[By Special Arrangement—Copyright.] THE DOG THAT SAVED HER, By L. G. MOBERLIK He was a Scotch terrier-and she called him Pat. His first youth had fled long ago, and his brindled coat showed many grey hairs, whilst his funny little legs' with their bent knees gave token sometimes of the stiffness of old age. But those beautiful doggy eyes of his had only grown more human as the years rolled by. His faithful little heart under his shaggy coat loved her with a wonderful human love. He used to sit and watch her with a wistful, almost pathetic, adoration, and he was never happy if she was out of his sight for a single instant. The dog and the woman were real close friends, and she talked to him as if he were a human being. I am almost inclined to think he waa human, for though he could not speak to her in words, his loving eyes never failed in sympathy—hia mute caressing gestures were full of the deepest meaning. She smiled sometimes, even now, over the remembrance of the day when he had first come into her life. He had been a puppy then, a tiny brindled puppy, with a head many sizes too large for his quaint little body and short legs, and a minute tail which he had wagged at her persistently from the first moment they met. How they had laughed over him—ehe and Rachel! It had been they," then. Now, she looked back alone. They had planned to buy an Irish terrier, and the Irish terrier, when bought, was to have been christened "Pat!" But, instead of the Irishman, they had invested in this small canny Scotch person, and in spite of his nationality he had of P received the name of Pat," and, somehow, it seemed to o-uit him. He had loved them both with a curious equality of devotion, had pined miserably whenever they went away from him, had welcomed their return with an almost human cry of joy. And when one of those two who loved each other had gone away. alone, to that dim land from which is no returning, the little faithful heart had clung with wistful loving sympathy to the other. who was left. For long weeks, each time the door was opened, his eyes had wa/tched it with strange eagerness, looking for the form that would never again cross the threshold. And when each time he was disappointed he looked into the face of the woman who had been left behind with a yearning longing that made her own misery more complete. The day came at last when he realised that all his watching was in vain. Then he came and looked at the one who was left, looked at her with deep loving eyes, which said plainly, I will take care of you now. But this was all long, long ago. She stood up in the middle of her bare room, and stretched herself wearily. Pat sdoud by 00r side. He looked at her wistfully; he had not altogether understood her lately. Times had changed, so very, very much, since the day that his other mistress had gone away, never to come back. The mistress who was with him now looked down at him. Poor old Pat," she said gently, poop wee doggie! It is nasty, old man, isn't it? Never mind, it'll be better soon." Little hard lines crept round her mouth, Pat watched her gravely. He had pricked his ears when she said, "Poor wee doggie." But her voice hardened towards the end of her sentence. Pat'a ears dropped aigain despondently. He looked at her still, but he hung hia head a little. She moved restlessly about the room. open- ing drawers mechanically and shutting them again, because they were all empty. Her few clothes had vanished, ofae by one. They adorned the window of a second-hand clothes shop now-in a slum close by. She sat down by the little table, and looked round her. The room was desolate enough. A small truckle bed stood against the wall, above it hung the only picture to be seen; it was the photograph of a woman with a grave sweet face, dressed in the fashion of a few years before. There were only two chairs, both hard and uninviting, both were old and shaky. The small table was covered with a piece of red Turkey twill. It was the only bit of bright colour in the room. A chest of drawers stood againfrt the wall opposite the bed, a low chest, and upon it a jug and basin, of course, white wane. And, at right angles to this, was the only good piece of furniture she still possessed, the one remaining thing which she could not make up her mind to part with, even in her dire straits. It was a dark o&k bookcase, beautifully carved, containing very few books, and those old, shabby, worthless, all far as market value went. Her best books had gone, long ago. She smiled a little wan, bitter smile, as her eye fell on the bookcase. I am glad it has stated with me—to the end," she said. Do you remember the day we bought it, Pat. old man?" Pat pricked up his ears and wagged his tail faintly. He loved to be talked to, and con- sulted, and his replies were always sympathetic. A vision of the old furniture shop in Mary- lebone High-street rose before her eyes. Rachel's voice was in her ears. I am going to give you that bookcase, dear," she had said, in remembrance of the first day we met." Pat had been youthful then. He had chased an ancient tabby-cat all through the shop, with superfluous energy and much wagging of his tail. He had become sober now. She sighed, an impatient sigh, and pushed back her chair. It clattered against the oil cooking stove that stood in front of the fire- place, and soented the room with the subtle all-pervading smell which a cheap oil-stove is never without. "Pah!" ehe exclaimed, impetuously, "how I hate that stove! Thank goodness, I shall never have to cook by it again. How I hate it aU-all!" Her eyes wandered round the room again. It looked unutterably mean and bare and desolate. A vivid recollection of old sunny, happy days rose before her, days when she had not had to wonder at the end of one meal how she waa going to get another. The contrast gave her a sense of almost physical sickness and pajzl Her childhood and girlhood away in the mists of the past had been so unruffled and bright. And when the old home had broken up, and a crash of money troubles had come, every- thing had been softened by Baahel. She had been taken care of and sheltered and loved ¡' with a tender, intense love. Bach el's home had been hers. They. had been bappy, ah! how happy! A great stab of intolerable anguish went through her. Happy? Yes. But she had forgotten— almost—what happiness meant—now. A little pitiful sob rose in her throat. She moved to the window and looked out. Below her the traffic, and the people surged to and fro, by day and night, along a great thorough- fare They were lighting the lamps down there. Daylight was fading fast. A crowd of girls passed by. Girls in flashy clothes, with haggard, painted faces. They laughed shrilly. The woman who watched them shuddered and turned away. I shall be no better than they are by to-morrow," she said. She took down a little glass from a nail on the wall and looked at herself in it. Her face was white and thin, but its lines of beauty were unmistakable. Good food and good clothes will keep me beautiful for years." She laughed—a hard laugh. A soft nose crept into her hand, a soft head was pressed against her. Pat's wistful eyes met hers, that was hard and bright. His look was pleading, it struck upon her heart like a remonstrance. She put down the glass, and knelt upon the floor, taking the dog's head into her hand's, and looking deep into his eyes. Pat-I can't help it," she whispered, "I am so poor, so deadly, horribly poor. I can't fight any more.I can't get work, and we can't live, my doggie, without food-and I've sold everything I possess—except myself." The faithful dog's eyes looked into the woman's sad ones with a pathetic yearning in their depths. Don't look at me like that. my doggie dear. Someone is coming for me to-night, who says he will be good to me, and I have fought so long that I can't go on any mo"e- and we shall be fed and warmed, and have everything we want, and not starve with cold and hunger, old man, any more. And I've got to pay the price for it. and-the prioe—is—myself." Her voice dropped. A little miserable whine was Pat's only answer. He crept closer to her, but still his eyes met hers. I shan't be happy, my dog, it's not that. But we must live." Her voice grew reckless and hard. She laughed again. We shall have a decent house over our hea-us, Pat, we shall have heaps of clothes, and good things to eat; we shan't have to sit and shiver here. and cook by an oil stove that smelliT-and I've lost all I care about except yon, my doggie dear—and what's the use of being good any longer, when there's no one to care, and it's all blank, blank misery. Her hands dropped to her side. Pat watched her eagerly, anxiously. There was a whole world of intensest pleading in his eyes. She turned hers half away. Pat, it a no good to look at me like that. I know I'm going to sink down and give up everything that's right. But I can't bear this any longer; I want warmth, and comfort, and—and With a little pitiful moaning cry the dog sprang upon her lap and laid his head against her breast. lifting his face to hers. "Pat, please, please, don't" she moaned. Don't you know my heart is breaking?" The faithful eyes, with their wonderful tenderness, looked, to her. strangely reproach- ful. Did the dog understand? Would he always now look at her like that, with wist- ful, reproachful eyes? The hardness died slowly out of her face. Still the dog watched her, all the human ia his eyes looking deep into hers, yearningly, pleadingly. She turned away from him agtt, but he put hia soft head against her cheek once more, with a mute caress, then lifted one- of his paws, and laid it against her neck with a little whining cry that was almost a moan. And at that she broke down utterly, and laying her face against the soft brindled head, she burst into a perfect storm of sobs. I think I have been mad:" she cricd. I can't do it. Oh' I can't do it. I could not meet my dog's eyes again if I did. How could I ever look into Eachei's, when I see her again?" She rose hastily. I must go before he wmec- she whispered. "Ah! God give me time!" She threw round her a cloak which hung behind the door. and pinned on a little sailor's hat. She hurriedly tore half a sheet of paper from a letter in her pocket, and wrote upon it the words, I have gone away. Please never look for me or expect to see me again. I thought I could be wicked for comfort's 6ake, but I can't. My dog has saved me." She folded it and addressed it, and left it on the table. Then she looked longingly at the bookcase, and suddenly she stopped and kissed it. "I can't take it with me." she said. but Rachel will know all about it. and will understand. She always understands." And a little smile broke over her face. She made a parcel of her books, and with, them she put lovingly the photograph from the wall. If I had gone with him, I could not have taken this with me," she said. I can take it now, thank God-and thank my little dog." She looked round the dreary room. The tears were still on her cheeks, yet she smiled through them. Some day I shaU tell her how I have been kept from harm, and how our little Pat has saved me." Then she went out into the bustle of the great, thoroughfare, where the people uhronged and jostled under the flaring gas- lights. And she passed along the pavement swiftly, and vanished among the crowd. And Pat ran beside her. trotting softly, with ears pricked, and tail erect, and eager. watchful eyes. (The End.)
