Full application liaving been instituted, they regretted that it would not be pos- sible to open an office at Llanfairfechan at the present time. Thfc Chairman mentioned that two similar applications had now been refused by the Ministry. (Would it not be possible to offer the Council room twice a week to the Mini- stry ? It waa clear that the Ministry ob- jected to renting rooms. This suggestion ira,i agreed to.

Cortot, the famous French I 'ail*.t, who J'! i;ht:tl a large audience at the Bangor Musical Ciub concert last week, was recently I aske.d his views as to the various audiences be.fc,re whom he has played. M. Cortol said there was no uch thing as a good and a bad public, but there a.re good and bad artists. Interpreters very often made the mistake of attributing to a work, the remarkahle execution of which called forth applause, a musical importance that was all too often exaggerated. Rather should they learn to appreciate the elo- quence of silent appreciation on the con- clusion of a performance the nobility and beauty of which had made the audience forget the personality of the player. BRABAZON SOCIETY. The Old Vicarage was the set-no on Wednesday of the 24th annual sale of work of the Braba- zon Society which hc/ps materially to alleviate the lot of those foroed to enter the workhouse by providing comforts for them. With tlhe exception of the flowers and the cakes, all the axticles for sale were made by inmates of the workhouse, in- cluding baskets. raffia books, blotters, and rugs of very artistic design. A com- mittee of the ladies of the church, with Mrs John Bo wen as president, and Mrs Owen, Victoria Park, and Misa Winifred Owen as joint secretaries, was responsible for the fcxcellcnit catering. A first-class programme, was sustained by Messrs R. A. Williams, Bow en Thomas, Maeloo Jones, Misses Clarke, and Vera Wynn Davies, from the Univensity College, and Misses Laura Davies and L. Jenkins and Messrs Rhys Owen aDdtbOiven Jones, of the Normal College, while Mrs Davies, Brighton House, The Crescent, gave an aitistic rendering of that favourite song, "The Glory of tlie Sea. The accom- panist was Miss Odwen Rowlands, F.R.C.O., the organist of the church. The welcome of the church to the students was voiced by the Rev. H. Reus Davies, Mr Charles Bow en, Mr H. R. Jones, and the church secretary, Mr W. R. Jones, who conducted the mooting. The thanks of the students was, at the instance of two ladies, given in the orthodox way. The young people of the church had gone to a great deal of expense and trouble to decorate the school- room. and all present admired the great taste shown. 'By common consent this was one of the best socials ever held under the aegis of the church. PETTY SESSIONS. I The weekly sessions were held on Tues- day before Messrs W. P. Matthews (chairman), J. E. Griffith, G. Lewis Grif- fith, and Dr. Pritdhard (Bethesda). Owen Williams, formerly of Steeple lane, Beaumaris, was summoned for leav- ing his wife and two children chargeable to the Guardians. It was stated that the defendant, who was arrested in Glasgow, joined the Army in 1914, and was demo- bilised last February. Mr T. J. Jones, relieving officer, Beau- maris, stated that the wife had applied to him for food as she was destitute. The Guardians allowed her 10s a week, which was r educed to 6s, because she had obtained employment to ofewl an office. She had received 215 9s from the Guard- ians. She was a reispcotable, hard- working woman, and the defendant had no reaison to run away from her.-The Defendant said he was willing to rer pay the Guardians. There was no reason why he should leave her because she was a good woman.—The Bench sentenced ltim to one month's imprisonment. Thomas Jones, Penrhosgarnedd, sum- moned his brother, William Joneis, from the same locality, for assault. Mr S. R. Ðr-,v was for the complainant, and Mr H. W. Thornton Jones for the d(-fondant.-It was alleged that the defendant kicked the complainant. ANN'S. tiOLDEN WEDDINC.—At the Parish Band Room on Wednesday evening the presentation was made of a beautiful autograph album from all the members of the Penruyn Women's Institute to Mr and Mrs John Ilughes, Tai Duon, on the occasion of their golden w edding. -Nlr Jlij,Iies (Eos Ceraiiit) is well • known throughout North Wales as a successful choir leader. He was for many years lay clerk (alto) in Bangor Cathedral, and is now organist and choir leader of St. Ann's Church, where he has a choir of which any leader might well be proud. Mrs Hughes has been a most zealous and useful member of the Institute. The pre- sentation was made by Mrs Morgan, The Vic- arage, the president of the Institute. The Mayoress of Bangor was unable to be present owing to indisposition. Mr and Mrs Hughes were married in Bangor Cathedral on Novem- ber 26th, 1869, by the late Rev. Daniel Evans. Vicar of Bangor.

I vonshire Education Committee yesterday over the proposal of the Finance Committee to increase the wages of the cleaner, of Cefnl'aes Mr Jeremiah Tho- mas contended that the increase was inade- quate. The payment worked out at about 5jd an hour. The cleaner, who gave 47 hours a week to the work, had served in tlic force. He moved an amendment that all increase be made to £í8. A letter was read from the managers point- ing out that the lIlall looked after the school garden during the holidays and was respon- sible for its supervision and for the sale of the produce. The Director of Education explained that the wages were fixed at £ 73 last- year because of the difficulty of finding a cleaner. Two years ago the wages were only £ 3o. Mr Maurice Jones suggested £ 60 for clean- ing and CiB for looking after the choul garden. Mr Muir said he was amazed to hear that the cleaner put in 47 hours at the school. Dr. Parry said the proposed' salary was higher than that paid in any other school for a part-time worker. While he agreed that disabled soldiers should be given these jobs, there should be no special pleading before the committee. Mr Ivor Jones urged the committee not to be frightened bv the rates bogey, The recommendation of the Finance Commit- tee was carrie-d by a large majority.
