The announcement of subscriptions in response to Major-general Lee s recent appeal has been held over until to-day lest in the stress and preoccupation of the General Elec- tion this most important work for the City of Cardiff should not have received the atten- tion it merits. It may be well to repeat that the objects of the fund are(1) To liquidate the debt of the Cardiff Infirmary, which would mean an addition to the revenue of that Institu- tion of at least CBOO a year; and (2) to add a handsome sum to its invested capital so that persistent appeals may be avoided for the up-keep of the Hospital. It is hopea by the "c.'omplHhment of these most desirable ends His Majesty the King would give his consent to re-name the Hospital King Edward VII 3 Hospital, Cardiff. The response has been quick and generous, as the undermentioned list testifies, and many people have written commending the practical nature of the memorial. That there is nothing theoretical about it may be judged from the fact that there are 750 patients waiting for admission to the Cardiff In- firmary. and it will largely depend upon the amount received as to whether the magnifi- cent pila of buildings now almost completed, and popularly known as the "New Wing," will be placed at their disposal. We believe that if the urgent need for these additional beds were only realised the money would be speedily forthcoming. The neces- sity would certainly be obvious to those who have themselves experienced the depression and anxiety, quite apart from incidental pain, inseparable to/the expectancy of a sur- gical operation. Some of these poor people have to wait for six or eight months, and little children for two years! £ s. d.
