[By Special Arrangem e n+, Copyright.] AN ARTIST S RANSOM, By EMILY S. WINDSOR. "What a steep rock!" cried a. young man, leaning over an abyss. It was in just such a place that Prometheus must have been chained. It seems that these profound cavities have been made for p. refuge for force and violence, those two divinities whom the poet iEschylus had celebrated. If ever leisure should be given to me to devote myself to one of those great works of the artist which pass his name down to pos- terity. this mountain should be my Caucasus. I would bring down the vulture which inces- santly gnawed the liver of that generous mortal whose audacious hand had snatched the celestial dame from the gods." While the young man abandoned himself to his enthusiasm, a brigand of the Abruzzes had glided after him, and repeated, in a terrible voice, the time-honoured formula: Your money or your life. Signor!" The young man turned his head with the indifference of a traveller who had long been awaiting such a demand. My money," replied he; go and demand it of the last innkeeper in the valley. Nothing remains to me but life, and you can take that, if you wish. I do not cling to it." There was a bitterness so profound in the accent with which these words were pro- nounced, that the horizontal position of the robber's gun became perpendicular, and he. moved by the instinct which draws those who have suffered, advanced towards the traveller. "You are, then. unhappy?" said he. "Will you be one of us?" At this moment eeveral other bandits came upon the scene, and with them a woman of remarkable beauty. She ran quickly to the first brigand, as if to assure herself that he had not met with any mishap. "I am not hurt, Mariette. It is a boy, without arm. Some pupil of the school of painting. Do you not see that end of a pencil OIl the rock here. "No quarter," said an old mnn, who appeared to be chief of the band, and whose ferocious aepoct betokened a life of brigand- age. "No quarter. These painters are often spies, who come to reproduce our faces to give them to the Government. They scatter our portraits in the towns and Tillages. It is at such a pass now that we cannot go to church for fear of being recognised. I have had to miss Mass several times. No, no quarter." "But," replied the first fellow, "this one has the air of being disenchanted with the world. And to have mounted here without knowing the paths, he must be a man of resolution. We have lost poor Francesco—who was about his age. I have just proposed to him to become one of us." "Thanks for your offer," remarked the traveller, coldly; "but I have no taste for your trade." "I am thinking," replied the bandit, "that you are a veritable child of Naples, and that yon are flying from the persecution of our Spanish tyrants." "Yes," cried the young man, "I am a verit- able child of Naples; and I hate the Yioeroy and his people as much as you can hate them. ..ht them I shall When it is necessary to fight them I shall "ftofbc the Itt £ Cr f tt W'aw the eword out of the scabbard; but I shall never, under pretence of the public ills, attack innocent people, to take from'them their silver and their gold." "Shoot him. Shoot him at once!" replied the oKf'chiStl"* The first bandit was silent; no voice was raised in favour of the traveller. The woman alone regarded him with kindly curiosity, but she dared not speak in the presence of these imperious masters. I only ask of you one favour," said the young man. It is only to let me see, before dying, the beautiful country which spreads out this side the rock; there, where the sun is emerging from behind those clouds, and its golden rays diffuse their splendour. Let me contemplate this grandeur of Nature one last time." You may advance just to the edge of the rock, at this side," said the old chief. There are no means of flight, and I advise you not to incline over the edge. If the ball which- would reach you did not kill you immediately the fail which you would have could not fail to finish you, and it would save us the trouble of doing it over." Very well," said the young man, I will profit by your recommendation." lie advanced to a little sheif of rock, which extended over the immense Talley, where was displayed all the magnificence of the Italian sun. The first bandit, on seeing this coolness, turned his gun in his hand with a gesture of regret. Hia comrades were prepar- ing their guns to tore. "lieavenbl" cried the young man, entranced with the tableau spread out under his eyes. What marvellous richness! Hits one ever seen a more surprising contrast. Here are all the rigours of nature, all its marvels, all its voluptuousness! One can die after having seen all that! I thank '.L iiee, my God, for this sublime spectacle!" 'i'he young man sank upon his kneee in an ecstacy of religious admiration. "Stop!" said the old chief. "He says his prayers. Let us respect his devotions." The young man did not arise. "What litanies is he reciting then?" impa- tiently cried the old chief. "I shall go and ta.p him on the shoulder and tell him to finish his beads." He approached the young man, who, pencil in hand, was sketching the landscape which he found so beautiful, and from the midst of thick bra.mbles bringing out an abandoned hut perched on the slope of a hill. The old chief had no sooner cast his eyes on the work of the painter than he uttered a cry of surprise and satisfaction. "My house!" cried he; "my old house where I was born. Poor roof, devastated by the soldiers—ruin which will soon be no more- there it is! Yes,, by my faith, he has dis- lodged it from ainong the rocks which sur- mounted it." "It must be a charming habitation," said the painter, nonchalantly. Oh, if you had Been it!" continued the old man, how it bloomed in the bosom of roses which blossomed around twice a year. The door which opened to the setting sun was embowered in honeysuckle. How smiling and beautiful it was! My father lived there like a king to the hour when, having missed paying one of thoee odious taxes which oppress the people, some Spanish and German soldiers came and pillaged ail. destroyed all. My father died while defending himself, my mother died through grief, and I fled into the mountains. I have sworn a. hatred to me-n. Since that time I have taken terrible revenges. I have hardened my heart. I have burned many houses. I have seen floods of blood flow. I have been avenged, but I cannot find myself before this ruined home without feelings of sadness." The old chief, whose eyes were full of tears. again fixed his regard ou the work of the artist. Great was his new aftoniflnnent! In place of the ruin, a beautiful oottage, whose door was wreathed with honeyencklee, aDd near which bloomed roees, was growing under the rapid pencil of the artist-vrhile the old man gave himself up to his memories. vC said, he» is really it"; and he laid his hand ofiefr tionately on the artist's shoulder. The rest of the band, surprised by this scene, came up to them; the artist received compliments on his talent. Is it not true," cried the young man. fluttered by their words, that Nature is there, living, and that she comes and paints herself in my eyes as in a mirror? Is it not true that I am not made to become a prelate, a cardinal, but that I have in me the genius of a grand artist? My parents sent me to the fathers of the congregation of Somasca. I do not complain of that. I learned to read the Latin poets there; but when the fathers wished to teach me—me. a poet-me, a painter-me. a musician—the laws of their philosophy, I said adieu to their syllogisms, to their metaphysical disputes; I fled far from them. I am eighteen years of age. My heart is full of enthusiasm and love; I prefer death, sudden death, to a life of weariness. I have traversed the mountains, to choose a summit from which I could throw myself some day, j; fortune did not smile upon me. My family it poor; my father, Antonio Rosa, is an humble and laborious artist. If he had only per- mitted me to work at his side! But no, they wished to make a theologian of me. I would rather run over the mountains. I prefer to expose myself to the barrel of your gun." Young man," said the first brigand. "fear nothing more; we take you under our protec- tion. I have been a painter also; and, though you see the life that I am leading, though I have left my brushes to arm myself with the carbine, it is because I love the daughter of this old man. Look at this woman, whose features are as pure as the Madonna of Raphael. I love her with all the strength of my body! I became a brigand in order to possess her." "the is beautiful, in truth," said the young man, raising his eyes to the bandit's com- panion. "She would make a splendid por- trait. I offer it you for my ransom." The young woman's eyes sparkled, and the old chief smiled while regarding her. The only tender fibres left in his heart were the ones attaching him to his daughter, and to his old home. "I accept your proposition," said the brigand; "but it will not be a ransom. I shall cover your sketch with gold, as no doubt one day the lightest stroke of your pencil will be covered. I predict a brilliant future for you." The young man set to work immediately, and he produced, feature for feature, the superb creature who posed before him. All the band were in ecstacies. "Here are two hundred ecus of gold," said the brigand, putting a purse into the artist'* j hand, when the portrait was finished, "is that enough?" j "I should just think so," joyously exclaimed J the young man; "the miserable dealers who I bought my first sketches have not habituated { me to this price. I have had to penetrate the } most savage places of the Abruzzes to receive j encouragement. And of whom? And how? I shall consecrate all my life to art, I will give it that which I owe to it. Art has been my saviour, and henceforth I shall sign all my pictures with the name Salvador." "Very -well!" said the brigand, while regard* ing the portrait of his beloved one, "and the ages will repeat the name of Salrator Boea 1" (The End.;

MARK DIDN'T WAIT. I An acquaintance of Mark Twain tells the, following amusing -tory: "When I lived with my brother in Buffalo." he says, "Mark Twain occupied a cottage on the opposite side of the street. We didn't see very much of him, but one morning as we were enjoying our cigars on the veranda after breakfast we saw him come to his door in his dressing-gown and slippers to look over at us. He stood at his door and smoked for a minute, as if making up his mind about something, and at last opened his gate and came lounging across the street. There W88 an unoccupied rocking-chair on the veranda, and when my brother offered it to him he dropped into it with a sigh of relief. Se smoked for a few moments, and said: — 'Nice morning.' 'Yes, very pleasant.' 'Shouldn't wonder if we had rain by-ami- bye.' 'Well, we could stand a little.' 'This is a nice house yu have here,' 'Yes. we rather like it.' "'How's your family?' "'Quite well—and yours?' '011, we're all very well.' "There was another impressive silence, an& finally Mark Twain crossed his legs, blew a puff of smoke into the air, and in his lany drawl remarked: 'I suppose you're a little surprised to see me over here so early. Fact is I haven't been so neighbourly perhaps as I ought to be. We must mend that state of things. But this morning I came over because I thought you might be interested in knowing that your roof is on fire. It struck me that it would be a good idea if-' "But at the mention of fire the whole family rushed upstairs. When we had put the fire out and returned to the veranda, we were- hardly surprised to find that the humourist hadn't waited."

Two smart young men were sitting opposite a Salvation Army lass in the Twopenny Tube. One of them leajied forward and remarked, Do you believe that tale about Jonah? The reply was in the affirmative. How can you prove it?" Oh, I'll ask him when I get to heaven." But suppose he is not there? continued the smart young man. "Then you. can ask him."
