THE WRECK ON RAMSEY I -1 ISLAND. HOPELESS POSITION OF THE I SZENT ISTVAN. The large Austrian steamer Szent Istivan, belonging to the Royal Hungarian Sea Navigation Company, which went ashore near St. David's on Monday in a denee fog, lies in a very dangerous position, and the prospect of saving her is hopeless. On Tuesday afternoon Captain Kertizza., the chief officer, Mr. Holt (of Cardiff, who represents the ship), the manager of Ghenhall's Ocxrnish Salvage Oompa.ny, Mr. Hill (receiver of wrecks, Ney- land), and Mr. Hunt (chief coastguard! went out to Ramsey Island in order to ascertain the position of the vessel ajid the prospects of salving operations being successful. They found that the steamer is submerged at low water 20ft., the after part of the bridge to the stem being visible at low tide. They oon- sider the salvage of the ship hopeless, owing to her exposed position. The bridge and cabin fittings a.nd wheeihouee are being waahed away. If fine wea-ther prevails it is probable that some of the cargo, which con- sists principally of flour, phosphate, mineral water, amd manganese, will be salved. The Cornish Salvage Company's twoealvage boats are standing by at Mitford with pumps capable of lifting 4,000 tons per hour, and will probalbly visit the wreck to-day should the ground swell oease. The wreckage, oon- sisting principally of mineral water boxes, is coming ashore intact. Nine of the crew, who made an unsuccess- ful attempt to visit the ship to procure their clothing, had a miraculous escape from drowning, owing to not being experienced with the tides and strong currents. The scene of the wrecil is a treacherous one, as hidden rocks are studded around. Their boat got swamped, and with much difficulty they climbed on a rook and shooted for assistance, which was forthcoming, as their peril had been noticed by a boat near by, and they were safely landed. The cargo is a very valuable one. The orew still remain at St. David's, and are being well oared for.
