals. The match o.n Saturday with Conway was faust. throughout, Conway stuck it grimly for the first foaty^livo minutes, but thereafter the pace became amazing, considering the state of the ground, and the home team kept Referee Stmbbe busy registering their goals. Abergele will field tJile following team against Glasinfryn on the earnc ground on Saturday: W. Lothian Jones; Groves and Phillips; Geoff. E vans, John David Jones, and Jack Winlcup; Trevor Roberts, Deacon, Sheard, Hubert Wrll.u^ik' and W. 0 Dodd. Penmaenmawr, are to, play Bethesda Comrades on Sat-urday in a League match. Three members of tiic Conway football team have been selected for amateur in- ternational honours. They are Ohas- Staiiard (goa!), Clem. Arnold (left full oack), and J. Neal (reserve foT centre- forward position). The match arranged to take place on the Morfa, Conway, last Saturdlay between ilolvjicad and Conway had to be aban- doned owing to the Holyhead team not turning up. The reason given was that seven members of the Holyhead team, who axe employed on the docks, were detained on special work. On Thursday the St. Aeaph County- School team played the City eleven and won by 4--0. Barmouth Comrades jour"(-,I,ecl to Harlech 011 Saturdav to play the laiter town s team ill a friendly encounter, and returned victorious to tho tune of 5 goals against n il, The following teams have consented to i)in the Cambrian Coast- League, which is now be- ing formed, vi. In a ten-round boxing match between Jack Sharkey and Jimmy Wilde at Milwaukee 011 Saturday the former was declared the winner on points by the t ressmen present. Sharkey, who had the advantage of Hi lbs. in weight, forced the fighting at the start, landing his right to Wilde s head. Milde retreated, but showed garoeness. and when the bout was stio com plated drove ?harhey to the ropes. inplat tiroye ?,?tiarke ttic rupes. Drastic changes for the government of the Amateur Golf Ch::mpiomhip were made on Monday at a meeting Of the con- trolling clubs. The control of the competi- tion was vested in the Royai and Ancient Club, with a recommendation that tbc-rc shall be district quaihfyfing rounds for the United Kingdom. The Adv i?ory Cricket Committee have recommended to the M.C.C. t-ha.t Public School players should have a three years' qualification for the county in which their school is situated.
ITHE CARPENTIER-BECKETT .FIGHT.
I THE CARPENTIER-BECKETT FIGHT. ITS SWIFT TERMINATION. All sorts of queer explanations arc being suggested for the swift and surprising down- fall of Beckett in the first round at last Thurs- day's historic encounter. The Southampton boxer, though he does not wear his heart on his sleeve, is a man capable of deep feeling, and it is quite possible that his form was affected by the shock of hearing, just before he entered the ring, that one of bis best- and pluckiest sparring partners had been the vic- tim of a fatal accident at the National Sport- ing Club. Bad news should always be kept back in such a case. for any obsessing thought prevents complete sclf-concentration on the business in hand. Certain occult explanations, however, of Beckett's defeat reach the height of absurd- ity. -One is that. the personality of C-arpenti- er's trainer, M. Descamps, entered the ring with him, in the form of an astral body pre- sumably. which helped to beat his opponent. Another is that Carpentier's gaze hypnotised Beckett. (arp(,ntier's fighting look is rather curious, suggesting a tort of ingrowing fer- ocity, and ap Italian spectator once insisted' that he had the "evil eye." But all this talk of spookery in the ring is merely playing up to the unwholesome modern craze which now calls itself 'Spiritism." Carpentier returned to Paris on Monday, a crowd of over 100,000 persons assembling at the railway station to greet him. Questioned by an Exchange, Telegraph Com- pany's representative Carpentier declared that he was willing to fight Demp.-ey for the world's championship.

=========== I CONWAY RURAL COUNCIL. I NEW HOUSING SITES. COTTAGE PROPERTY AT LLYS. FAEN. At a meeting of the Conway Rural Council, on Friday. Mr John Jonee, J.P., presided. and the other members present were: Messrs J. W. Raynes, J.P., W. F. Jones, Edward Williams, Evan Hughes, Edv-in Davies, Hugh Owen, John Hughes, John Roberts, and the Rev. J. C. Jones, with the Clerk (Mr James Porter), the Surveyor (Mr T. Owen), a.nd the Sanitary Inspector (Mr L. John). A vote of sympathy Nvaq passed with Mr W. D. Powell on the death of his son. CLAIMS FOR ROADS. The Clerk reported to the Committee that he had an interview with an official from the Engineer's Office, Chester, with reference to the claim for the period ended 31st August last, and it was hoped an early settk-nient would be made. The Surveyor forwarded an estimate of the cost of tho reinstatement of these roads as given the 1st September, amounting to JB978 6s 4d. The Olerk further reported that a claim < for £ 710 4s Id had been sent to the Joint Roads Committee in respect of the addi- tiocial cost incurred on Glyn-road, as a result of the damage caused by the tim- ber traffic. I HOUSING AT LLANSANT- I FFRAID. JLne Purveyor, having reported regard- ing certain negotiations concerning the Llewelyn-terrace housing site, the Housing Committee recommended that the Llewelyn terraoe site be abandoned; that the Surveyor should write to Mr Coatcs that it would not be necessary to take up his fruit trees on this site; and that a committee, consisting of the fol- lowing members, Messrs Hugh Owen, John Jones, Evan Hughes, John Roberts, and Ed. Williams, be appointed to visit and report on the Glan Conway sites. It was further reported that the com- mittee referred to met at Glaji Conway, and were unanimous in their opinion that the Llewelyn-terrace site be abandoned, owing to the excessive CŒt of sewer, ton- ant compensation, and water, and that a new site be obtained. The Committee in- spected the Ty Mawr "A"' site, adjoining the Police Station, which thoy agreed was in every way suitable. They also inspect- ed another site near Fehn Isaf "B." adjoining main road, and belonging to Mr C. B. Jones-Mortimer. This was a suit- able site, but somewhat removed from tho village. The Council's main runs along maim road, and it could easily bo drained by septic tank and filter, the effluent being taken into the river across the road. It was resolved that the Surveyor should write to Air Jomes-Mortamer's agent, asking whether he would give an acre of the plot "B" in lieu of that at Llewelyn-terrace. » THE GRAIG BUIT.MND STTF The Surveyor furtner reported that fie had written to Mr Hugh Davies, Gors- wen, asking him to reconsider his decision ac, to the price of this site. He aleo saw Mr Daviess, who appeared then to be favourable to accepting the valuer's offer of £70. Mr Davies, it was stated, had eince aerreed to this offer. CONDITION OF LLYSFAEN COT- TAGES. In the course of his report to the Coun- cil, the Sanitary Inspector referred to Ar- von Cottages., Llyefaen, aind recommended building a brick partition wall inaido tno cottages, with a clesir 2-inch oavity, be- tween the brick lining and the existing wall, with proper wail ties; to make pro- vision at the bottom of the cavity, to drain away any moisture that may come tnrough the wall. Mr Raynes said he would like to ask why this matter had not been reported previously while the property was in pos- session of the former landlord, who* bad just sold it. Mr John said the new purchaser was awaro of the condition of the cottages. He (the inspector) had knowledge of their condition for the past two years. Mr Raynes asked why it had taken two years to report the matter? It was rather hard on the new owner. These cot- tages were under the road, and got no sun, and he proposed that a committee be appointed to inspect them and decide whether they were fit for habitation. Mr Evan Hughes seconded, and Messrs Edward Williams, Hugh Owen, J. W. Raynes and Edwin Davies were selegted on the committee. Mr Raynes took exception to a refer- ence in the- sanitary inspector's report to Railway Cottages, Llysfaen. He asked why the matter was brought before the Council. Messrs Kneeshaw, Lupton and Co. would have carried out the work. Mr John said he had n6t first ap- proached the owners. The Rev. J. C. Joyes asked whether other owners, in respect of whose property complaint was made, were first ap- proached. Mr John said it was customary first to bring the subject of complaint to the notioe of the owner, and if it continued to report the matter to the Council. The Chairman instructed Mr John al- wavs to follow that course in future. LLYSFAEN WATER SUPPLY. The Surveyor reported that to supply water to certain isolated properties at Llysfaen, as requested by the Parish Coun- cil, would prove a very expensive master, as in some -cases it would be necessary to lay the water pipes for a long distance in solid rock. The matter was defeyrfd for farther in- quiry aaid consultation with the PariEh Council. PARLSH COUNCIL AND HOUSING. Mr Raynes mentioned that he had- re- ceived a communication from the Llysfaen Parish Comical with respect to housing, and containing a suggestion that a.s a quarry owner he ehou'd carry out snoh cx- tension. H? had replied that the question of the erp?tion of houses wa-s a m?tt?r for t.?? Rural District Council. REPAIR OF A FOOTBRIDGE. Mr W. F. Jones referred to t-fie state 01 a footbridge oyeP a river and connecting the parishes of Llechwedd and Llan- gelyli in. The Rev. J. C. Jones said Liangelynin had no parish council, but a. paruMi meet- ing was held annually. The work of re- pair might perhaps be effected ami the two parishes a-sked to pay tho bill. On the proposition of Mr "Hugh Owen, it was decided to write to the parishes point- ing out their responsibility in the matter.
