The kerosene lamp in Miss Hetty Bonnet's little sitting-room was turned up to its fullest extent, and in the centre of the floor, kneeling before a black, tin trunk was Miss Hetty her- self, while by her side, regarding the opera- tion of packirg with the familiarity of old and privileged friendship, sat an immense yeliow oat. There was an air of cheerfulness about the apartment not wholly due to the presence of its bright-eyed owner, whose quaintly braided hair, and old-fashioned, flowered merino gown were suggestive of rosemary and lavender, but also to the wide-mouthed fireplace, with iti polished braes and irons, and to the tall clock in the corner, whose smiling face had placidly looked down upon the same green and led carpet for the last twenty yea,rs. "I declare" exclaimc-d Miss Hetty, laying in the trunk with tender care her very best dress of purple delaine, "it does seem like a dream, Tom, the idee of me ever gettin' to see New York. And after wantin' to go all my life, to think of this chance oomin', so unexpected. Ain't I glad I'd saved up that fifty dollar I My My! There'll be lots of things to tell yon when I git back." She arose as she spoke, her fa-ce aglow vith pleasurable excitement, and taking down fiom a closet a large piece of grey calico, threw it lightly over a cherry-wood spinning wheel that stood near the hearth, and whose fluffy ball of flaz had been the one plaything l,eld sacred from Tom's kittenhood. Just at this moment a vibrant knock on the front door caused Miss Bonnet to start, but, holding the kerosene lamp in her hand and closely shadowed by the cat, she proceeded to admit a bustling, red-visaged woman, whose whole appearance was in striking contrast to Miss Hetty's spick-aud-spanncss.
