[SIR FRANK BODWEN, BART.I
SIR FRANK BODWEN, BART. I Cyclists throughout the length and breadth of of the Empire will welcome the name of Sir Frank Bodwen, Bart., amongst the birthday hon- ours for, probably, no man has done so much to place the British bicycle in the vanguard of the world. Perhaps as much as anything is due to the fact that he is still to-dav the keenest of cylists. The story of how Frank came to be connected with the cycle is a romance of Industry. A Devonshire man, coming from a Bristol family, where his father and grandfather had been large manufacturers,—at the age of 22, he was the suc- cessful one of 107 competitors for a lucrative posit- ion in Hong Song. There the debilitating climate nearly killed him, and in 1886 he returned to Eng- land with a fortune and an apparently ruined constitution. Seeking remedies he was advised to try cycling. He took it up, his health immediately improved, he became interested in the cycle and its trade, with the result that to- day he is the head and sole proprietor With his only son Mr. Harold Bowden, of the Raleigh Cycle Co. Ltd., the largest cycle manufacturing firm in the world, employing 1700 people and turning out, be. fore the war, over 60,000 high-grade bicycles per annum. In 1879 Sir Frank, then of course plain Mr." married Miss Minnie Houston, daughter of Col. Alexander Houston, one of the pioneers or San Francisco, where lady Bowden was one of the belles of the city. Sir Frank has other connectons with America, being the osly brother of Mrs. W. T. Gardener, of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. Charles P. Righall,of Lockport, New York fetate. Sir Frank has taken his bicycle to some of the furthest parts of the earth, including the Sahara Desert and the most outlandish parts of Syria, and has toured extensively in such places as the States, Canada, and all the Continent. At home he still rides every day to and from his great works at Nottingham and takes every opportuni- ty to get away for a cycling holiday. Undoubted- ly it is this close persnnal interest in the pastime which has had no little to do with the devlopment of the all-steel Raleigh, and the unique position it holds among bicycles. It is a case of a practical head providing a practical article. ■ Some years years ago, in recognition of. his world-wide travels, Sir Frank Bowden was made a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, while for some years he had been a Justice of the Peace for Nottingham. In politics he is an Imperialist placing the Emptre before any question of party, and on the outbreak of war he and his son placed the whole resources of their great works atN ott. ingham at the command of the Government for the supply of munitions of war, on the production of which they have since been largely engage. •
RESULTS TELL.I
RESULTS TELL. I THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT ABOUT THE I RESULTS IN LLANGOLLEN. Results to tell the tale. All doubt is removed. The testimony of a neighbour can be easily investigated. What better proof can be had? Mrs. E. Davies, of Myrtle Cottage, Brook-street Llangollen, says :—" I was troubled very muoh at one time with backache. The pains were very sharp at times, and I could hardly straighten my- self after bending. I had attacks of headaohe and dizziness, and other symptons pointed to kidney disorder. I was advised .to try Doan's backache kidney pills, and they proved to be very effeotive. They took all the pains away, brightened me up, and since then I have been splendid. I shall always praioe Doan's pills, for the benefit I had from them. (Signed) E. Davies." Doan's backache kidney pills relieve the kid- neys and bladder like ordinary medicines relieve the bowels. They drive out the uric acid which is the great cause of backache, rheumatism, and lumbago, and they release the accumulated water in cases of dropsy and retention. They are per- fectly safe to use in all circumstances, and a certificate of purity accompanies every box. Price 2/9 a box, 6 boxes 13/9; of all dealers, or from Foster-McClellan Co., 8, Wells-street, Oxford-street, London, W. Don't ask for backache and kidney pills—ask distinctly for Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, the same as Mrs. Davies had. 1
4I WELSH COLLEGES AND THE…
4 I WELSH COLLEGES AND THE WAIR. 1, RESPONSE OF STUDENTS. I Statistics now available show that the response of the Welsh Colleges to the nation's call in con- nection with the war has been relatively equal to, and in some cases in excess of, that of any part of the kingdom. The North Wales University at Bangor has seven members of its staff serving with the boloure, four of these holding commissons, while of the students in residence at the beginning of the war, between 50 and 60 have enlisted, two- thirds of them holding commissions. The insti- tution some years "ego of an Officers' Training Corps in connection with the College contributed to the larger proportion of those holding commissions. There are now nearly a hundred students in training in this corps, and one half of these hive already applied for commissions, and at least half the remainder are expected to offer their aervicea at the close of the present academic sessipn. North Wales men outside the College have also secured commissioners through ¥, "7,;d;'r;i-Aif" :i:i'1\:i1-i:'1\r their having connccted with the College Officer & Training Corps. The other institution at Bangor, the Normal College for Elementary reachers-which is outside the university system-has two-thirds of its students in the Officers' Training Corps. Some 25 per cent of these residential students have al- ready enlisted, and a large proportion of the re- mainder are expected to do so at the close of the present session. The University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, the oldest of the three comprised within the Welsh University, has still:a larger number serving in the army, over 200 of its members having joined the colours since the beginning of tbe war. In ad- dition to these, the Officers' Training Corps in con- nection with the College has sent over a IOO officers to various branches of service. Altogether something over 300 Aberystwyth men are serving with the colours, 60 per cent of the total number holdingcommissiona. I St. David's College, Lampeter, which is not affiliated with the Welsh University for the train- /Ii ing of clergy for the Church of England, has from the first outbreak of hostilities manifested its loyal- ty. Over 40 of its students are on active service,, only seven of these being Army chaplains. The University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire has a lesser number in proportion to its roll of students serving with the colours than the other two national college-a fact which may in part be attributed to the abseno6 of an Officer's Training Corps at the College. Some 7(). of the present students are serving, 12 per cent of these holding commissions. On the other hand, Cardiff has contributed a larger number of its staff to the colours than either of the other two col- leges.
