PERSONAL PARS.1
PERSONAL PARS. 1 Harry Watkins, Lianelly, I Is spoken of as the probable captain of the Llanelly team next season. Barnfield, Abercam, The erstwhile forward, assisted London Welsh on I their Easter tour, and played against Gloucester, Aber- dare, and Swansea. Captain George Brown, Ebbw Vale, Is now looked upon as the finest half-back playing I in South Wales. He is a slave for work, and always in the pink of condition. Haydn Esau, Abertillery Crusaders' I Wing, possesses a good turn of speed, but on the I whole, j although he has scored some good tries, he does not show the dash and devil he should. Llewellyn Jenkins, Neath, I Who a couple of seasons ago played many a clever game for Neath at outside half, has returned to the I fold after a sojourn with the Swansea Seconds. Alf. Pickering, the Aberdare 71?aysday back, and a -printer of some renown, assisted Ih, prer team in their li.lida? a, 7. ? display stamps him as a player of great promise. W. Morgan, Treorky, The newly-found forward, is creating- a good impres- ,-ion, and with, a little coaching he ought to make one of the best forwards in the TreorXy team next season. Jack Lynch, Brynmawf, I Is playing in grand form just Dmv, and is considered t4 be one of the best forwards playing. Lynch is a bull-dog type of forward who never shirks his work is a fearless tickler. I Chris. Evans, Treorky, I Who played outside half against Cilfvnvdd, was not I such a great success as when he skirted the scrum at I a previous match. Chris does not possess enough 6peed I for the position of outaide hall. Ben Davies, Lianelly, Seems to go on for ever. He definitely retired from I football some time ago and devoted all his energies to the duties of secretary of the club. No suitable suc- cessor at half being discovered, "Ben" turned out once I more. Williams, the Mountain Ash I Left wins, dropped a beautiful goal against the "Darians." His judgment in doubling back, followed by the excellent kick, was equal to any drop goal scored at the Mount. Willirjns is a player of ability, and being of sturdy build should make himself heard of in higher circles. Phil George, Abertillery, I Is quite the veteran of the Monmouthshire League, and probably of -Welst fact bell, sua ttas -well earned his title of "Evergreen Phil." Of course, Phil is not quite such a sprightly forward as be used to be, but he is still a thorouglily sound player, and well deserves his place. His preseooe in the "Tillery pack makes the world of differenoe in the play of the forwards, who always play in great style when Phil ill one of the number.

FOOTBALL -SKETCHES
FOOTBALL SKETCHES CARDIFF FINISH WITH A WIN. [BY FORWARD."] I Congratulations are due to Cardiff for finishing up the season with a win. The record of the club for the season hae alre&dy been given, and I am going to avoid. repeti- tion. What must be said is that it wag a good win to a poor game. A more wretched exhibition of football has not been seen this j season on the- Cardiff Arms Park. Whether j Cardiff or Llamelly were to blame is more than I wbald ear-e to decide, but it was an uncommonly poor'display that was given by the two teams. There was much unnecessary feeling introduced, and this was, in some measure, a sequel to the shouting and booing of the crowd, many of whom came to the field with strong prejudices against a tepm that is unfortunate in ite reputation. There was a lot of what passes in these days as "vigour," and both sides were to blame. Percy Bush, who won the game by scoring at LlsuellY, agaia helped materially to knock ————————————————————— T another hole in the "sospan fach" by drop- ping a goal. After this Llanelly had no chance, and their defeat was made doubly certain when J. L. Williamt; went over with a corner try, after nice opening had been made by Bush and Timms. Taking his play on the whole, Williams haB rendered good service to the Cardiff Club this season, arte in the last half-dozen matches he showeo himself a much-improved player. Dr. Timm. also, in the laet ooople of matches, seemes to be in better form than at any other time since he came to Cardiff. Comment hae already been made on the play and players, and there is nothing new to be added exoe-pt that no one is sorry the season is at an end.
!HINTS AND CRITICISMS.
HINTS AND CRITICISMS. By "Old Heathen." Gunstone, the Cardiff recruit, confesses that he was terribly nervous in his first trial at full-back, which was at Swansea. Immediately j after the kick-off the ball was punted by a Swansea back. and Gunstone was left to deal with four or five vigorous forwards, who nad followed up. The Cardiffian hardly knew what to do, but he held the ball, and was sent spinning to the ground. When he recovered Gwyn Kicholls was patting him on-the back for the plucky, if lucky, save, and after that Gunstone was coolness personified. From time to time surprise has been ex- pressed that such a stalwart body of athletes as the Cardiff Borough Police do not go in for football, and upon inquiry I learn that the sole reason is the head-constable s objection. Doubtless, Mr. McKenzie entertains the idea that, were his men football exponents, the watch committee would soon be considering tenders for crutches, splints, and the like. If he does regard the effects of the game in that light. I will only point to the benefits which the county police have from the game. Cameraderie and health are the main features, and the tactful attention bestowed I upon their doings by their chief, Captain Lindsay. has splendid recognition by the men. Mr. McKenzie, I feel certain, has a liking for British sport, and I need but point to his recent visit to the international at Swansea for proof, so by next season, perhaps, the men may feel disposed to approach him again. Questions concerning grounds for next season are already being discussed by several clubs. The Mountain Ash Club has been troubled by the Pontypridd nuisance, namely. the free view gang," and the evil effect on the gates therefrom was enough to smash the teams. -Now, however, both these clubs have schemes in hand for shutting out cheap obser- vation, and maybe the coffers will swell once again. Another club worrying with a ground "nut" is Pontlottyn, but their motive is simply to improve their playing space. The present ground, I am told. is situated on a slope, but water in disagreeable quantity collects upon it. and soon puts the surface in a deplorable condition. A large sum has been spent on draining the land, but it is feared that there are springs underneath, and it is quite on the cards that a new ground will be sought for. There was a unanimous snub for the Welsh Union from the spectators of the Cardiff- Llanelly game as Brice quietly made his way to a seat inside the rails, and, perhaps, after all, it deserved it. It may be remembered that Brice, immediately after the match at Balmoral, answered a pressman's query as to what he thought of the match by saying, "Not much, and it seems hardly likely, therefore, that he committed himself more than that. But, even if he did, he was not the only one. A prominent official in Welsh football went a bit further. He said his reason for not con- fiding his opinion of the match at Leicester to the press was that he feared he might have lost his temper and said something indis- creet! Wyndham Stars have followed up their vie-1 tory over Canton Wesleyans by an even more remarkable win over Canton Bible Christians. The previous match took place in October last, and the Christians settled the account by some half-dozen goals, which makes this i reverse all the more surprising. It should be stated, of course. that the Biblical team were weakly represented, but they cannot disguise the soundness of the win by such an excuse. Cricket is blooming up the hills in sterling fashion, and practices are indulged in every- where. Plymouth-Merthyr are taking a lead in the enthusiasm, and are making up for the loss of Peatfield by engaging no fewer than three professionals. Young Stanley Andy is again retained, and the others are Lancashire leaguers. Mountain Ash have also secured a pro., and. with Hugh Mulvey as cap- tain, should go close for the Glamorgan League Shield. on which Pontypridd are cast- ing jealous eyes. Mr. Lewis Wride. the secretary of the latter club, tells me that the enthusiasm and prospects were never better in the town, and he anticipates a happy t-er-

MERTHYR VALE.
MERTHYR VALE. Merthyr Vale were in very bad form against Abergavenny last Saturday. The latter brought a strong team over, and they ran the home players fairly off their legs. Aber- gavenny played a grand attacking game, and deserved to win on the day's play. The homesters were entirely out of Ports, and could only play the kick and the rush game. Combination was out of the question, and they were too fitiff for the smart, sharp attacks of the Abergavenny lads. Merthyr Vale supporters were surprised to learn that the two points won from Pont- lottyn were deducted for playing two un- registered (11 players. What the committee are annoyed about is that they were not notified of the meeting oonven.ad to discum the matter, and tha.t. therefore, thc* were unable to defend themselves or explain the state of affairs.
|PORTH.
PORTH. The mutch of the season is now a thing of the past. and. Ebbw Vale having IV6't their first league match away from home this season, their position as prospective cha.m- pions is not so rosy as it was before they visited Porth. Out of two matches to be played, they must secure three points to win the league. The defeat was none too swest to them, con- sidering they had already asked the league's consent to show the cup at Ebbw Vaie. ag they were certain of winning the league*, with a few points to spare. In any caeo now, they mnnot win the league by more tha? two points diS'erecce between them and the runners-up. The Valians did not anticipate defeat, and, judging by the way they started and the early success they met with, it seemed to them as if they had an easy thing on, but the homesters soon retaliated, and the Valians had a warm time of it for the remainder of the first half, the homesters leading by two to one at the interval. Each side scored once in the second half, affld the homesters ran out winners of a hard, but not brilliant, game by three goals to two. On Monday they played the return match with Hafod, and a scrambling gajne ended in a win for Hafod by two goals to nil The Porth team were poorly represented, no fewer than six reserves being included.
