-"i I The French in China. ANOTHER GREAT BATTLE. I Six Thousand Chinese Defeated. Resignation of the French War Minister. I [CENTRAL NEWS TELEGRAM.] PARIS, Sunday Afternoon.—An omcial tele- gram has just been received at the Ministry of Marine from General Negrier, to the effect that that general had succeeded in defeating 6,000 Chinese, who were encamped a day's journey from Chu. No further details are added. PARIS, Sunday, 4 p.m.—The resignation of General Campenon, Minister of War, is new un fait accompli. For some long time past this event has been talked of and hinted at, but up to the present nothing definite had occurred. Now, however, it is well known that the general has resigned his portfolio, and I am in a position to state that not only has M. Ferry accepted his late minister's resignation, but has offered the vacant post to General Lewal, who has accepted the position. I am also credibly informed that the new minister judges it to be of the highest importance that a rapid and complete occupation of Tonqnin should be at once effected as far as the Chinese frontier. I am also assured that the new reinforcements which it is intended to send out will not exceed 6,000 men, if as much. [REUTER'S TELEGRAM. I PARIS, Sunday.—Several of to-day's papers itate that the management of the operations in Tonquin, which up to the present has been in the hands of the Ministry of Marine, will now be transferred to the Ministry of War. The Temps says that General Lewal is of opinion that the reinforcements already despatched to Tonquin will be sufficient to ensure the conquest of that country. A rumour is current that M. Cavaig- nac, deputy for Sarthe, will replace M. Casimir Perier as Under-Secretary for War.
