Air George Did they wish "good luck" to this Questioned by Mr Nee, Sergt. Jones denied having asked each man if he had paid for his own drink. Air Nee, for the defence, commented upon tin- absence of evideneo proving that one ran ordered the whole of the drink. The police, lie submitted, went after Rowlands to the I lid, and failing to get a case against the licencee, for permitting drunkenness, tried to y t e m for treating. There was a scarcity 0" beer in Carnarvon that night, end there was n >i flux of customers at the Eagles, which had ft si j)- ply. Each man paid for his own drink md there W;LS no Ueaung. Superintendent Williams took exception .o a statement, made by Mr Nee that the sergeant, noticing that one of the men named Rowlands, was drunk, waited until he thought he had, been served before entering the hotel. He hopeod Air Nee would prove that state ncvit in evidence. Air Nee: I will conduct my own case, if you please. Superintendent Williams: But you must con- duct it fairly. Air Nee I make no statements which I cannot substantiate. Airs Toleman, oil oath, denied that there v as any treating. Each man paid for his own drink, and she told the sergeant that she never allowed treating. E. J. Griffith, Baptist-street, said he orly paid for his own drink as lie knew Ue:i >g was prohibited. When he went IIIto the hotd with Rowlands he passed the se>'geaht. Sim- ilar evidence was given by the ::ie,i dated m lia-ve been treatui. They said that v heji the sergeant ked who haR paid for th's dr;i k" they took it he wanted to know who paid for the drink in front of Griffiths. The Bench fined each defendant 21s and costs. Edward J. Griffith, 24, Baptist-street, who was alleged to have treated the other men, was fined 10s 6d, including costs. DURING PROHIBITS" hoi Kfs. I Hugh Williams, of Iho Newftorougii ms, was fined P-2 28 and costs for opening during prohibited hours, and Mary Tomokins, High- street, was fined 10s 6d and costs for :>euig found on licensed premises during prohibited hours.
THE CHURCHES.I
THE CHURCHES. I THE LIVING OF CARNARVON. I INDUCTION OF THE REV. JOHN AIORGAN I The ceremony of admitting the Rev. John Alorgan as curate in cliarge of Carnarvon took place at Christ Church, Carnarvon, on Sunday. A large congregation attended the ceremony, which was performed by the Bishop of bangor. Among the clergy present were Archdeacon J. Morgan (father of the new eurate-in-charge), the Rev. Walter Jones (curate), and Father Southani, with tlie wardens of Christ Church, Messrs Trevor Hughes, Coedhelen, G. H. Hum- phreys and C. Crebbin. The Bishop preached, and after the sermon proceeded to the front of the altar. Archdea- con Alorgan and the llislwp's Chaplain (Rev. tt". Williams) conducted the curate-in-charge to His Lordship, who said :Brethren, the Rev. J. W. Wynne-Jones having represented to us that owing to illness and other infirmities he is no longer able to perform satisfactorily tile duties pertaining to his office as vicar of fhis parish, and petitioned us to grant him exemp- tion and licence of lion-residence, and nomi- nated the Rev. John Alorgan to perform the duties in his place, we, Watkin Herbert, by divine permission Lord Bishop of Bangor, have, after due consideration, consented to his re- quest. And we do now require you the Rev. John Morgan to read your public assent to the articles of religion and the Book of Common Prayer in order that the cougregation may be assured as to the faith you hold and the doc- trine you will teach." The Bishop then admitted the Rev. John Alorgan "to the cure of souls in the parish," and conferred on him "the same power of preaching and administering the Holy Sacra- ment and of Government in as full and ample a manner as if the benefice had been vacant, and you had been appointed incumbent thereof." The service included Choral Communion to Woodward's setting in E Flat, and two num- bers from Alendelssohn's "St. Paul"—the duett "Now we are Ambassadors," sung by Alessrs Afaehlin and Land, and the chorus "How lovely are the Afessengers." Miss Hamer presided at the organ.

HONOUR FOR WELSH NURSE. AWARDED THE CROIX DE GUERRE. 1 The many fi-ictids of Aliss Bessie Jones, Ynys- for. Penrhyndeudraeth. will bo pleased to hear of her success in France in being awarded the Croix de Guerre. At the outbreak of the war. fired with en- thusiasm and full of ambition to get to Vrance to do something, she repeatedly applied to -he home authoritif's for work in any capacity in France, but without; success. However, nothing daunted, and being a good linguist, she ap- nroaehed the F. rench Government, who promptly accented her services for the French Red Cross, and early in 1915 she was dQingo "spade" work in the Military Hospital at Yvelofc. After service in several hospitals, early in 1918 she was attached to an ambulance with the French Army in Champagne, and there ex- perienced the stern realities of war, being fre- quently under artillery fire and bomb attacks. She was appointed anaesthetist to the ambir- lance, and assisted dtilv in numerous opera- tions. often for hours at a time, and entailing a heavy physical strain. But pluck, nerve, and a srim determination to carry on and not give in carried her throusrh. and her splendid work was brousrht to the notice of the French Oov- ernment. who awarded her the Croix de Guerre for coolness and bravery under fire in Cham- pasrne while attendiiur wounded. At a large parade last month General Gouraud btfstowed tho decoration, congfratu- latinsr and complimenting Inr on her much ap- preciated work. Nurse Jones is now with the French armv of oCIIPation at Strasburg.
