ATTEMPTED MURDER AT NEWPORT. Cutting a Paramour's Throat.' Festivities" at a Double Marriage A shocking affair occurred in Newport late on Saturday night. A man named Joseph Leyshon, a mason by trade, living with a woman named Sarah Rees, attempted to cut her throat with a table knife, and inflicted a wound which might have speedily ended her life. The prisoner and Rees have been cohabiting together for about four years. Latterly they hi Ile, been living in rooms in a house in Constablev lane, a thoroughfare leading out of Commercial- road. This has been the scene of unwonted festivities since Friday, in consequence of two weddings taking place from it. One of these was between the daughter of a man named Hughes and a seaman, and the second between another daughter of the same man and the prisoner's brother. Leyshon himself appears to have taken a pro- minent part in the rude rejoicings. Amongst other things, a nine-gallon cask of beer was purchased, and kept on tap for all comers. On Saturday night some friends of Leyshon accompanied him out for a walk, and being desirous of smarten- ing up for the evening's proceedings, prisoner went to a barber's to get shaved. Prisoner is only 35 years of age, and probably the woman Rees grew suspicious of what his intentions might be. She accordingly followed him about, and even penetrated the hairdresser's sanctnm in search of her paramour. This conduct incensed the prisoner, and on his return home, whilst partaking of supper, he reminded her of it. He had a knife in his hand, as be was eating some bread and meat, and exclaiming, You I will kill you," he sprang up and, seizing her, drew the knife across the right side of her throat, making a cut over three inches long. The other men and women in the house at once disarmed the man and sent for medical aid. On being examined the wound was found to be of a superficial nature, no artery having been severed. Prisoner was given into custody, and will be charged at the police-court-to-day with attempt- ing to murder the woman.
