[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK…
[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] A BLACK REVENGE. By FLORENCE WARDEN, Author of "The Secret of Princess Paul," "The House on the Marsh," &c. CHAPTER XXI-Continued. j The officer only smiled, while Williams kept modestly in the background. Dr. Brownlow asked if he could be of any assistance, and receiving a. reply in the negative, withdrew, and returned to the group in the orchard. The sergeant was superintending the removal of the dead man to the mortuary at Arkley Strange affair, sir." said the sergeant. •' Very strange." said the doctor. Found any signs of a struggle, or anything of that sort ?" "No. I don't think there was any struggle," said the polioemaB. "You don't believe in this theory of an attempt to blackmail, and resistance or revenge, or anything of that eort ?" » "No, sir. We did at first. But then one of the men who found the body pointed out a curious thing." "What was that?" "Why, that from the way the body was lying, the murdered man must have been coming towards' the house when he saw shot." "Ah!" said the doctor. "So he was. And who was it pointed this out?" "A man whose name we took as a witness. A man named Williams." "Williams! Oil, I know him," said Dr. Brownlow. "And now, if there's nothing more I can do to help you, I must be getting back home. I'll give you my card." And he took one from his little card-case as he spoke. "I have a delicate niece with me, and I am anxious about the effect of this terrible buei- ness upon her. The poor girl was the first to discover the body." He bade the sergeant good-night, and returning to the lawn, found Lettice more dead than alive, pale, cold, and almost speech- less with nervous distress. He took her ten- derly back through the house, while Peveril, who had been fluttering about all over the place, and bawling out his opinioaie about the tragedy into everybody's ear, hastened aftef them, and insisted on returning with them to town. The doctor put them both into the fly which was waiting, and going back to the houee, pounced upon Williams, who was doing a little search on his own account in the dining-room. The doctor found him stooping by the sideboard, and before he could straighten himself again, the corner of a, letter, peeping out of his breast-pocket, caught the doctor 's eye. In a moment he had whipped it out, and read the name on the envelope: I" Miss Jane Ijenwiade." He laughed scornfully, and gave it back unopened to the guilty Williams, who in vain tried to maintain an attitude of grave a,nd resewed indifference. Take your letter," said Dr. Brownlow softly, and send it off if you like. And I wish you joy, my good fellow, of all your new friends." I don't understand you," said Williams coldly, but with an uneasy twitching of the eyelids. The doctor raised his eyebrows. o n will presently, ''Don't you? Well, you will presently J Good-night." And he left the house, and joined his companions in the fly. Williams shrugged his shoulders; but his attempt at an assumption of indifference was not so successful ae the doctor's. He went baok to the police officers, however, and after ascertaining that they had the work-box and its contents safely in their possession, repeated some words he had already used to them at the beginning of their search, by his directions, in the cupboard. If you don't find something to surprise you in that box, I'm a Dutchman." And again he told the story of his having seen the tenant of the house, Mrs. Gavel, on the previous evening, dropping a portion of the powder from the paper into the medi- cine of her patient, and then calmly avowing that it would ease him of all his pain. I'll come with you to the police-station," added Williams, who now that his horror and disgust over this second murder had made him communicative, had a nervous dread of being left alone. So when they had shut np the house for the night, leaving a eoupde of constables in charge, the sergeant and the rest of his men, having by this time despatched the body of the murdered man to the mortuary, started to return to Arkley. The tragic affair had got abroad by this time, and the streets were thronged. Impressed by the strange story, and the earnestnesc with which Williams gave his half-boastful, half-reluctant, evidence, the police-surgeon, who was sent for at once, ex- amined the mysterious box and the remains of the white powder in the paper. Williams, shaking like a leaf, waited for the result of his investigation. At last the surgeon came out, and looked at him with a grave fice. Williams stood up, his face white and wet. Well. what is it?" asked he hoarsely. Arsenic?" No," said the surgeon, shaking his head solemnly, it's—powdered sugar 1" CHAPTER XXII. Williams collapsed like a heap of rags before the police surgeon. Powdered sugar!" he echoed faintly. "Are you sure? Did you look in the right packet?'' "I examined all the contents of the box," said the surgeon. "There's nothing harmful in it. You've made a mistake, that's all. Nothing to worry about," he added, good- humouredly. The inspector was standing by, smiling in silence, and poor Williams began to stutter nnd atan)mer out indignant protests, under the impression that they were all laughing at him. Then the injector looked grave again. "No. no," said he, "you're mistaken, I assure you. I've no doubt you thought some- thing wall wrong at the time you saw the woman mixing the medicine; and then, when a murdered man is discovered on the pre- mises the very next day, it's perfectly natu- ral that you should think even more of the medicine incident than you did before. And you were quite right to mention it to us, quite right." The question was how much to tell? How much he could tell. in the first place, aDd how much he should tell in the second. For he had to acknowledge that, although he had many a shrewd suspicion, he had very little absolute knowledge, and still less proof of any nefarious proceedings on hie 8m- ployer's part. And he was reluctant to ux much about any action in which he himself had had a share. Thus, he could scarcely tell the police that he had been ordered by the doctor to follow Don Daresfeury a crow the Channel, with implied instructions to put him out of the waj, when be would have to tell, at the same time, of his brutal assault upon the young man. And as to his more usnal work of following people and obtaining addresses and other information for the doctor, he could give no proof whatever that this information was put to any improper use. A bright idea flashed into his mind. You have a revolver here, haven't youP" said he. "One that was found in a ditch behind The Ferns this afternoon?" Yes." said the inspector. "If you can tcll us anything to help up to trace that, yoa will do us a real service." The surgeon, who was etill present, looked as if he thought Williams a harmless lunatic, whose information conld hardly turn out to be of any value. Even the inspector had a subtle suggestion in his manner of spying something to oblige him ajid put him at his ease rather than of expecting any valuable hints from him. Indeed poor Willi rang, thoroughly de- moralised by the exciting events of the day, and by the awful discovers" at the end of it. looked such a ,qd. washed-out. woe-begone object that he did not inspire confidence. He. however, mnde n vaiiant effort to apeak calmly and deliberately as he said: I think I know something about that revolver. Of course, I may be wrong. Bat I'll describe it to you before you show it to me. If it's the one I can tell you, about, it has a mark on the barrel." "I'll have a look," said the inspector. By this time two or three other policemeH had come in, and were listening, interested, to this conversation. The revolver was locked up i7i a, desk, which the inspector opened. Williams remained at the other end of the room, with two or three pairs of eyes closely watching him. He was nervous, but earnest and very quiet. The inspector examined the weapon care- fully without bringing it into view. Well," said he, there is a mark on the barrel. Can you tell me what it is?" Williams replied steadily: It's four scratches," said he. very roughly done, that makes a D, a letter D." The inspector nodded- That's right enough." said he. Thert It the letter D scratched on it." Williams drew himself up 'with long breath. He felt a man again. TheI," said he, I can tell you where it was taken from." The inspector beckoned him across the floor, and took down his statement in writing, telling him to speak low, and not to get excited. Williams, full of zeal, and full of "ftink" also, obeyed the former injunction, but not the latter. And at last he was gratified by seeing from the inspector's manner that he was considered to have given an important clue. By the time he got outside, Williams's nerve had begun to fail him a little; and instead of returning to town that night, he got a bed in Arkley, within a hundred yards of the police station. It was a new sensation to this man, who bad. as he himself expressed it, sailed very near the wind a good many times in his life, to find himself what he called pals with the police," and he rather enjoyed the novel experience. He was able to exchange familiar greetings with the constable at the door as he passed the police-station on the following morning on his way to East Arkley, where he went direct to The Ferns, to find out if anything fresh had transpired there. He was in time to hear an exciting control versy between the policemen who were in charge of the house and Mrs. Gavel's two servants, who had just returned, and who were immensely surprised, alarmed, and in- dignant to find that instead of returning to their home as a matter of right, they were looked upon as intruders who had to give an account of their action. Of course, they had heard of the murder, bet they persisted that it took place a long way from the house, and that nobody in the household had any connection with it. Do you mean you went away because of the discovery that a murder bad been com- mitted?" asked the policeman who was arguing with Mrs. Fenner, the cook. "Lor' bless yon, no. We never heard nothing- of it till this morning, when wo got back here Mrs. Ca.vel. that's our mistress, she has a young man staying in the house, a. patient, very ill and sickly. And yesterday morning, first thing, she told us the place was too relaxing for him-as we tHfcught ourselves it was, seeing he got no-better, and she was talking him off to the seaside for a change. And she said we might take a holiday. it we was back at night." "Well, why weren't you. then?" said the policeman. "Why don't everybody do what they ougbt.t. retorted the cook. Yon might have had the house robbed," said he. Not with all you fine fellows about to look after us. replied she saucily. And now you can give 1U1 your nrist's address, so we can see you've told us no lies," said the policeman. The cook looked at the housemaid, and the housemaid laughed, shook her head, and looked at the cook. I don't believe she told us," said Mrs. Fenner. fflo be continued.)
