I Favoured with delightful weatlier, the fete ar- ranged on Wednesday by the Conoervative and Unionist. Association Bowling Olub, on their ground in Plasllwyd, for the soldiers of the Mili- tary Hospital, was a complete success. Over 120 of the men enjoyed the haspitalitf/ of the Club, and though the undertaking was rather a formid- able one, those responsible entered into the ar- rangements with much zest and success. The guests were received by the Captain of the Club (Mr Gower Griffith), who said they felt honoured to have the privilege of entertaining them, although in a very small and inadequate war, and to expreg? to them sincere sympathy and g*,eat and cve't!a?ting gratitude for all they had done (hear, tear). They had in very truth laid clown their lives for their King and country, and they had miraculously come through the very jaws of death in order to keep our homes and úlr country secure. "We can never estimate, and never repay the debt we owe to the brave men of Kitchener's Army," said Mr Gower Griffith. Tea was prepared for the men under the super- intendence of Mri) Gower Griffith, and the bed oases at the hospital were also entertained at the institution in like manner. A novel feature of th-e catering was that each helper was asked to bring a home-made cake. After tea, a diversi- fied programme of music and dancing, arranged by Mr W. Jones, High-street, was gone through. Though it lasted several liotir,5, the programme went with a swing from start to finish. The "Clio" band attended, by permission of Captain Langdon, R.N., and the Ladies' Choir gave selec- tions from their wide repertoire. Mr J. E. ign(-,Il who conducted the "Clio" band, also sang. Among others who added to the afternoon's en- joyment were Miss Gwenllian Evans, the Misses Hannoviteh, Bethesda, who sang and danced; Mesa's H. T. Jones, W. Jones, J. E. Lewis, T. Parker, and one of the patients, while two "Clio" boys clane&d the cake walk. Miss M. 1.. Eardley acted as accompanist. At tho close of the pro- gramme, Mr Gowar Griffith proposed, and Mr J. Hughes, Penybryn seconded^ a yoto of Shanks to the artistes, which was carried with acclama- tion. Corporal Jones, of the Royal Engineers, pro- posed a vote of -thanks to the Club for the splendid time they had given the men, who e-x- pressed their gratctude with loud chccrs. The aii/thonities of the Cathedral, Tabcrnaole Chape!, and Horeb Chapel kindly lent tables and chairs, etc., and Mr Henry Davies carried out the decorations in the groun-cb. The secretarial duties weiro carried out by Mr William Owen, A special word of praise is due to Mr J. O. j Hughes, William-street, for useful work in many directions. A YOUTH S ESCAPADE. I At the Police Court, h&!d on Tuesday, before Mr J. Evan Roberts (chairman!, the Mayor (Mr R. J. Williams), and Mr W. D. Hobson, Bertie Robeit-t (17), Garden-square, was charged with scoaling 7s 6d from the Picture Palace, High-street, and also a. bicycle, valued at E2 103, belonging to Mr W. Evans, High-street. Superintendent Griffith said the defendant- had been employed as cleaner at. tho Palace. On Jcly 24sh, Miss Eva Griffith, the earlier there, left 7s od in a drawer at the office, wltieh was locked. The defendant obtained the keys of the building and took the money from the office. He afterwards called at the shop of Mr Wm. Evano, and hited a. bicycle for half a day, paying 2s 6d. He rode to Conway, where he sold the bicycle for 2s 9d. He returned "to Bangor on July 27th, aisd when arrested admitted both charges. Evidence was given by Owen Eiias Jones, 19, Park-hill, that, the defendant took the keys with him, and the premises had to be forced epe-vs. P.C. Rtfterl.s (37j stated that he arm ceil the defendant at his home, and found in his posses- sion the keys of the Palace. When charged lie said: "I have nothing to eav, only that I did it. Mr Wm. Evans, cycle dealer, said that the de- fpn.dant. when ho hired the bicycle, alleged that he wanted to go to Befbesd-a to post some bills. Richard E. Price (14), Wac n-terrace, Conway, stated that lie met the defendant on the road at Conway. He told witness that he was going to Lime-street, Liverpool, "to open a Palace," and he allowed witness several keys (laughter). He also said he intended selling the bicycle he was riding, and asked witness if he had any money. Witness replied he had 2. 9d, and defendant sold the machine to him for that amount. In answer to the Mayor, Superintendent Griffith said the defendant lived with his widowed mother. The Chairman said the Bench regretted to find a lad like the defendant choosing the wrong path in life. If he would join the navy he would be bound over under the First Offenders' Act. Defendant: I am ready to join the navy at; once. Defendant was accordingly bound over. VOLUNTEER INSPECTION. I Col- Dixon, the county commandant of t.ho Carnarvonshire Volunteer Regiment, inspected he C" (Bangor) Company en Monday night. qlho company w? in charge cf Cspt. D. J. Rowlands, assisted by Capt. Sencgios, Ju.^trt. Phillips, Lieut. 11. C. Vincent, Scc.-ijieut. Reid, and Platoon Commander T. O. Jones. There were 114 Volunteers on parade. H. W. Savage was in charge of the machine-gun section, which is now provided with the Hotchkiss gain- At the close c-t the parade Col. Dixon, in addressing the company, stated thafi he was very pleased with tho progress made since his last inspection a.nd specially pra»:se-l the officers and N.C.O.'s on the way they conveyed instruction to the men. The Governmenr, ho said, had1 kept their word with the Volunteers, and it was up to them to make -heinsolvea thoroughly efficient. They wera now being supplied with all the necessary arm and equipment. As regarded uniforms, he assured them that tfieae were actu- ally being made and would bi supplied to the "A" and "B" men very shortly. In conclusion lid referred to the fact that this was tho last time for tho Menai Bridge platoon to appear C" com aiiy, and for inspection as a part of "C" Company, and while wishing them every success in their now battalion he eaid be was very lotti to part with them- Lord Most-yn. in expressing thanks to Col. Dixon, expressed a keen desire to see a large influx of "A" men (men over military age) into the company, and he specially ealibd attention to (ihe speech delivered on Friday by Field Marshal Lord French. He pointed olit that there was still a great need for Volunteers, and it was the duty of every man over military age, physically fit, to join the Volunteer force at IJl'ce in order that we might (have a,n efficient home defence army. In conclusion his lordship stated tbat he hoped to make aqraiitgcjnents to have the first battalion in Clamp for a week as he felt that was the best way o-f making the men highly efficient. Capt. R owlands took tho opportunity of ex- pressing the regret he felt at parting company wirii tho Menai Bridgo platoon, who were now becoming No. 1 platoon of the A" Coiy. of the Anglesey Volunteer Regiment. Seno^les responded witih a short speech expressing 1ms appreciation of the cordial relationship that ha.d always existed b3.- tween the Bangor and Menai Bridge platoons in the" C" Coy- LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. I COUNTY THEATRE. J A stern tight tor the possession of a precious etone is the story Unfolded by "The Oval Dia- mond" shown during the first half of the week. For the second portion of the week there is "The Flying Twins," a circus tale crammed with incident, and whicll fea t me" the Thauhciiser Twins. IDs-tony lias a knack of repeating itself. Each succeeding (generation has it-3 own peculiar diffi- culties and its own problem^ to solve. And. yet if these are subjected to the analytical process it will bo found that, they have, much in corn. mon. Generation succeeds generation, and man- ners and customs change, bet hltnlUn nature re- mains the same. This ia the key-note of that extraordinarily auccessftii and fascinating play, "Milestones," which, .in its- screen form, is the holiday attraction billed fof thE, fir-t half of the week here. On it-s first visit t.o Bangor the play attracted an unusual amount of attention, not beoause of its story, nor even beoaiuso of iie Qhara{'ter:œrion+iich, by the way, is singularly cilever-bur, chL-fly on account of the understand- ing which it display^ of tho weaknesses and frailtio^ of human nature amid the changes and chances of modern progress. Its story is tho fetorv of the lives of threw people and their attitude to passing- events. Its key-note is tho old tag, which at one time passed muster as a sound axiom, that, wiha-t was good enough for rtiv father h good enough for me." "Milestones" is a great .moial lesson, a.nd at no time in the history of tho Brit.ish Empire was its teaohiittj more badly needed than ifc is to-day. Because of its excellent teaching and its understanding of human nature, the appear- ance of tho play in a form that will rencier it accessible to the great majority of pb is wel- comed. There are touches about this production that are akin to genius, meri- flashes th'jy may tx, suoh, for instance, as the launch of a great battle ship at which Queen Victoria presided, tho ap- pearance in the streets of a. genuine old omni- bus of. the knifeboard pattern, and the passing of Charles Dickens among a crowd in the &treet. The wonder and admirat.-oti ot each paeeing age is emphasised by the advent of the hansom cab, the typewriter, the telephone, tha gramopJsone. The old argument that the photographic qua- lity of British pictures is not always what it might be certainly does not apply in this case, for more oonsistenfcliy good wore, from a tech- nical standpoint, has never been screened. One cannot close a notice of go memorable a picture without, an appreciative reference to t."o ic-- sponsible for selecting tho musical part of the show. A fihn adaptation of Sullivan's "Lost Chord" will be the attraction for the second half of the week. THE PICTUREDROME. I I Gretna Green," the billtopp&r for the firet ,hulf of the week, featured ftlie3 Marguerite Clarke. For the week-end there is Edward Abie's fine drama, "Ready Money," in four parts. This is a picture which on no accotuit should be missed, for its tells a striking story in a very dramatic manner. The seventh episode of the serial, "Laughing Mask," wRl a bo be included in tlie programme. A fine collection of pictures has been arranged for next week, leading off on Monday with Dr. Poster's Dilemma." with Miss Kathleen Williams in a leading role. There will be a holiday progra.mme suitable for all tastes, and with a good leavening of humour. For Thursday and the two following evenings, the stax attraction will be "Money Talks," a Selig masterpiece. There will be a matinee eaoh day at 2.30 p.m. THE PALACE. I Tlireo performances have been arranged for Monday, at 2.30 p.m., 6.15 p.m., and 8.10 "p-™ and on Tuesday at 2.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. On other evenings the o hovvs will commence at 8 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. In addition to the pictures, which will include Char- lie Chaplin in "Burglars," a number of turns will appear, including Hamlin and Jackson, Zar-i- rilia, Walton Duo, and Mark Note.
