'[By Speciai Arrangement—-Copyright] j SAVED BY TWO BOYS, By W. THOMSON. I Those hardy adventurers who. fit imminent risk and with irdlipi>P toil. crossed the Indian and wild beast infested great plains in the l eariy days of the California gold fever. saw things fully as wonderful—though different in kind—as do tiic-y that go down to the sea in ships." I In the fnring: of 1850 J. then a. stout yoong fellow of twenty-six, took the aforesaid fever in its most aggravated form, and thereupon incontinently joined a large party. organising aft, St. Louis for the overland journey—one somewhat different from that of the present day, when the traveller, luxuriously domi- ciled in a palaoe-car. is whirled across the continent in le-S than a twentieth of the time we were obliged to oocnpy; and, too, WITHOUT encountering any of the perils through which we had to fight our way. A full ace??unt of this eventful trip would r.equirc ten times the space at my coarmand. Therefore, I will merely record the leading incidents of a single day. I I Our outfit consisted of eight canvas-covered wagons, 24 mulee, and twelve caddie-horses: wliiie the party itself numbered 32 men, two women, and two boys of fifteen, the latter feeling much aggrieved because they had never been allowed to take part in the fight- ing. Although engaged in numerous skirmishes with the }!edskjni!> while passing through Colo- rado and what is now Arizona, we had come to the old Spanish trail in New Mexico with- out having lost a man or an animal, though several of us had received more or less serious I arrow-wounds. This immunity was to be pur- chased, however, only by nevcr-ceas- j ing vigilance, AS was evident from the fact that scarcely a day passed in which we did not come upon the burned wagons and mutilated remains of I parties who had been either TOO WEAK to heat off the blood THIRSTY foes or rcmisis in keeping proper guard. One evening, after having been threatened ,all day by hovering swarms OF mounted Apaches, WE formed corral near the bank of a small stream, locally called Moro Biver. put everything in shape for defence and tethered the stock out to graze for a few hours, SIX I' of our best rifle shots patrolling between the herd and the adjacent mountains to guard against surprise. But the prowling savages had totally disappeared, and at ten o'clock the cattle were brought in to the wagon-; enclosed corral without any covert movement on the enemy's part having been detected. "The red observed Dave Ingram, our guide, "don't hardly ever attack a strong party at night, bm, all the FAME, we'll keep four sentries out, an' change 'em every hour, so there'll be no fear of any man gittin' drowsy. They'll need to keep their eyes skinned, though, for the night's black a? p?tch. an' them varmints beats snakes all hoUer for quiet crawlin' The two boys, Hugh and WALTER, were standing close TO the speaker, and one of them, now said, "Mr. Ingram, let us stay out with the guards for a while. We're mighty sharp-sighted, and we've both got good rifles, We haven't had any fun at all yet." I "Well, young 'uns, if you call it fun to resk havin' your hair lifted, you kin go out from two to three in the mornin'. The moon'il show up by that time, so's you kin see your way back to camp when you git skeered." I Although the guide spoke thus lightly, he was well aware that he was assigning to the boys the most dangerous hour of the TWENTY four; but he knew how keen all their sense*, and that they I really might detect a hostile move- ment more quickly than could their older companions; while they were sum. he thought, to scamper off in time to save them- I selves—a most egregious mistake. He should have known boy-na-ture better than that. The lads, hugely delighted by the long- wished-for concession, could not sleep at all I tha??B<e?. acd when the quadrup? two o'clock eentinels were ready to relieve their I predecessors the youngsters w?-e on hand, lively as crickets, and just aching for a fight. I Two of the sentries were stationed on the mountainward side of the camp—one at its east end, and one on the south, the west approach being supposedly protected by. the river; while the boys were expected to amuse themselves for an hour by visiting each post in turn. But the adventurous young scamps didn't carry oat the programme. It was altogether too tame for them. They hadn't been out ten minutes when an idea, worthy of a veteran plainsman, struck Hugh, who whispered to his chum, "Say. Walt, what's to prevent the Indians from stealing along under the low bank of the creek, and crawl- ing right into camp before anyone sees them ?" "• That's eo," assented Walter. If they a.re horse Indians. they could leave their ponies in that big cottonwood grove up there, and ■creep down "by the edge of the creek easy as winking. Let's sneak over that way, and lie down on the bank, quiet. as cats." In days we had no magazine guns, -bat each of the boys. like the rest of us, carried a muzzle-loading rifle and a, Colt's revolver: and now, while each of the SENTRIES SUPPOSED them to be at, the other posts, they stole T-oftly to THE river, laid themselves flat on the bank, and peered over its edge, intently watching and Listening. Though the nearly-exhausted moon some. what lighted up the narrow ribbon of water, everything immediately below the bank was in deep shade, a-nd for thirty minutes or so 'the alert youths could neither EEE nor hear anything suspicious. Then Walter gilentiy pressed his comrade's airm, and both dimly faw, in the shadowless darkness, one—two— three—numberless Sbooping wa=om Sitting in single file, QtMseleasiy as so many ghosts, Im?tr,;Lu, dry, 'bla<? mud of the riYer's a?l?c,ug the dry, bacl-. mud of the river' ,s The young fellows might easily have got away unobserved, and -alarmed the CAMP at their leisure, but such an idea never entered their heads. Here at last was a chance for glory, AND no amount of danger could have induced them to MISS it. So, when the fore- most, braves of the phantom-like line had come within twenty yards, both, as if governed by a, aingle impulse, levelled their rifles, and, though accurate aim was impos- sible, fired. Then each, as rapidly as he could draw back hammer and pull trigger, emptied the six chambers of his -revolver in THE same direction, and. AS was AFTERWARDS found, not entirely without effect. For a MOMENT or two the astounded savaiges remained motionless, doubtless believing that they had been assailed by U least a dozen enemies. Then, as their extended line doubled up and closed around the leaders, the whoie crowd, numbering a half hundred, broke with appaaling cries over the bank, and gave ch-aoo to THE RAAH boys. But these, thoroughly trained by school raoing, could have out-speeded the fleetest of their pursuers even with a square start; so now, as they ran like young deer oampward, the howling crew never once got within arrow-shot. Meantime, the firing had alarmed the een- tinels, who, rushing into the corral, instantly aroused its inmates, and when the panting youths reached the entrance. 34 rifles were ready to welcome the yet distant Eedskins, for even the two frightened woman had armed themselves, and both were fairly good shots. ] t was now three o'clock in the morning of the long June day. Already, lance-like shafts of light, appearing in the eastern sky, outshone the moon's feeble rays, and realis- ing that aJI hope of a surprise was past, the oncoming band halted at what its members, doubtless, thocght the safe distance of 400 yards. But there were marksmen in our pa.rty who, provided with special rifles, thought nothing of plumping a turkey at 440 yards. Calling on each one of these by name, the guide directed them to try their akiil on the still obscurely seen Apache«. Accordingly, every man elevated his back sight, and took as careful an aim as possible. The five reports rang out as oce. and four of the too credulous braves dropped in their tracks, while the others, yelling in frantic rage, fled precipitately to the oottonwood grove. I gness that settles the business," observed one of us. "Maybe," dryly replied Dave Ingram, "but I shouldn't wonder if there's a big lot of the red cusses, with their ponies, in that neck of timber. They'll be hoppin', crazy mad at the wipin' out of them warriors, an', likely as not, they'll be fools enough to swoop down on the camp. Well, if that ca-per pleases them it won't hurt ns, for we kin stand off 500 of suoh reptiles without turnin, a hair." Por a fall hour, howeror, no signs or-- life _j could be seen in or about the grove, and some of us began to prepare breakfast, while others would have led the horses and mules out to pasture had not the veteran guide inter- posed. Don't BE in a hurry with the cattle. b.GTg," he said. I ain't by no means sartin that the reds has obsquatulated yit. Anyhow, we'd best take it easy till we see what turns up." The last word WA« barely uttered when, from a hundred points of the wooded patch. suddenly emerged as maiiy war-]Kiinted mounted Indians, some few. as we could see IN the now broadened daylight, armed with, smooth-bore flintlock GUNF, in addition to the lances, bov.s and arrows, tomahawks, and. knives carried by all. Thunder exclaimed Ingram, "the pesky critters is goin' to make a fight of it, sure! Say addressing one of 11:0" try your target rifle cn that big feller with the feather head- dress. -He's tip-top chief. I reckon." In nowise loth to exhibit the power of his pet gun. the young man rested its muzzle on the rim of a waggon wheel, and, after squint- ing for A-moment through the still further elevated back globe sight, TOUCHED tins trigger. The distance was quite six hundred yards, but, the experienced rifleman had gauged it accn- raitely. The bullet, necessarily describing A great parabola in its flight, descended exactly AS designed, and the bediaened sav-agc, throw- ing up his arms with a. yell that might have been heard a mile, toppled, heart-pierced, from his pony. Now, indeed. all the furies of heR HFIEMOD loosed, upon the plain. With demoniacally- resounding war-whoops, the vengeful nomads, spreading out wider and wider as they lathed their ponies to topmo-st speed, dashed down to within two hundred yards of us; then the wings of their line swept around until our camp wss completely encircled, when the whole force recklessly charged upon aLl sideei at once. only to ficd every point guarded. The guide had instructed us not to waste a single shot; hence we reserved (yur fim until the feebly-thrown round bullets of tin* smooth-bores, and even a few arrows, began to hurtle through the canvas wagon e-werti. Then Dave's "-Now, men" WITS followed by IHE crack of nine rifles from each ia-ce of the square it-be two boys were in it this time, and a score or more of riderless ponies, being so trained, stood with drooping heads over the prostrate forms of their late masters. Wrought to a pitch of unreasoning fury, and only for a moment dismayed by the carnage, the seventy-five or eighty survivors. imagining that we we-E now defenceless, came on again with redoubled impetuosity. But they hadn't reckoned O the Whi!" a cloud of arrows. fired in full career, whistled around and among u. the "shoot-all-day little guns" began to get in their work; the screeching Eedskins fell fast for a few seconds, and then, overawed by the mystery cf the continuous shooting, broke away and skurried off toward the mountains. In a quarter of a minute all {oUr weapons were re-loaded, and on taking stock of damages, we found that three of the horses had been killed outright, and four of our- selves slightly scratched by arrow. But our troubles were not yet over; and onoe more it was to the sharp-witted boys we owed a. timely warning-warning of a danger against which our puny weapons would avail as litUe as would a fisherman's net ?.gainet the mighty rush of an incoming ocean tide. Nearly a half-hour had elapsed since the final disappearance of our savage foes, ati* we were busily engaged on the delayed breakfast, when TIE lads, who had hurried through theirs, crept out under the wagons on the east side of the corral, with the very natural desire of gathering up some memen- toes of their first battle. The sights encoun- tered there proved so gruesome, however, that they were about to retrace their steps, whn something low down on the eastern horizon caught Hugh's eye. "What's that. Walt;" he vronderingly ai-ked. "Why," replied the other, "it looks like A big army coming along in a cloud of dust. See! it stretches out for miles at each end. Let's go in and tell MR. Ingram." And next, moment the young fellows had jaade their Etart.1ing report. One glanoe AT the factal)ptaaching army was enough for tbe guide. "Boys," HE excitedly shouted, "hitch up quick AT light- ning and make for the timber That's the biggest euunpede of buifaioes I've ever nwegi in my life, and were right- in trwk! If we can't get to that piece of BUSH 'fore they come, up every man of and every beast, too. will be trampled into everlastin' mush. The critters won't turn aside for no dozen corrals. Nothin' 'but solid timber or rocks kin epl-it a crowd like that." No second command was needed. A dull, hoarse roar, like the RUMBLING of distant. thunder, could now be plainly heard, and the ominous, whirling cloud of dust came every iasitant nearer and neuxer. All hands worked for dear life, and in an incredibly short, space of -time we were in full flight. eight of the remaining nice horses having been harnessed up .with the twenty-four mules, thus givinc four draft BEAFTKJ to each wagon. "We'll make it slick enough. cheerily observed Ingram, as the horses and mules, intuitively aware of their own danger, streched out in A furious gallop, while the staunch wagons flew over the level plain as fast as a chargrns field battery. The wood was about tkn acres in extent, of tri-angular shape, one of its wedge-like CORNERS pointing due east, and its BAEE abutting upon the river. In lese than two minutes we had reached ite south side, and threaded our way between the giant cottonwood potes for some little distance. Then we turned to gaze 11"pon a. sight the like of which will never again be seen by living man-a tri-ght eD grandly ter- rible that now, after a la-PSe of forty-five years, it is not infrequently reproduced in. my mghtly dreams. Incalculable AS the eands of the sea in number, extending north, south. and ea.st beyond the limit of our vision, and shaking as with earthquake tremors the ground upon wb lic-t wp stood, came the mighty phalanx of maddened buffalo. Toesing, tearing, plunging Mindly onward, -,Titi-. -,i weight and momentum before which the serried ranks oi A disoiplined army would have been crushed into nothing- ness. the ruehing beasts presented a spectacle of such awful resistless power that, in con- templating it. we pigmy mortaJs felt our- selves as insignificant as eo many grrase- hoppers. We had not long to gaze, however. Thirty seconds after we had tatken shelter, the heav- ing mass of great ishaggy bulls in the centre N-an of the advancing columane came to the apex of the timbered triangle; but. sneh -was the enormous pressure from behind, they COULD neither stop nor turn. Hence no less than thirteen of the huge beasts were forced head- long against tree trunks and killed on the spot, whatever life might have been left in their stunned forms being trampled out by their rearward companions, before the latter, ever pressed onward by others, could aside. But now a narrow, gradually widening GAP appeared in the centre: and forcibly com- pacting its dense masses to right and left, the wondrous herd divided, swept,. with a vyieknue, like roar aiung either aide of the wood, into a.nd aicrosa the shallow river, and so away over the western plain, until the wild, stam- peding craze should wear itself out. How far to the north or south this prodigious body of buffalo extended we could not judge; but its depth from wetst to east must have been at least two miles, for one of our men, who carried A watch, had the presence of mind to time it. and found that it occupied a fraction more than ten minutes in passing us, while the guide estima, ted its speed at twelve miles aa hour. That part of the hitherto green plain over which the myriad hoof's had passed now looked: like an immense dust-covered field. Not a blade of grass nor the tiniest shrub remained —all had been ground to powder. And, a,las' for the gallant boys' war trophies. When wo returned to the battle ground not a vestige of tbe slain warriors or their WEAPON* could be found. Flesh and bone6. iron, wood, and flint were eo thoroughly incorporated with the pulverised soil that no recognisable fragment of any coakL be discovered. Tho riderless ponies had, however, been ewoept a.way in the general retreat of the vanquished Indians. [The End.]
