FIRST THOUGHTS. I The Dawning of the New Era. "THEY WILL COME IN THEIR THOUSANDS" For the" Real Happiness" of a 1, Religion of Joy." I [By BRINLEY R. JONES.] I Picture to yourself a small room in a small cottage on the shores of the Loughor river. It is a dark Sabbath day in autumn, with a threat of approaching winter in it. The sky is sullen grey, and so feeble is the light that comes through the window that the large lamp that usually adorns the dresser is placed on the table and lit. The room is scrupu- lously clean, and at a glance you per- ceive that it is the sanctum of one who loves books. There they are-piled up everywhere, in picturesque confusion. All of them bear marks of use, and espe- cially one of them-a Bible. Walking rapidly up and down the room in a fever of restlessness is a young man, in the prime of life. He is labouring under some excitement, which palpitates in every fibre of his tall, athletic figure. Wild words fall from his lips at irregular intervals.—words of burning fervour that speak of a fevered mind impatient of the despotism of the flesh. They are inco- herent utterances, broken by sobs of passion, but there are no tears; and, strangest thing of all, while the man is sobbing his pale face is illumined by a glow of sunny happiness that seems to accord but ill with the poignant struggle that is going on in his inner nature. He reminds one of some noble animal, an unwilling prisoner within the iron bars of a cage. His expressive face is white and haggard, and dark lines around the eyes speak of nightly vigils. It is the end of a memorable week in his history, and I am told that his bed has not been slept in for three nights, while his meals have gone untasted. I am puzzled to account for this trans- formation in the man whom I had known I some months previously as a collier, earning a laborious livelihood at the mine hard by. For, surely, no collier spoke as he did. What does he say?- A movement has commenced which will change the face of the country. Old things are become new. The people are to receive a Gospel of joy from the Holy Spirit. No man can tell where this will end! The speaker is Evan Roberts. His subject the Revival, then commencing at Loughor, and his audience is a journalist. Since then he has had larger audiences and received many journalists. I plead guilty to a secret satisfaction that I was the first. It is always interesting to trace great movements to their source, to turn one's back upon the broad river in order to contemplate the head of the Ganges." So far as Evan Roberts is concerned, I suppose one ought to begin, not at Jeru- salem, but at Blaenanerch. That famous Cardiganshire chapel saw him break the bonds in which he had been struggling for thirteen yeara and burst forth into an exuLtant song of praise at his release. From that moment he devoted himself to the new work to which he had thus been called, and, like the bird returning to its nest, he came to his beloved native Loughor, there to commence a series of meetings which will live in history. There was no anticipatory flourish of trumpets; all that happened was that Evan Roberts went to a prayer meeting at Moriah, which commenced at seven o'clock. It was attended by a faithful few, and next morning the good folk of Loughor were scandalised to hear that the gathering did not break up until the early hours of that day. The following evening the same thing happened, and so it went on for a week. By this time the fame of the meetings had spread abroad, and the chapel was crowded. What has happened since I need not describe. Looking back upon my interview with the missioner, I am free to confess that I listened to his rhapsodies with scep- ticism. Here was an unknown collier, who had left the mine in order to pre- pare himself for the work of the minis- try. The ministerial student is a familiar figure in South Wales. I had listened to scores of them from time to time. A young man with leanings towards religion is taken from the plough or the forge, and is entered for college. He follows a course of education, And some years later receives a "call" and becomes the pastor of a village Bethel. Of this Loughor collier I had heard excellent accounts. "From his youth upwards" he was known as a lover of the Bible and a man of exemplary character. He would make a good preacher and an excellent pastor, and would adorn the religion which he pro- fessed by living a blameless life. This! was what his friends expected of Evan Roberts, and many of them, with the best intentions in the world, found fault with him beoause, instead of pursuing his studies at Newcastle-Emlyn, he had; broken them off in order to conduct these meetings. My scepticism, however, was tempered -by a conviction of the terrible earnest- ness of the man. Even now I can re-call the thrill which passed through me as he spoke of the Wales that was to be—; a land given to that righteousness that doth exalt a nation. His eyes blazed as h* described men and women, conscience- j stricken, turning to the God whom they had forgotten 'and seeking pardon. "They will come in their thousands," h« said; the Holy Spirit has pro- mised it, and it is bound to be. There is to be happiness in the country—the real happiness that comes from a religion of joy. Look at the people -now they are not happy. Some of them think they are, but they are not. Only the Spirit can make them happy, and He is going to do so now." "They Will Come in Their Thousands," I said Evan Roberts, and I was sceptical. But it has been fulfilled to the letter. Sydney Smith used to say that his constant endeavour was to give his parishioners cheerful ideas about re- ligion to teach them that God was not a jealous, merciless tyrant; that He was best served not by eternal apprehensions, but by a regular tenour of good actions. This is also the Gospel according to Evan Roberts. The man was radiant with; happiness. His was a very ecstacy of joy. the infection of which was caught; by all with whom he came in contact. j And yet he was no mere visionary, wrap- ping himself in a mantle of self-righteous-, Her. EVAN PHILLIPS. I ness. Happy himself, his concern was that the people should share that happi- ness, and thus his enthusiasm was conse- crated on the altar of service. Herein, one imagines, is to be found the secret of the man's power over others. No one can calculate," sayis an old writer, "how much a man may effect who throws his whole heart into a thing." The religious enthusiasm which drove the Pillar Saints into the austerities of monastic life, which made pious devotees of Rome seclude themselves from the world, and surrounded the Puri- tans with an atmosphere of oppressive gloom, has exercised a very different effect- upon the Loughor Revivalist. It is recorded of Cromwell that his religion became aim out a disease of the imagina- tion, and that in his frequent fits of melancholy he used to send during the night for the village physician that he might talk to him of ;his doubts and terrors. There is none of this in Evan Roberts. He, too, had his time of doubt, but that is passed. » "For thirteen years," he said, "I prayed for the Holy Spirit to come. I struggled, and wrestled, and prayed, land now He has come. He has made a new man of me, and I want the people of Wales to be made anew also." The history of all religious Revivals is much the same. Great convulsions in nature are accompanied by violent upheavals of the earth's surface, and it is not surprising, therefore, if the present movement is attended by a thorough shaking of the dry bones of conven- tionality. The scene of ecstatic excite- ment witnessed at the early meetings at Loughor came as a rude shock to those who have taken their religion with a dull decorum, the monotony of which nothing was allowed to vary. In this connection I re-call the ominous shakings of the head with which the new order of things was greeted by a dear old deacon well known in the Loughor district. I- Something ought to be done to stop these crcts' of boys going on like this," he said. I was at the meeting last night, and there they were laugh- ing and singing and crying-like a lot of hysterical women." I wonder what the old deacon thinks to-day. In his history of Methodism Stevens gives a graphic account of some of the remarkable physical effects that accom- panied the preaching of Wesley and Whitefield. Just now this has a peculiar interest for the people of South Wales, who have become accustomed to exactly similar happenings. The rnofft singular fact was that for a time the superior ardour and eloquence of Whitefield did not produce them, while under the calmer and more logical preaching of Wesley people dropped on every side as if thunder-struck. Wesley made a special investigation of the remarkable effects produced at New- castle. He found, first, that all persons who had been thus affected were in per- fect health, and had not been subject to convulsions of any kind. Secondly, that these new affections ha.d come upon them in a moment, without any previous notice, while they were either hearing the preaching or thinking on what they had heard. Thirdly, that they usually dropped down, loot their strength, and were seized with violent pain. Their feelings they described differently. Some said they felt as if a sword was running through them others thought a. great weight lay upon t'hem. "lean no more," said Wesley, attribute them to a natural cause than to the Spirit of God."

THE REVIVAL HYMNSI Life Stories of the Writers. When so many of the finest of the Welsh hymns are pressed into the service of the Revival, it is not unfitting that one of the most beautiful of English hymns should be used frequently and with fervour in the same good work. We refer, of course, to Lead, Kindly Light," which the learned editor of the "Dictionary of Hymnology" rightly terms an exquisite lyric, and which to many people has all the beauty and sweetness and depth and virtue of one of the Psalms of David. Had the late Cardinal Newman given to mankind nothing but this beautiful hymn he would not have lived in vain. Yet that he was a great poet his "Dream of Gerontius bears the amplest testimony, whilst as a preacher and a dialectician he THE LATE CARDINAL NEWMAiV. has probably had few equals in the long roll of illustrious Englishmen. John Henry Newman was born in the first year of the nineteenth century, and was the descendant on his mother's side of an ancestry of Huguenots. His up- bringing was strictly religious. Proceed- ing to Oxford, he had a distinguished collegiate career, and was appointed vicar of the historic church of St. Mary's. Then came the gradual change in his religious principles which made him the leader of the Oxford Movement, and finally resulted in his admission to the Church of Rome. This was in 1845. Later on Father Newman founded the Oratory at Edgbaston, and there he spent the remainder of his tranquil and beautiful life, departing to where the" angel faces smile" in Aunust, 1890. Eleven years earlier the Pope had made him a cardinal, and he retained the love and veneration of the English people to the last. Although Newman died a Roman Catholic, he had not crossed the ecclesiastical Rubicon when he com- posed his famous hymn. His mind had not found rest—he was struggling) amid the mists and shadows of religious unsettlement. This was in 1832, when he chanced to visit Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. In his wonderful Apologia he writes simply, We were becalmed a whole week in the Straits of Bonifacio. Then it was that I wrote the lines, Lead, Kindly Light," which have since become well known." The various sentiments in this lovely hymn have given rise to much controversy, but I when we recollect the circumstances amid which it was written- all uncertainty vanishes and every sentence and senti- ment takes its natural place. Pestered by the curious to give an account of the hymn, Dr. Newman, in his old age, wrote a characteristic answer in the columns of the Guardian" plead- ing—with K,-ble that he was not bound to remember his own meaning, whatever it was, at the end of fifty years. Several persons have taken liberties with "Lead, Kindly Light," altering words and even adding a whole verse! This last was perpetrated by Bishop Bickersteth, with the best intentions, no doubt, but it is a poor effort, and the sooner it is forgotten the better. Happily the correct text of "Lead, Kindly Light," is now so well known that it is safe from any further tampering. Whilst the hymn is so familiar in Protestant Christendom, we believe it is seldom—if ever-heard in Roman Catholic services.

REMARKABLE DIARY. Mr. Evan Roberts' Seven Day Silence. STORY OF THE PERIOD TOLDI BY HIMSELF. Engagements for the Future. GREAT DESIRE TO VISIT THE HOLY LAND. ["BY "AWSTIN. "] The seven days' silence observed by Mr. Evan Roberts at Godre'r Coed, Neath. having expired, I am in a position to tell authorita- tively the main outlines of the interesting story of the silent room. I had a long con- versation on Thursday with Mr. Evan Roberts. and was given unrestricted access to the daily memoranda which he made during the test period." But before telling it. partly in Welsh and partly in English as I think the points can be best oonveyed, it will be well to say that although anxious to meet the evangelist, whom I had not seen for exactly a fortnight, I knew him well enough not to attempt to- approach him during the seven days' silence. On Thursday, however, I made my way to Neath by an early train, and, on arriving at Godre'r Coed was kindly received by Mr. and Mrs. Rhys Jones, who informed me that the silence had that morning been broken, that Mr. Evan Roberts had emerged from the seclusion of his room and cordially greeted first Mr. Jones and then Mrs. Jones; that Mies Annie Davies had subsequently arrived at Godre'r Coed and had a few words' con- versation with him, and that I was the next to see him. It had. said Mr. Jones, been an anxious week for them, and they were glad that the termination of the ordeal had come. A few moments later I was ushered into the room, and a simultaneous "I am very glad to see you" from both of us while we heartily shook hands showed that the silence had been, and was being, broken. "It has been a difficnlt-a hard—week," said Mr. Flvan Roberts, "not one word with anyone for a whole week, but I felt it had to be gone through." ile seemed cheerful, but certainly showed signs of the nervous strain which, he has sustained during the past four months, and the strain of the past seven days, to a man who undoubtedly feels certain that he was obeying a Divine command and learning the lesson of implicit obedience, must have been very great. The Beginning of the Silence. "Could you go over the incidents that led to the silence?" I asked. After a few moments' pause, Mr. Evan Roberta said: "Ye5. I will tell yon now. On the evening of last Wednesday week, I was getting ready to go to the service a<Briton Ferry. I had my overcoat on. my gloves in my hand. and my hat on my head, when a voice said. 'Don't go.' I ought to have told you that before that, before I came downstairs, while I was washing a voice had said in Welsh.. Paid myn'd i Briton Ferry' (' Don't go to Briton Ferry'), and then, when I got down to the passage, as I have told you, the voice said, 'Don't go.' We were all ready then, and Mr. Ma-rdy Davies was here. Then I felt some pressure (a burden) on my soul. I went back into the room, sat on a chair, and wag compelled to pray for the salvation of souls. Then came a second outburst, a greater burden than the other, a.nd I was compelled to go on my kneee in great agony of soul. The voice continued to say, Don't go to-night.' Then I tried to convey the message to Mr. Mardy Davies, but I failed. so I was compelled to write it down, About that time a vodoe srwid, You are to foe silent for seven days.' First Day Continuing to clucae from the book, Mr. Evan Roberts read: — On the Tuesday, at 4.22 p.m., I asked the Lord for a message, and received the answer, "Isaiah, liv., 10." A voice spoke plainly in English and Welsh. It was not an impression, but a voice. There was at this time a struggle going on in my mind as to what the people would say to this. Second Day On the second day it is noted:— Referring to the first day's silence, my experience of the first day was Genesis i., 2—"Darkness was upon the face of the deep." But, praise His Holy name, the Spirit of the Lord moved upon the faoe of the waters. On the second day God has given a command, "Let there be light. lot there be light; light has come into my soul, but this perpetual watching fills my sky with dark clouds—hovering and weary on their way to the West-a seven days' "All Hail the Power of Jesu's Name." journey. It is always a seven days' journey to perpetual rest. Life is only a seven days' journey. I cannot read my Bible properly, for while I read I may see some wonder, and just then give a word of acclamation, and thus rob tibds eitence of its strenigth, for silence is a mighty weapon. I would prefer being like Ezekiel, unable to speak. If I were unable to speak there would be no need for this watching. Yet possibly the lesson intended to be taught is to be watch- ful. I must teach myself to say with my I beloved Jesus, "Thy will be done." I Third Day I 11.30 third day --Saturday. A wave of joy into my heart to-day about 11.30—the sound of the name of "Jesus. Jesus, uttered in my ear came to me, and I was ready to jump for joy, and I thought He is enough for me, enough for all men- enough for all to all eternity. On this third day I was commanded not to read my Bible—the day would have been easier for me otherwise. "A caller from Australia sent in a letter," said Mr. Roberts to me, "and this is one item of what I wroite on the back of the letter, which I returned to him." (And he again referred me to the book.) Send your prayers to Heaven as direct as you send this (letter) to me, and God will answer imme- diately." Upon looking at the hook I noticed that, besides this item Mr. Roberts had written I on the latter twelve questions bearing upon prayer. On another page of the book Mr. Evan Roberts had written—"Let my conversa- tion be such as could be printed and read by the public without raising a blush upon my cheek. Live a practical life-a life of faith, so that if I leave Wales without a. penny in my pocket I shall be S'Uigfled. Reverting to the conversation with regard to the first day's silence, Mr. Roberts said:—"On the margin of a newspaper which was tear- stained I wrote to say that my tongue was tied, and that I should not speak. When. I was left alone the Spirit sadd, 'Now, watch, and don't utter a word.' I was afraid, but found out on retiring to my room that it was not want of power to speak on my part that prevented me speaking, so that it was evident that it waa intended to be a lesson to me in obedience." Then, coming back to the diary, InOltiood a. memo. to this offoot- -"Third lesson. Speak, Lord, in such a way th--lit I may differentiate Thy voice from the conning of the Evil One." I then asked him what this meant, and he said that it was a thought which he had written down after meditating upon the bare possibility of listening to tbo voice of the Evil One instead of that of God. I Fourth Day I I A Sunday thought, which I must note in passing, was this: 6.20 pm., Sunday.—Paid ag aros nes myn'd Ïr nefoedd cyn deohreu eanmol y gwaed. Nis gall canmoliaetih. o'r gwead yn y Nef ddwyn un emakl i'w dderbyn. Mae eanmol yn deilwng. TRANSLATION: 6.30 a.m. Wait not until t.nou goest now Heaven before beginning to praise t,he Blood. To praise the Blood in Heaven cannot bring any 0000 soul to accept it. To praise is worthy-if thou canst by singing the praise of Jesus on earth bring but one soul to accept Him it will be a greater thing than all the praise beyond the grave to eternity. Referring a,gain to the diary, I remarked that here was. I presumed, another thought jotted down a-s the days wore on. "Fourth day. I am going to be what God wants me to be." Mr. Evan Roberts said, Yes." I Fifth Day I On the fifth. dfi,v was this note, wbdoh. clearly indicatps the burden which the silence entailed upon the evll- gel igst- -"T<)e) tired to write." Later on were these not, Yr wyf wedi bod yn agos iawn at Dduw y prydnawn hwn—mor a-gos nes chwysu. I TRANSLATION: "I have been very near to God this after- noon—so near as to make me sweat." "I must take great care, first, to do all that God saya—onminands and that only. Moses lost himself here-f!t ruck the rock. Second, to take every matter, however in- significant. to God in prayer. Joshua lost himself here; he made a covenant with the Gibeonites, who pretended that they lived in a far-off country, while they wer.9 living close at hand. Third, to give obedience to the Holy Spirit. Fourth, to give all the glory to Him." Mr. Evan Roberts explained to me that the underlining of the word "all" in the last sentence was emphatic. He had drawn three limes unde-r dle word. and a vodce told him to put a fourth. And he put it. Then came this entry on the book: "Here am I, an empty vessel; take me, Lord!" And following this was the expression of a desire to go to Palestine, and I give it because the same book contains a striking sequel to it: — "I want to go to Palestine," it read. "If it is the Lord's will, I shall go. I should like to go ere long, j lift to use my expe- riences afterwards to draw people to the foot of the Cross. I should like to walk on the lopes of Calvary, and while there think of the Blessed Saviour while He wended His way with heavy-laden steps to its summit." The next item in the diary was in Welsh: 9.37.-Y mae ohwant arnaf wa-eddi "Three cheers i'r lesu," neu iel y can odd "Tudno": "Gac>af ar bwnc net a byd, A Dwyfol Arwr deufyd." TRANSLATION: 9-57. I have a radnd to shout Threo cheers for Jesus," or, as "Tudno" (a noted Welsh bard) 8ang- Of Heaven and earth, the topic now I sing, The Godlike Man of this world and the next." I Sixth Day Then come more memoranda, and among these the sequel to the Palestine wish—" Sixth day. You remember I said I would like to go to Palestine. Yes. Well, you know I said that I should have no money to go. well, lady has written me to-day offering to give me JE30 towards 'one of the delightful' trips' to Palestine! Diolch!" 6.52 p.m.-Voice: Mae ffydd y bobl yn oael ei phrofi yn gymannt a'th ffydd di. Oni chedwais i di am bed-war mis ar y t pinwl, ae yn ngwydd yr boll fyd? TRANSLATION: 6.52 a.m. A Vodoe: The faith of the people is being proved as much as thine own. Did I not sustain thee during your months on the pinnacle, in sight of the whole world? If sustain thee I could in public, is my power less to sustain thee in private? If I sustained thee during four months, can I not sustain thee for seven days? 5.21.—Voice: Take thy pen and write-- Lo. I am the Lord, Who bath lifted thee up from the depth. I have sustained thee thus far. Lift up thine eyes and look on the fields, and, behold, they are white. Shall I suffer thee to spread a table before Mine enemies? As I live, saith the Lord, the windows of heaven shall be opened and the rain shall come down on the parched I earth. With flowers the wilderness shall yet be decked, and the meadowland shall be the habitation of kings. The ground shall sprout and blossom in its fulness, and the heaven shall look down with laughter I upon the hidden riches of the earth, yield- ing glory unto God. Open thine hand, and I will fill it with power. Open thy mouth, and I will fill it with wisdom. Open thine heart-, and I will fill it with love. Look towards the west, and call thousands; towards the south, and say "Come"; towards the north, and say, "Draw nigh." Look towards the east, towards the cast, towards the east, and say, "Let the sun arise and shed forth its warmth. Let life spring up. Let the nations which have rejected My name live." To kings turn thy- self and say, Bend." To knights, Submit ye." To the priests, Deal out judgment, pity, forgiveness." Ye islands, seas, and kingdoms, give ear unto Me, I am the Almighty. Shall "I lift My rod over you? Did I not swear by the prophet Isaiah:" I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return. That unio Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear" ?-Isa"a xlv., 23. Seventh Day "Seventh day."—Under this beading the memorandum is:- 5.17.-At my table, tears in my eyes. Why? I have just been opening my heart to my Master, and said that I am only a worker in his fields, doing my best, while others working for the same Master leave His work to come to hinder me. [This refers, so he explained to me, to some of the oritAcal and sarcastic letters which he receives now and again.] I asked my dear Master to protect nae. I want to work for my Saviour. Why cannot we have the millions for Him? He died to save, millions. How many can I bring to Him? I feel much stronger now God hat3 answered my prayer. Breaking of the Silence Then, coming to the breaking of the silence, Mr Evan Roberts said that the first word uttered was not to any human being, but to God. "I was first commanded to rise from bed. (Cyfod o'r gwely.) Bend thy knees. (Plyg dy liniau.) Open thy lips and pray. (Agor dy enau a gweoddia.) The first yords I uttered were: 'Derbyn ft' ('Accept me')." "Then when I got out of the room," con- tinued Mr. Roberts, I saw Mr. Jones, my host, and we greeted each other very cor- dially. Then I met and spoke to Mrs. Jones, and a little while afterwards Annie Davies a,rrived. and I had a few words oonversa- tion with her. Then you came." j REVIVAL TROPHIES. -0 Misery and New-found Happiness I u AN OLD LLWYNYPIA PLAYER Get the fire!" has been the cry eent over the Channel with all the fervour tha.t the Welsh as a nation are capa-ble of, and. though slower-blooded than their near neigh- bours, the Bristol people have taken it up, and now are re-echoing it far and near. Several weeks ago, in faith and hope, a seven days mission on Revival lines was inaugu- rated at Bedmanster, a mining suburb, but ,the harvest was beyond an expectation, and still are the reapers at work. It is hard to pick out any individual case of conversion—they are all remarka.bl-but. one of the prettiest stories is that of how acceptance of Christ by a sweet little girl resulted in her parents being also brought in. Such a story was given to our representa- tive at the conclusion of a splendid meeting. when he was introduced to Mr. Albert Wil- liams, an engineer, formerly of Tonypandy, his wife, and little Mis." Beatrice, his fifteen- year-old daughter. With a. happy counte- nance, the husband told me their ctory:- thoughttihiait I was a.<?buri<stia<n," liesaid, "I never did any one any harm, a.nd lived a. very ordinary life. I used to go to libraries  %it tb?re for hours r?ii?. but I could not be happy there, and I would read .? home, but felt inward diesatisfaction- seemingly without cause. Thinking that the companionship found in the Y. M. C. A. might help me to find peaee, I paid for my membership, but I felt I could not go there. and after a few days my visits ceased. I had seen all the sights of Bristol, and so had my wife; so we had nowhere in parti- cular to go, and did not know whao to do. I was a member of the Church of England, and many years ago a choir-bov at St. Mary's Church. Cardiff; but latterly I had not attended church very much. "Since coming to Bristol about a year ago we have gone through a very unhappy time, until the Revival broke out, and, thank God, we are now on the way to being happy. I cannot explain my happiness now, nor the depth of my feeling. "About three weeks ago my little girl attended one of the meetings at East-street Chapel, and was touched by the 6pirit of God. She came home and urged me and her mother to go, too, and, thinking to paM a few hours away, we went. The meeting went on-I could not understand my tIf ings, but both my wife and myself found God. And I think we are all right now. and happier than we have been for a very long time." Eagerly he asked me too have a few words with his wife, who, with a sweetly glad countenance and a love-light in her eyes, recapitulated her husband's story. "How I would like to be singing Welsh hymns again," she said, and her husband remarked th-at she had attained consider- able notice for her vocal talent there, having sung in many big eisteddfodau. as well as in most of the churches and chapels in the Rhondda Valley. Mr. Williams produced excellent testimonials that he had received from the Cambrian Engineering Works, the Barton and Bessemer Company, and Mr. Kirkihouse. of Tylorstown, with whom he had occupied trustworthy posi- tions, each speaking in the highest terms of his honesty and ability as a workman, par- ticularly as related to boiten-making. Asked whether he followed football, Mr. Williams said he played regularly for Llwynypia some years ago, Whilst only in December last he turned out at half for Bristol against Gloucester at Gloucester. He said ha discontinued playing, as he found the away matches and tra,inin,g too much for him, though he has always been a teeto- taler and non-smoker. Since his convection all his ilitei-est in football had evaporated,' and, as with his wife and little Beatrice. notthin.g now gives him greater pleasure than to join once more in those, meetings wherein by God's grace, they found peaoe and happi- ness.

A Sunday Message Through the courtesy of Mr. Rhys Jones, or Godrecoed, whose guest Mr. Roberts is, we are able to publish a message which was given to the con-gregatiott at Bethlehem Green on Sunday evening. The following is a copy of the meesage:- Sunday morning. "Dear Mr. Jones,—This is the verse which has suggested itself to my mind:—'The pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in Hia hand I "The certainty of prosperity eh-a.ll prosper. "The Three Persons in the Godhead are doing their utmost. Are the Churches, I wonder, at their best? "Am I doing my utmost? "Are you doing your utmost? "Do I put forth my whole strength to promote the 'work'? "It is a difficult task to say, Thy will be done.' "But we must so say, otherwise His will cannot prosper to the extent He wishes it to. "This week I am obliged to 'humble myself under the nighty ha-nd of God.' It is easier to say, 'Let Thy will be done' than to do His will. But 'My grace is sufficient for thee.' II. "The condition of prosperity—'in His hand.' "Not our plans, but His Divine scheme; 'not I by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.'
