[By Special Arrangement.-…
[By Special Arrangement.- Copyright.] AN ART!ST'8 RANSOM, By EMILY 8. WINDSOR. "What a steep rock!" cried a young man. ) leaning over an abyss. It waa in just such a place that Prometheus must have been chained. It seems that these profound cavities have been made for a refuge for force and violence, those two divinities whom the poet JEschylus had celebrated. If ever leisure should be given to me to devote myself to one of those great works of the artist which pass his name down to pos- terity. this mountain should be my Caucasus. I would bring down the vulture which inces- santly gnawed the liver of that generous mortal whose audacious hand had snatched the celestial dame from the gods. While the young man abandoned himself to his enthusiasm, a brigand of the Abruzzes had glided after him, and repeated, in a terrible voice, the time-honoured formula: "Your money or your life, Signer!" The young man turned his head with the indifference of a traveller who had long been awaiting such a, demand. "My money," replied he: "go and demand it of the last innkeeper in the valley. Nothing remains to me but life, and you can take that. if you wish. I do not cling to it." There was a bitterness so profound in the accent with which these words were pro- nounced. that the horizontal position of the robber's gun became perpendicular. and he, moved by the instinct which draws those who have suSercd, advanced towards the traveller. "You are, then, nnha.ppy?" said he. "Will you be one of UB?" At this moment several other bandits came upon the scene, and with them a. woman of remarkable beauty. She ran quickly to the &rst brigand, as if to assure herself that be had'not met with any mishap. "I am not hurt. Mariette. It is a bsy. without arm-. Some pupil of the school of painting. Do you not see that end of a pencil on the rock here." "No quarter," said an old man, who appeared to be chief of the band, and whose ferocious aspect betokened a life of brigand- aga. "No quarter. These painters are often spies, who come to reproduce our faces to give. them to the Government. They scatter our portra.itp in the towns and villages. It is at stich a, pass now that we cannot go to church for fear of being recognised. I have had to mise Mass several times. No. no Quarter." "But," replied the first fellow, "this one bSjS the air of being disenchanted with the world. And to have mounted here without knowing the paths, he must be a. man of resolution. We have lost poor Francesco-who was about his age. I have just proposed to him to become one of us." "Thanks for your offer," remarked the traveller, coldly; "but I have no taste for your trade." "I am thinking." replied the bandit, "that you are a veritable child of -Napler, and that you are nying from the persecution of our Spanish "Yes," cried the young man, "I am a verit- able child of Naples; and I hate the Viceroy and his people as much as you can hate them. When it is necessary to ught them I ehall not be the last to draw the eword out of the scabbard; but I sh&ll never, under pretence of the public ills, attack innocent people, to ta-ke from them their silver and their gold." "Shoot him. Shoot him at once!" rephcd the old chief. The first bandit was silent; no voice was rai&ed in favour of the traveller. The woman ajone regarded him with kindly curiosity. bat she dare<L not speak in the presence of these imperious masters. I only aok of you one favour," said the young mn. It is only to let me 800, before dying, the beautiful country which spreads out this side the rock; there, where the sun is emerging from behind those clouds, and ite golden rays diffuse their splendour. Let me contemplate thM grandeur of Nature one la--t time." "You may advance just to the edge of the rock, at this side," said the old chief. There are no means of night, a.nd I advise you. not to incline over the edge. If the ball which would reach you did not kill you immediately the faJl which you would have could not fail to nnish you, and it would &ave us the trouble of doing it over." Very well," said the young man, "I will pront by your recommendation." He advanced to a little sheif of rock, which extended over the immense valley, where was displayed all the magnificence of the Italian suu. The first bandit, on seeing thit; coolness, turned his gun in his hand with a gesture of regret. Hia comrade's were prepar- ing their guns to lire. cried the man, entranced with the tableau spread out under hi6 e3-e4s. "What marvellous richnees! Has one ever seen a more surprising contract. Here are all the rigours of nature, all it6 marvels, all its voluptuousue&b! One can die aftoer hanng seen a-ll that' I thank inee, my God, for this suMime spectacle!" The young .man sank upon his knees in an ecsta.cy of religious admiration. "Stop!" said the oid chief. "He says his prayers. Let us respect hi& devotions." The young man did not arise. "What lit-.t.uies ie he reciting then?" impa- tiently cried the old chief. "1 shall go and tap him on the shoulder and tell him to finish his beads." He approached the young man. who, pencil in hand, was sketching the landscape which he found so bea-utifoJ, and from the midet of thick bra-mbles hnnging out an abandoned hut perched on the slope of a. hill. The old chief had no sooner cast hie eyes on the work of the painter than he uttered a cry of surprise and satisfaction. "My house!" cried he; ".my old house where I was born. Poor roof. devaB'tated by the soldiem-ruin which will soon be no more- there it is! Yes, by my faith, he has dis- lodged it from among the rocks which eur- m.auntcd it." "It must be a channmg ha'bi-t.ation." said the painter, nonchalantly. Oh, if you bad seen it!" continued the old man, how it bloomed in the bosom of roce6 which blossomed around twice a year. The door which opened to the Betting sun was embowered in honeyz-u,.kle. How smiling and beautiful it wati! My father lived there ILke a king to the hour when. having missed paying one of tho&e odious taxes which oppress the people, eome &pa.nieh and German aoldiere oajne and pillaged ail, destroyed a.ll. My father died while deluding himself, my mother died through grief, and I Bed into the monnta-ine. I have sworn a. hatred to men. Since that time I have taken terrible revengae. I have hardened my heart. I have burned many houses. I have &een floods of blood flow. I ha.ve been avenged, bat I c&nno: find myself before thie mined home wrtbout feelings of sadneas. The old chief, whose eyes were full of t&ars. I again fixed his regajxl on the work of the a.rust. Great wae his new a-stonishmenf In place of the ruin. a beautiful cottagp. whose door was wTea<thed with honeyeucklee. ajad near which bloomed roaes. was growing under the ra.p<id pencil oif the artist—wilile the oM man gave himEelf up to hif memories. ThAt ie it." said he. with edfomot. talak is really it"; and he laid bis hand ?3'ec- tionat'ely on the artist's shoulder. The rest of the band. Furprised by this scecp, came up to them; the artist received compliments on his talent. Is it not true," cried the young man. flattered by their words, that Nature is there. living, and that she comes and painta herself in my eyes as in a mirror? Is it not true tha-t I am not made to become a prelate, a cardinal, but that I have in me the genius of a grand aniet? My parents sent me to the fathers of the congregation of Somasca. I do not complain of that. I learned to read the Latin poets there; but when the fathers wished to teach me—me, a poet-me. th painter-me, a musician-the laws of their philosophy. I said adieu to their syllogisms. to their metaphysical disputes; I fled far from them. I am eighteen years of age. My heart M full of enthusiasm and love; I prefer death.. sudden death, to a life of weariness. I have traversed the mountains, to choose a summit from which I could throw myself some day, if fortune did not smile upon me. My family is poor; my father, Antonio Rosa, is an humble and laborious artist. If he ha;d only per- mitted me to work at his side' But no, they wished to make a theologian of me. I would rather run over the mountains. I prefer to expose myself to the barrel of your gun." Young man," said the first brigand, fear notbing more; we take you under our proteo- tion. I have been a painter also; and. though you see the life that I am leading, though I have left my brushes to arm myself with the carbine, it is because I love the daughter of this old man. Look at this woman, whose features are as pure as the Madonna of Raphael. I love her with all the strength of my body' I became a brigand in order to possess her. "Ehe is beautiful, in truth," said the young ma.u. his (TeS to com. panion. "Sh would make a c-plendid por- trait. I offer it you for my ransom." The young woman's eyes sparkled, and the old chief smiled while regarding her. The only tender fibres left in his heart were the ones attaching him to his daughter, and to his old home. "I accept your proposition, said the brigand; "but it will not be a ransom. 1 shall co,er your sket-ch with gold, as no doubt one day the lightest stroke of your pencil will be covered. I predict a brilliant future for yon." The young man set to work immediately, and he produced, f&ature for feature, the STiperb creature who posed beiure him. All the band were in ecetacies. "Here are two hundred ecus of gold, sajd the brigacd, putting a purse inM the artist a hand. when the portrait was finished. "Lt that enough?" "I should Just think so." joyously exclaimed the man; "the miscrabloe dealers bought my first sketches Lave uct habituated me to this I have had to penetra toe the mo?t savage places of the Abruzzes to receive encouragement. And of whom? And how? I shall consecrate all my life to art, I will give it that which I owe to it. Art hn,s been my saviour, and henceforth I shall sign all my pictures with the name Salvat-or." "Very well paid the brigand, while regard. ing the portrait of his beloved one, "and the ages will repea't the.najme of SalTa tor Rosa. (The End.)

We didn't see very much of him. but one morning as we were enjoying our cigars on the veranda after breakfast we saw him come to hie door in his dressing-gown and slippers to look over. at ug. He stood at his door and smoked for a minute, as if making up his mind about something, and at last opened his gate and came lounging across the street. There was an unoccupied rocking-chair on the veranda., and when my brother offered it to him he dropped into it with a sigh of rctief- de smoked for a few mllm-ents, 'ice 'Yes. very pleasant.'
