I A FARMER AND THE SALE OF SEED I POTATOES. 1 I At Carnarvon, on Monday, a prosecution took p!aoe under tho Food Control Order of the 2ith February, Rice Roberts, of Peny- bryn Farm, being summoned for selling seed potatoos al. a nricd exceeding the authori-xd price. The person to whom the potatoes were s<,ld was a working man named Henry AViI- liams, who said tlu,t ho paid 4d a pound. for them. Tho sale took place at the Market Hall. T'ho defeniant admitted the ste. lie explained that he had been selling since the beginning of February, but he had only charged what other peoplo charged. He had also seen a copy of the Order, which, how- ever, made no distinction between the price oi eai-i,, potatoes and that of late potatoes. Supt. Wiiiianis, who prosecuted, pointed out the maximum price allowed for early po- tatoes was 3d per lb. In this ca&o the de- fendant was hi» own grower, and the pota- toes sold wore bought by him last year for N. Tho defendant asserted that he followed the prices ruling in the Market Hall, but, unfor- tunately, the notice put up there contained ■ no reference to potatoes, and, as a matter of fact, no one asked him to sell for 3d. per lb. DIED IN AMERICA.-I,lr -tnd Mrs Hugh Owen, Cefn Farm, have received intimation of the death in America of Mrs Owen, tho wife of their oldest son, Mr Llewelyn H. Pwen. Deceased, who leaves a widower and two young children, was a native of Plati Penmynydd, Anglesey, and -emigrated eomo years ago. OBITUARY. Following an op-eratio-n for appendicitis, at the Carnarvonshire and An- gi^ey Infirmary, the death took place of Mr Joseph Jones, fourth son of Mr Joseph Jones, Caeiglas. Two of his brothers are now serving wiUi H.M. Forces in France, and the third is an engineer in the R.N. lie also was- very anxious to. attain his eighteenth year to join the forces, but was cut down ero he reached it. Deoeased was oduoated at Friars School, Bangor, and was admitted as clerk to Lloyds Bank, Penmaenmawr, and later transferred to the Carnarvon Branch. He was a young man of exceptional character, greatly admired by all who knew him. A large gj the nag came to pay their last tri- bute of icspect to him last Thursday, when his body was laid to rest in LlanddeinioJen Churchyard. The Church Choir, of which he had been a member, attended, and were assisted by members of the Welsh Choir. The service at the house was conducted by thiF Rev. Evan Jones, curate of Portdinorwic, and the Rev. B. Thomas, rector of Lian- odona, whilst in the Church and by the oraveside, the Rev. R. Wynne-Griffith, Pem- lsa'rwaen, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Evan Jor.cs, Rev. B. Thomas, rector of Llan- adona, aad the Rev. L. Jenkins, Llanberis. The service throughout was fully choral, and Mrs George Outram, who presided at the or- gan, played the "Dead March." Wreaths wore sent' by the following: Port Church Sunday School, the Staff of Lloyds Bank, Carnarvon; Mr and Mrs Mortimer Jonos, Lioyis Bank, Portdinorwic; Mr and Mrs Weaver, Vayncl Park; Mrs Evau Jones, Mona Vew; Mr Douglas Turnbull, Vaynot Park; Nurse- Salt, Carnarvonshire and Anglesey In- urmarv, Bangor; Misses Muriel and Yi ixm-Ila .L,,axis, Brynadda Miss Hujghos, Ty Tdon; MLss Laura Ellen Randall, Aber Cottage, Master Bob and Misses Martha, Sibyl and Evclyn Joces, Caeglaa. Mr Bamett (the Director of Education) replied that slates were used in many sahools, as they were much cheaper than papor at present. OOUNTY SCHOOL. At a meeting of the governors of the County School, on Monday, the Clerk (Mr Llewelyn Ovoon) reported that there was a balanco of L200 in favour at the close of the year. At the Polico Court, on Friday, John Evans, loadman, Ccrrig y Rhwydwyr, for wjhom Mr Wm. George appaared, charged -William Jones, also a roadman, with assaulting him. —Mr J. Jones Morris defended. — On the Bench were Messrs R. M. Greaves (in the chair), J. Davies, J. R. Owen, J. Lewis, and D. Fowden Jones.—Plaintiff said that on the 3rd ulto., when he was cultivating his gar- den, Jones jumped over tie fence and said, You are the mam who steals timber at night." Plaintiff denied th-o charge, and said, "I have seen you oome home at night with a pheasant in your possession." Then the defendant hit ham in the eye and felled him. He got up, and Jones hit him 'in thi other eye also, and he fell again. In tho evening he became ill, and the next day saw Dr. Pierce Jonea. lie did nothing to cause un?" assault, and. 'he was not the aggressor.— In cross-examination, plaintiff denied having to prevent Jones carry ing a bundle of fire- wood. Ho had no manure fork in his hand, nor did Jones strike .him with a tree branch until he rolled in some thotrns.—Dr. Jones said that complainant was very shaky when he camo to him. There were abrasions on his fooe and n&se, and he had al/ black eye. A fall and the rolling over thorns might have caused some of the abrasions, but tho other ir juries could not have been caused in that way. Some blunt instrument must have been used.—Mrs Evans described the state of her husband's face when she returned hoime.- The defence was that Jones had a rigi-it to 1100 the footpath referred to; that he used it :n1 the day in question, and that when com- ing down the path with a bundle of firewood Evans stood before him and held in his hand .1. manure fork. Seeing him so armed,. Jones took a tree branch and hit him with it in the back. Evains fell and rolled down tho path. Defendant denied having jumped over the fence into the plaintiff's garden. PORTMADOC AND DISTRICT WOMEN'S I INSTITUTE. On Friday, two leotures ware given, one on gardening in the afternoon and the other in the evening on cooking. Mrs Percival presided at the afternoon meeting in the Town Hall, and prefaced her introduction of Mr Turner (expert on horti- culture from Madryn College), by a pertinent and urgent appeal to all to do their utmost to help tiho present need for increased food production. Mr Turner gave practical instruction as well as information his scientific knowledge was imparted clearly and plainly. Potatoes were, so to speak hiB piece de resistance, but he gave a good lenaon also on growing other vegetables, by which many who at- leaded wiU ucafit. On examining the animal he found a raw wound aboilt the size of a two shilling piece under the saddle.
