He was educated at Welshp. County School and Aberystwyth College, and on the outbreak of war was on the staff of the British Museum. I 'Lieut. Timothy Cecil Nelson Hall, M.C., K.S.L.I., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Hall, Oakley House, Shrewsbury, is gazetted captain August 19, 1917. Lieut. Jack Walter Hallowes, M.C K.S.L.I., son of Colonel F. Hallowes, Indira Army, is gazetted captain, and is to remain seconded August 18,1917. He won tlie M.C. in 1916. Sec.-Lieut. George Warden Richards, R.W.F., youngest son of Mr. and Jlrs. John Richards, Llynclys, is gazetted lieutenant, February 16. He was educated at Oswestry Grammar School, and entered Sandhurst Royal Military College. Temp. Sec.-Lieut. (on prob.) Edwin Jocelyn Ffoulkes Jones, R.F.C., Gen. List, second son of Mr. E. Ffoulkes Jones, Arosfa, Lian gollen, is confirmed in his rank, March 19. Cadet Harry Davies. M.M., eldest son cf j Mr. L. Davies. Greenfields, and nephew of Mr. Glynn Hill, Shrewsbury, has obtained a commission in the Royal Air Force. Cadet H. L. Palmer, son, of Councillor J. Palmer, Shrewsbury, has been given a com- mission in the Wilts Regiment. Mr. Rowland Thomas of Oswestry has been posted from the Artists Rifles Officer Cadet Battalion to the 6th R.W.F., and at.ched to the 4th R. W.F., now in training in North Wales. Mr. Percy Jestico, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Jestico, Buttington. has been gazetted second lieutenant in the Sherwood Foresters. He has served in France with the lst Life Guards for over three years, and possesses the Mons star and four service chev- rons.

I At Wrexham Petty Sessions, on Friday, John Jones and his wife, Ana Jones, 6, Bel j grave-terrace, Johnstown, two septuagen. I ariana, were charged with making false re-i presentations concerning wages for the pur-I pose of securing a continuance of an old agai pension. lit appears that John Jones was employed at Hafod Colliery, and between] January 8rd,. 1917, and De mber 24, 1917 his average earnings amounted to Pl 18s. 5&d. He told the old age pensions officer that his- average wage was Ll per week. In conse- quence of his statement, defendants had re oeived R.39 15s., to which they v .e not en- titled. The male defendant admitted tel the officer that his wages amounted to £ 1 pe week. He was not working more than aoou two days a week then. He thought he could do a day or two's work now and then, and that it would be no harm. When 1 j was in- formed that he had received money to which he was not entitled he offered to repay it by isetabno,nts.-The magistrates decided to fine defendants £ 5 each. ?

Boot-street. Whittington, has been, killed in action. He was only 19 years of age, and pr'or to enlistment was employed by the L. and N.W. RaHway Company. Jones, Pte. Ernest, Res. Army Infantry School. Pte. Jones (23), who is the youngest son of Mr. Edward Jones, Sparbridge, Ellesmere, prior to join- ing up in June last was employed at Ellesmere College. He has been in France since September. e is the third member of the family to pay the supreme sacrifice, and much sympathy is felt for his relatives. His only remaining brother, who has been badly wounded, has had his discharge from the army. His officer, in a letter of gym- pathy to his mother, said that he was killed in- stantaneously by a. shell during the time the school had to go into the line He (the writer) had com- manded the Demonstration Company, and saw a good deal of him. He was one of the hardest workers they had ever had in the Company, and everybody missed him very much. He died doing his duty for his country, and helped to make the operation for which the school was put into the line a success. Sides, Pte. Daniel. Pte. S'des. grandson of Mrs. Sides of Bank Street, Lodge, Wrexham has been killed in action in France. He was 35 years of age, and was formerly em- ployed at the Brymbo Steel Works. A few years ago he went to Shotton to live. Williams, Pte. W. E. The death in action on April 9, is announced of -Pt,e -Williams, draper, in partnership with his brother, Mr. R. W. Williams, grocer, Berwyn Stores, Llanrhaiadr. He is survived by a widow and two little boys. Williams, Pte. Noel. Pte. Williams, son-of the Rev. Evans, aged 19, has been missing since- the I heavy fighting on April 9. News has been received that L.-Crpl. Geoffrey Bell, son-in-law of Mr and Mrs. Pilot, Hall-street. Welsh- pool, is a prisoner of war in the hands of the Germans He had been In France 14 months when invalided home with trench feet in May last. He returned in December, and was in the neighbour- hood of St. Quentin when captured on March 22. Cartwright, Arthur. Pte Arthur Cartwright, South StaJs. RegJmeit. whose home is at Watergate-street, Ellesmete, is a prisoner in the hands of the enemy. He has three brothers serving. Chetta, Charles Henry. Pte. Charles Henry Chetta, Swan Hill, Ellesroeit, who was in the thick of it in th, initial stsjges of the German push, is now a prisoner. Cremorne, John Powell. Pte. Cremorne, Ellesmere, who has four brothers serving. Darby, Pte, A., London Rifles. Mr. and Mrs. Darby, The Swan, Hookagate, re- ceived a postcard from their son. pte" Darby, stat- ing that he was a prisoner of war in Germany. Pte. Darby is 27 years of age, and prior to'the war worked for Mr. Blakeway Phillips, Hanwood Mills. Evans, Pte. Richard. Pte. Evans, brother of Mr. Tom Evans, Coedygo Cottages, near Oswestry was taken prisoner by the Germans on March 21 at St. Quenxin, but is un" wounded. He joined up a few months after war broke out and has served in France two years. He was home on leave last July and until now had hot been wounded. Prior to enlistment he was in the employ of Mr. William Hughes, Ty-Canol, Trefonen. Griffiths, Signaller Clifford. Signaller Griffiths, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Griffiths, Smithfield Road, Wrexham, is a prisoner of war in Germany. In civil life he was at the \Vrexham Post Office He enlisted in May, 1916, and went to France, in March, 1917. Griffiths, Pte. Charles, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Mrs. Griffiths, 2, Glanaber Terrace, Oswestry, re- ceived a postcard on Wednesday from her third son, Pte. Griffiths, informing her that he is a prisoner of war in Germany but unwounded. He has served in i France for two years and was home on leave last November. He has been wounded twice. Prior to l enlistment he carried on business as a coal merchant in partnership with his brother in Upper Church Streets, Oswestry. His youngest brother, Pte.
