(By Special Arrangement.-Copyright.) ART FOR ARTS SAKE I By MADGE S. SMITH. I You are a quixotic fool, Catherine! I have no patience with you!" Catherine turned over the much-darned stocking which she was mending before answering. And if I am, Uncle Henry, what ie that to you?" She spoke calmly, but the gleam in her dark eye told that her patience aJso was coming to an end. Uncle Henry rose to end the conversation. Very well; I have no wish to influence you- I only ask you to consider that your time may be fully occupied with paying pupils, and to ask yourself whether a penniless girl such as you can afford to give musric-leesons gratis. What is Hart Ian d'e lad to Uncle Henry left the room with dignity. and Catherine etirred the email fire into a fitful blaze, and held cut her cold fingers to its warmth. She might have been remarkably pretty in a quiet way. one would have said, had it not been for the hard lines that care had traced with remorseless hand on the soft brows and chin. An obstinate little face it was. too. with strong will in the firm chin and wide mouth. Under a wave of cheetaut hair, her dark eyes caught back the gleam of the fire. There was a touch of defiance in her attitude as she recklessly stirred the dying embers. Catherine Carlyon's life was not a gay one. Tb^ joys of home-life, the love of a mother, had never been hers but for a few short years. She was still a child when unkind fate sent her. an undowered orphan. toO make the seventh and eldest of Uncle Henry's struggling I family. Uncle Henry was very hard up. His wife, a fretful invalid, had greatly bewailed the extra care and expense of the motherless child. Catherine, a sensitive, highly-strung girl, had grown up under the impression that ehe was a burden and a nuisance to her harassed unole and aunt- Xow. however, matters were altered. Catherine was a girl of ardently musicai temperament; from her childhood, her hardly-begged musio-leissons had been the solace of an uncongenial life; now that she was older, they proved no poor investment. The weekly sum whica ehe earned by teach- ing music was very acceptable, and Uncle Henry prided himself on his foresight in indulging the girl's musical bent. That there were in her capacities for greater things, musical ability above the teaching of the common routine, was a point of view that never occurred to Uncle Henry. A plain, ordinary little music-teacher. Catherine appeared to Uncle Henry and the world at large. Few guessed that she had an end always in view. although at times sadly" fa.r off. A musical career! For this she was secretly saving the small allowanoo left from her weekly earnings, with this aim she practised long and assiduously in the cold, winter mornings. With this in mind. poor Catherine's too frequently recurring birthdays were a source of bitter annoyance to her, as each one found her further and further from her cherished aim. So Catherine knitted her brows, as she sat before the smouldering fire. "Ars longa, vita brevis! And I am three and twenty. I haven't it in me, I think; there is something wanting. But at least-at least—I can do something-and this roy-if I am not vastly mistaken in him-willdo great thing-s.she sighed a little-" tar greater than ever I could hope to achieve'" Miss Carlyon?" The boyish voice roused her from her reverie. "Come in, Bernard. I was expect- ing you. A tall lad of some sixteen or seventeen years entered with violin case in hand. bow- ing his close-cropped, dark head under the gas-bracket. "You are too kind, Miss Carlvon. But for masic would have to go by the board entirely. I can never repay you for this!" liepiy Catherine smiled. "It is pleasure in itself, my dear bov. And von know how you can more than repay me How?" The large doggish eyes looked questioningly into hers. "By doing me credit-doing yourself justice. Bernard, you will, you must make a great name for yourself. Bernard Hartland hung his head, blushing hotly, partly from nervousness, partly from the pleasure the words caused. "If only I could; but you see how things stand with me. My father wishes me to take my place in his office. I cannot run counter to his wishes. You see, he will not hear of a musical career for me; and then—he cannot afford. That's at the bottom of it, really:" "I know. "Then what can I do?" ".Bernard. do you love your music?" The boy blushed again. } es, indeed. Miss Carlyon!" "Better than yourself—better than anything you possess—enough to give up ease and pleasure and wealth for it ?" I do," he replied, with lip quivering. And only the la-ck of money can keep you from it? Bernard, can you humhle your pride for art's sake?" "I don't understand." Don't refuse me. It would be the greatest pleasure of my life. You have great talent, Bernard. You know it!" The boy gave mystified assent. I thought I had once." Catherine con- tinued with an effort. I could not let it expand. I was tied for money—cramped by circumstances, as you are. And I, like you, thought to be able. when I was older, to give myself the opportunity. But now that I might, I am no longer fit for it-I feel that it has gone from me!" "I'm sorrv-I'm awfully sorry!" the boy stammered, puzzled. I wish I could help you. Miss Carlyon." "You can! .1 have a little money—saved when I hoped to take my place myself. Bernard, let me help you—go and make a name for yourself in my stead." The boy's eyes gleamed through a mist. You mean-" I mean that you are to go to London, have the teaching you need. I will pay. It must be done at all costs." "I can't! You are awfully good; but I can't be such a cad for anything." "-Not for your .art?" There was a word of reproach in-ber wiee. You will not humble your pride for your art's sake?" The boy held out both hands. Yes," he said, I will do it, even that-for your sake. Miss Carlyon!" So they settled it. An interview with the boy's father had better results than either Catherine or her pupil had dared to hope for. The old man consented to bear half the lad's expenSoes, won over by her promise of the glorious future in store for him- Henceforth. the daily drudgery of Catherine Carlyon's life was to assume a new aspect. I am doing my part," she would think. I am making a master. I have not wasted my talent; I am enabling another to do what I couldn't do myself!" And Bernard's parting words rang in her ears: C3; will repay you! God helping me, I will do good work!" »•»**»# Five years later! A long time to think of, but it found little difference in Catherine. She sat as usual with her uncle and aunt in the shabby pat-ion". little shabbier for the years that ha.d flown. ,%iy boy. my poor boy." Aunt Louisa rocked to and fro, incessantly repeating the weary formula. "He is mined, my poor Tom! We are helpless! We can do nothingl" The letter which Catherine returned silently to her aunt told its own bitter tale. It came from scapegrace Tom. the apple of Uncle Henrys eye. and the clover boy of the family, now a clerk in a Liverpool bank. Send me the money, £ 100. by return, or it > is aH up with me," be wrote DiteonKv- "1 dift, stW it, I only b-o I thoc?tt IJ show be back- -Awtom ??-M J missed, but, of course, nobody would believe me. You must get it from somewhere; Catherine has some money, get it from her." "Poor Tom" said Aunt Louisa. It ie his own fault," commented Catherine. severely gentle. To-morrow will be too late. There is no chance for us! UnlesE-" Aunt Louisa paused significantly. "Unless what?" Uncle Henry asked, sharply. "You, Catherine, you have some money," the distressed mother made her last plea; "I know you have; I saw your bank-book. You can save my boy." Catherine gazed stonily at the fire. I cannot—I would gladly give it if I ha4 it, bLt-" You will not—oh! you must, yon must, to save my boy. Catherine, you owe everythine to us: it is your plain duty; I command you. I beg of yon-" "I cs unot; you are mistaken. I have no money. It is a lie. You had over zElOO!" Calm yourself, my dear," Uncle Henry interposed, dignified as ever. Miss Carlyon refuses her aid; there is no more to be said." Catherine felt her cheeks crimson at the imputation. 1 haven't it. You know I would do aDy, thing to help -ou!" A torrent of hysterical abuse drove bar from the room. Alone in her own room. thought was free. She, was powerless to help the boy. whom, after all, scamp as he W. she loved as a brother. She could not eat her cake and have it. Young Bernard Hartland s musical training had long since swallowed up the accumulated savings of years. But there-it was gone; it was no use wishing it back. "And I don't wish it back," she said, vehemently. She also had a letter from her boy, Bernard Hartland. unopened in her pocket. She drew it out now as a soiace. Little could the young musician guess what sulace and comfort his boyish letters brought to the lonely teacher. "I don't care" Catherine said. "Tom is A dolt; my boy is a credit to me! It was no exaggeration. In a few years training Bernard had indeed made rapid progress. His name was becoming well- known. and was a guarantee of large audiences when it appeared on oeneert bills. He was justifying her expectations; Catherine was more than content-ed with him. I am playing in Liverpool this week," he wrote, then ] am coming on to see YOu." Catherine started. Bernard was in Liver- pool then. where poor Tom was on the verge of disgrace and ruin. Again her pupil's words rang in her ears "I will repay yon!" There is time yet." said Catherine, after she had sat for some minutes in thought; there is just time. Bernard will do it fer my sake'" Her face was very white, as she began to write to tbe boy. I-ou promised onoe that you would repay me." she wrote; "if you can. will you do it now. I refused it before; now I beg it of you." She knew that he would do it. No shadow of doubt crossed her mind. Bernard was now in easy circumstances; he had indeed mentioned that he had saved quite a nice sum for certain private purposes." His private purposes most wait," she said grimly, and sealed the letter with determinm tion. Xow, said Catherine, a dull pain at ber heart, "my boy will pay me back; I shall have no more part in him. Well. I did what was needed. I made him what he is; it is nothing but selfishness on my part to keep up the obligation. But oh! my dear boy! I never thought to ask for the money back! God knows I gave it gladly." To scapegrace Tom she wrote a curt note. Go to Bernard Hartland, at St. George's. hall. He will help you. for my sake." Catherine was hacfard when she joinal th* family, but she smiled rather wearily as she kissed her aunt's teariwPJofee. It is all right. ud." she said kindly, Tam "hallh'n .thè. money." The few days that followed were ones of sore trial to Tom's parents. Catherine waited with more equanimity. She knew of a certainty her protege would not fail her. When Tom's letter came. all doubts were set at rest. Hartland is a brick," the lad wrote, "he stumped up in a minute, and doesn't want it back. I am saved out of a nioe hole. and shall be more careful in future. Hartland seems awfully well-off, and he is younger than me. I wish I was one of those clever chapa. They have jolly easy times, and good paz. while a poor beggar like me Faugh;" Catherine shook the letter angrily—"a graceless young cur!" And Bernard was coming! Well. it woolfl be nice to see the boy again, to see him grown, losing his boyish ways for manly ones, telling his tales of travel and experience, but alas! never to see him again with that glad feeling of proprietorship which she used to know. I daresay it is best," she told herself. "The bey felt the humiliation of it. How should one of the best musicians of the day like to f-eel under an obligation to a poor teacherf He will think kindly of me, I know." And day by day, Catherine felt the snnbght and joy fading from her quiet life. I had something to live for before," she said sadly, it was as if I had my own career in Bernard's; and now I have nothing; I have sold it!" She was sitting in the shabby parlour alone with her own sad thoughts. "Bernard!" She had meant. to greet him more caimly; less like a mother, welcoming her loved son; but he bad come on her so suddenly. I've been running like airything," said the boy; I came straight from the station. I thought I'd catch you before you went to the organ recital. I couldn't wait 'till to- morrow. The recital! oh. no, I am not going. 1 had forgotten it, in fact." "Forgotten' that's something fresh, isn't Well. I'm glad. anyway." "I want to thank you. Bernard. I can never thank you enough-for what you did for Tom—for me!" Bernard looked up suddenly. Don't talk about. that." he said. it nothing!" You are a kind boy. Bernard." I'm not a boy now. Miss Cartyon. Why you so funny with me? You don't eeem the same, somehow! "In what way am I changed?" She knew she needed no answer. yor,-v ou don't seem as if you cared. Haven't i done my best? ha-vent I fulfilled your expectations—as I promised I would?- You have. indeed, Bernard. And now you have paid me back. like an hODOuraA)ie mu, in my hour of need." "Paid you back!" The lad started to hill feet. Paid back. with a few paltry poondo. the loving kindness that has given me a career. I didn't think you looked at it in that light, Miss Carlyon!" I gave you the money freely for art's sake. It was well invested, as it proved." "And you don't care! You talk coldly about art; what did I care for art? You think me a boy. I am a man. I tell you-a man. All these years I have had one thing in my mind. to do you credit, to fulfil the hopes you had in me. I have made it my aim to be able to ask you to be my wife; and now you don't, want! I was saving for that, but I didn't mind putting even that off to help you, and you dont care!" You talk like a boy, Bernard. When you are gw old as we-" "A boy; must I be always a boy to you? Are you going to let a few years come between, us for ever. I thought it was me you cared for—not this eternal art! For art's sate, indeed! It was for your sake. Catherine, can't you understand? I'm asking you to marry me" And, somehow, after that. there wae nothing more to be said. (The End). TO-MORROWS TALE— "A WEDDING GIFT," by OS BORN ADAIR.
