[By Special Arrangement.-Copyright.] I THE LITTLE VIRAGO, BY SCOTT AINSLIE. Tall and slim, and straight as a young poplar, with shortly-cropped hair just touch- ing the collar of her fad-ed black gown at the neck, and tumbling almost into her black eyes in front, to be swept hack ever and anon by an impatient hand; with a firmly-eet month, revealing, when she smiled, the strong white teeth; a nose somewhat retrousse, and a sudden, petulant mode of speech tha, was somewhat disconcerting to a stranger; that was "the Virago at No. 14." Truth to say, she rejoiced in the title; it was distinctive, and she felt that she deserved it; it summed her up eo very tersely and com- pletely. Other girls might live in the odour of dull domestic sanctity, of Sa-bhaih church- going righteousness; for her was reserved the proud privilege of standing on a pinnacle of supposed wickedness, to which virtuous mothers might exultingly call the attention of their broods, by way of awful example. Her Christian name—if such an appellation is possible—was Janet, and she resided at No. 14, in a small street in one of the poorer districts of Chelsea—a district stamped by the numerous rusty bell-handles on the sides of its doorposts, and by the dissipated-looking milk-cans to be seen hanging on the spikes of its area railings—a district which yet had pretensions, in a certain way, to a species of gentility. At No. 14 resided also Mr. and Mrs. Tombins. and a considerable number of smaller species of humanity, who bore, by right of birth, the same name. Janet was a sort of distant rela- tion—an orphan-who, in return for many duties cheerfully and light-heartedly per- formed, received a somewhat meagre board and a decidedly sordid lodging. Mr. Tomkins was spoken of in hushed voice in the neighbourhood, as a commission agent," and it was generally believed that he was prepared to deal in the most extraordi- nary things, and in every conceivable market, if he could only get the commission. He was a little, mild-mannered man, who had evidently decided long ago that the thing called life was a puzzle, and that it was use- less to attempt its solution. Mrs. Tomkins was a lady who had. in some remote period, been handsome, and who. to the discomfiture of her neighbours, still traded on the remem- brance it was generally whispered that she possesed a small patrimony of her own. It appeared to have been by general consent of the neighbours that the girl Janet had earned her extraordinary title. As a matter of fact. her daily drudgery weighed so heavily upon her, despite her cheerfulness, that, pos- sessing a superabundance of animal spirits, it became an absolute necessity that she should find some vent for the demon of pure fun, and mischief. wbieh,, 'lurked within her. She had been for years at No. 14, but, from the earliest times, she had been a terror to to her more straightlaced neighbours. When a mere girl of twelve years, the complaints in regard to her were many and frequent. Should some unlucky neighbour offend her by look, or word, or deed, her vengeance was swift and sure. Windows would be discovered broken-small, but obnoxious offspring would return to the parenta.1 nest covered with mud. having been quite accidentally jostled into handy puddles—in fact, there appeared to be no end to her resources. Added to all this was the absolutely fearless use of a quick and ready wit in wordy warfare; a length of limb and swiftness of movement that defied pur- suit. Yet, had but one of those who saw only the flash of the black eyes, or heard only the canstic tongue, known anything of the inner beauty of the girl. something better and finer might perchance have been found-a some- thing better and finer that was hidden beneath the girl's semi-savagery, as a thing that would not be understood, and of which she, personally, was almost ashamed. Sametimse, in softened moments, she thought of it all, with some degree of bitterness, and with flaming cheeks; thought of some shameless remark that she had made, with almost, a longing in her heart that she could re-call it. She wan- dered sometimes, on sunny mornings. out into the more fashionable streets, having in her charge some younger member of the honee of Tomkins, and stood watching the delicate and well-dressed women wbo passed her, hearing like some quiet reproach the refined and well-modulated tones of their voices that floated to her. For a day or two afterwards she would be absolutely subdued; taunting small boys might shout and dance about her. but she would sail through them, with head erect. calmly indifferent; until sud- denly the old passionate temper would blaze forth, and some unlucky urchin, more auda- cious than the rest, would be swooped down upon and made a terrible example of to hie fellows. And then the old life would be taken up again, recklessly and defiant, and the virago at No. 14 hold sway in all lurid splen- dour of mischief. But the truer heart of the girl was touched on occasions, in spite of herself. On one summer evening she came upon a group of boys, on a piece of brick-strewn waste, and pel-ting a small and wretched- looking mongrel dog. In an instant she had rushed in upon them and scattered them, and the yelping, tortured animal was in her arms. "You little fiends!" she cried, stooping sud- denly, and pitching a half-brick at the nearest boy, with a girl's over-handed throw, that fortunately sent it wide of its mark. "I'd like to be a bit nearer to you. Poor little chap!" this to the dog, as she laid her chin on its bead—"oome on, then; although I'm sure I don't know what to do with you," sbe added ruefully. However, she took it home with her, and its soft little body, nestled in the hollow of her arm, and the plaintive cold little nose, thrust sometimes into her palm, brought a estrange light of tenderness to her eyes as she walked on. She was stealing quickly throngt the house, on her way to the attic on the topmost floor, that was her own special sanctum, when she was suddenly confronted by Mrs. Tom- kins. BeaJly, you are most trying," said that lady, petulantly. You know the staJte of my nerves—you know that the least, thing upacts me-znd you stay out until this hoar, aaid the children crying all over the place, in every room, and fighting on the stairs, and every other horrid thing-and-why-what have you got there? Oh! take the little beast out-take it out—at onoe!" The girl stood quite still, confronting her. At any other time she might have passively obeyed; but perhaps ut that moment the house looked more unsavoury and grimy even tíhan usual; the looming prospect of quarrel- same children appeared the more trying. Per- hatp.g. too, the warm little body next her own nerved her. She spoke quickly, with a. little etamp of her foot. > It isn't a 1-ittle beast. The poor little beggar was being kailed by some boys. I "How dare you!" eaid Mrs. Tomkins. "You strangely forget yourself and your position. Put it in the street at, onoe." "I shan't," said the girl, with another stamp of her foot. If it goes in the street. 1'11 go too. It's badly hurt, and hungry, and There were a few more ralaid words on either side. And Mrs. Tomkins fulfilled her destiny at- a woman with nerves, and very properly went off into hysterics. The girl's new and unaccustomed freedom charmed her, for a time. at letist. It was Lz, hot summer night-a night that even, in the sordid streets, breathed of country hillsides and lajiae, l ing calm and peaceful beneath the softened touch of the moonlight. iShe walked about fur a time, with the dog held ckscly to her, and presently sat down on a doorstep, in a street near that in which -No. 14 was situated, and rested her chin on the dog, crooning a little song to herself as she sat. The sound of a voice roused her. and, realising that someone was speaking to her. she looked up. A --a!! man, in a shabby su.t, and with an old stra.w hat on the back of hie head. was standing before her. with on amused expression in his blue eyes. His hands were thrust deeply into his pockcts, and his legs were planted very widely apart. He was quite young, and there was cai almost boyish frankness about him that was refreshing. Is anything the matter," he was saying. No, no, nothing." sue replied. shortly. "Anything wrong with the dog?" he asked. "Nf,: at least. I don't think so." she said, speaking more slowly, and putting her face down to the small creature on her lap. "He's been badly treated, and he's hungry. Ain't you. poor chap?"—this last to the dog. "Then, why don't you take him home and feed him. and not expose him; as well as your- self, to the rude blasts of Boreas?" said the man. "I don't understand you." she said. glancing up at him. "You don't think I'm such a fool as to be sitting here, if I'd got a home to take him to, do you? And mind your own business; I'm very comfortable. Go a.wa:r! The man laughed suddenly, then whistled, and laughed again. "And will you sit hem, oh! obdurate maiden with the bow-wow. until the strong arm of an unsympathetic nine- teenth century lictor bids you begone. "I don't know what you're driving at, but I shall sit here just as long as I please," she said impatiently. "And when you don't please?" he asked, smiling impcrturbably. with his head on one side. "I shall go somewhere else. Anything else?" "You're a queer sort of girl. Why don't yoa go home, to the paternal roof-tree?" "Can't yon talk plain English?" "Why don't you cut home to bed?" he almost shouted. b"tteJ" ghe answered, laughing in spite of herself. "Because they won't let me in with the dog, and I won't leave him in the street." "Oh, sad—sad!" he exclaimed, removing one hand from his pocket to strike an attitude. ".Stony-hearted father—airaid-l-shall-have-the* carpet-soiled mother—I know—I— "Then you're wrong; I haven't got a father, and I haven't got a mother. Try again, oid boy. "An orphan!" be cried. "Metaphorically. I embrace you. I, too. know not the touch of a mother's hand or of a father's slipper. But, my dear child," he added more seriously, "you can't sit out here all night—dog or no dog." 'I won't leave him in the streets." she s&id, firmly. He scratched his bead dubiously for & moment, pushing the old straw hat farther over his forehead in the -?kes6, tbcD e?* claimed, suddenly- Look here. Honour bright, I will, and you shall come and see him when, you like. No. he won't be a bit of trouble. She gratefully put the dog in his arms, and he ran off as if to avoid her thanks. But iii a moment he came running back again. l'ia Charlie Barry," he said, pantingly; and l'ia supposed to be an artist. I live in Tudor- street. No. 36. Come and see the dog." And he was off again before she- could speak. That was the commencement of a friendship that was the best thing her life had known; that was. indeed. life it3elf. She would wander into the great bare room, wherein he worked, as often as possible, and sit there. quietly watching him. He was always cheerful, his sayings were always droll; for her part. she thought there never had lived, or ever would live, so great a genius. His crudest eSnns had a charm for her that never ieastned. The dog was always with him, and her gratitude to him, for so loyally fulfilling his promise, was indeed great. It is. perhaps, scarcely necessary to say that she received no harm from her solitary friendship with him. He was, in all things, too frankly boyish—too sweet and pure- minded—to have destroyed her purity, by word or deed. But she grew to love him with a passionate devotion that was in keeping with her turbulent nature. She told him once that she had been in the habit of spending any odd moments she oould snatch in the quiet of an old church near at hand, whose doors were usually open. "It isn't that it makes me good," el-io explained. "If a person came in. I think I should run away. And I don't even pray. But it calms me down a bit, and things don't rub me up the wrong way, so much. I can fight them down there." He nodded and went on with his work. Success was coming to him slowly, and he was beginning to make money. But. in the midst of his hard work. he fell ill. Then it was that the house of Tomkins knew her no more; she never left his bedside, night or day, save only to gnatch a few moments of rest, on the hard floor, at his feet. For a long time he knew nothing of the service she rendered him; in his delirium, he had only some indistinct idea of a familiar face that was ever near his own of strong young arms, that raised him up; of tender hands, that fed baa and smoothed his pillows. For the people of the house cared nothing, and. in fact, the girl would not admit a soul into the room, save only the doctor, who probably- thought she was the patient's sister. When at last the crisis had come. and had gone by, and he opened his eyes, and smiled weakly at her, she fell on her knees beside the bed, covering his thin hand with passionate kisses, and laughing and sobbing in the same breath, for very joy that he was given back to her. She came in one- day. soon after that. from a tiny room. she had persuaded the landlady to let her have. at the very top of the house, and stopped dead on the threshold; seuXed beside the bed was a young and fashionably- dressed girl chatting with Charlie Barry. Before either of them had seen be.r. she slipped out again, and walked steadily down the stairs and out of the house, with the scalding tears in her eyes and a liram in her throat. Thereafter she kept away from him: be had his friends now—swells, as she bitterly termed them—and it did not matter. She got a situation in the neighbourhood, and worked hard. and tried to sing at ber work, a.nd to forget him. For his Twrt, poor Charlie waited, and waited, in vain; the whole place seemed a blank and awlul spot, without that black- eyed, shabby-looking figure flitting about it. A fortnight passed, and then, one sunshiny afternoon, he crept out. to try and find her. With a remembrance of her words, he went to the old church, and pushed open the door and entered. She was ooming straight towards him, and she stopped, as if uncertain, what to do. But he went forward slowly, and held out his hv.ds. She kept her own resolutely behind her. "What's the matter?" Nothing." she snapped, fiercely. "You don't want me now; you've got all your own friends- let me pass." I will not," he said, resolutely. I do want you; there is no other woman on the wide earth who is so much to me; there is no other whom I love." She looked at him keenly for a moment; then her eyes softened, and she drew a step nettrer to him: then suddenly the proud defia-nt head was bowed, and she burst into a passion of tears. He drew her into his arms, and soothed her there, and kissed her, for the first time sincse he had known her,, And they went out again into the sunlight presently, happily haind-in-hand, like children seeking a new world.
