I PERSONAL PARS.
I PERSONAL PARS. I CHARLIE SLATER, Barry United, Is ono of the smartest half-backs playing- ill tne Cardiff and District League. TOM HINKINS, Maesteg, Once more ie a prominent figure in the team, and hie defence is as sound as ever. His play generally finds favour with the spectators. STEVE JONES, Aberdare. After hi sojourn north, made a welcome re- appearance last Saturday, and supplied a long-felt want by acquitting himself admirably in tjie centre. WILLIE BOWEN, of Llanhilleth, Is in fine form this season, and it is safe to say that not for some years has tiio Llanhilleth team had such an excellent wing three-quarter. He is exceedingly fast. E. FIELDS, Cinderford, Is one of the finest backs in the county. He has always been of great service to his club. His defensive jlay leaves nothing to be desired. He is-a good kick with either foot. T. Parry, Tredegar, Gives every promise of developing into a strong useful wing. His experience is not yet very wide, but he shows splendid daøh when going for the line. He has a very good turn of speed. GEORGE SIMMONDS, Llanhilleth, Is one of the smartest centres Llanhilleth ever had. He plays a sound defensive game, and. with a team of more aggressive tactics, George would be still more prominent than he is. W. BROAD, Whitchurch, The oldest member of the Whitchurch team is a forward of ripe experience, and ai useful member for any pack. A tendency to do too much "on his own" mars what would otherwise be a good display of the forward game. JIM PRICE, Pontypool, Is going very strong jurt now, and if there are any Welsh caps to be distributed amongst Monmouthshire League forwards this season, Price ought certainly to be singled out for honours. He is a splendid type of a forward, and not afraid of hard work. ABE EVANS, Treherbert, is a centre of great merit, and ia able to handle the ball Treorky was not seen to much advantage. To-day he is a centre of great merit, and isable to handle ths ball with precision. His kicking abilities have been proved on many occasions to be a source of great aid to his colleagues when being sorely pressed. M. SU TTON, of Dinas Powis, At full back gave a very finished display last Satur- day. He is strong in defence, his kicking is of excellent length, and ha rarely fails to find touch. The villagers congratulate themselves on possessing such a full back, which is an important factor in the ranks of a Rugby team. BOB JONES, Treorky, The well-known Rhondda. forward, again plays for Treorky this season. He did not appear in the arena. so early this year as usual, but his play is improving very much now, and his exhibition lost Saturday was better than anything he bas yet done this year. He was included in the Welsh toam against Ireland in 1901. [MARTIN, of Pontnewydd, Scored the try which gave his side' the lead at the Cwmbran match on Saturday. It was a btauty, and the way that player went for the line was a treat to eee. Possessing » good turn of speed, combined with great strength, and any amount of pluck, Martin is a wing that takes a lot of stopping, and, with a little more experience, will bccome a fiiyt-class uaaa. |j. G. DAVIES, Caerphilly, Founder and secretary of the Caerphilly United, has left the district with the good wishes of all his club- mates. During the time he has been connected with the United he has done much to help the club to attain the position which it now holds. Caerphilly people hope that the services of Mr. Davies, who has done much to encourage honest sport in the town, will not be allowed to be overlooked. "CHICK" JAMES, Abertillery, Is, without doubt, one of the strongest halves in the league. Young, very sturdily built, deadly in defence, dangerous in attack, and a splendid kick, "Chick" has all tho qualities for making a great half-back. He must, however, train hard to let more speed, and also study the finer phasea of tne game. His try in the Pontypool match was a capital effort, and he also Ishowed fine defence all through.

FOOTBALL SKETCHES
FOOTBALL SKETCHES I SWANSEA'S NARROW VICTORY I Cardiff's Play a Surprise. I rny FORWARD. How much longer is the Swansea record destined to remain intact ? Cardiff had a second shot at it on Saturday, and Newport will have the privilege of play- ing with the precious thing next Saturday at Rodney- parade. How seldom, by tne way, do we see the name of the Newport ground published. When I come to think of it, I óo not remember having ever previously I written down the name before, and if one would seek a reason it can best be found, perhaps, in its some- what unsavoury character. And yet there is nothing in the ground or its environment to indicate any con- I, nection with anybody or anything updesirable. There was at least one great man who was registered by his parents in the name of Rodney, and maybe he had I something to do with that part of Newport before it was given up to football and athletics. Anyhow, Swan- sea will take their record to the famous arena in a week hence, and all the worla of Rugby will watch for the result of the match with their nerves at high tension. Last Saturday comparatively few people were prepared tc see such a determined onslaught being made by Cardiff upon the Swansea citadel, and there lias been no greater surprise this season than the great game played by the blue and blacks. Gwyu Nicholls, as captain, meant business, and his spirit of earnestness imparted itself to every one of the fourteen men under his command. In the past the Cardiff men have been twitted with leaving their hearts behind them at Lan- dore, and on many occasions there was much truth in the taunt. But they have outlived that feeling of nervous dread, and they can now be depended upon to and fight to the go forth lik(? Cromwell's Ironsides and fight to the last ditch, whether the arena be their own or that ot any other club. A team incapable of doing this has no claims to greatness. Faint hearts are no good in big fights, and Saturday's match at St. Helen's came under that heading. The play has been already commented upon exten- sively, but at no time this season Lave I felt my sub- ject lending itself f'l0 easily to supplementary treat- ject lending it-%elf so eastii?'y e Cardiff forwards have net ment. In the first place, the Cardiff forwards have net been given their full mead of praise for their magnifi- cent play. For many yearq the strength of Cardiff in front has not been quite up to the uniform standard of Newport and Swansea in this department, and there has been a good deal of secret disappointment and soreness of heart among the supporters of the club on this account. But now the right men have been found, and there is such excellent good feeling existing among the players that a steady improvement cau be confidently looked for until the end of the season has come about. With two or three exceptions, the for- wards have youth on their side, and the older ones have the advantage of experience, which is a very necessary virtue. Every man of the eight of them is I a trier, and would shun the suspicion of being a shirker just as he would the plague. Swansea people, to my own personal knowledge, were fairly taken aback by the skill of the metropolitan eight in controlling the scrums and heeling out the bail. It too them some II little 'ime to settle down, and in that time the Swansea balvei got the ball, and made such good use of it that Tr6w was enabled to score. "Hallo, there's going to be another rout," said some, overjoyed Swansea man on the grand stand, when the ball was brought Mt for the goal-kirk. From th?t. time onward, however, that person had time to reflect upon the folly of his words. The Cardiff forwards were heeling with clock- work regularity, and Dicky David was having a high old time at their heels. He was whipping tM ball out beautifully and giving Dicky Owen a lot of trouble generally. David simply revelled in his good work, Md- it was with mingled feelings of pride and gratitlllle that Cardiff people on the ground watched him per- form, for it was palpable that one-half of the half-bask problem, at any rate, had been solved. Scrines, play- ing as a wing forward, tried tne old game of pushing out his leg and thus obstructing David as he was gotag round to pay his compliments to the wide-awake Owen. But David was equal to the occasion. He gave one or two sharp kicks to the obstructing limb, and the owner thereof very discreetly withdrew it. It was after the ball had left David that Cardiff's weakness deve- loped itself. Griff Hughes, as an inside half, could not be expected to play the outside game as we like to see it played; Timms was slow in getting off the mark, and the tackling was so keen that the passing Was ineffective. It did not seem likely that the defeaoe would be pierced, but at last Griff Hughes showed him- self at his best with a smart break away on the blind side of the serum, and, with Nicholls dancing atten- dance upon him, he tiined his pass to a nicety, and went over in the corner after shaking off George Davies. Then came the interval, and after the players )aM, been set going again tha s.erne?9t battle of the seasqB, witnessed. aga;e tiruytle in ==' earnest. They asked for no quarter, and they ,a, none. The forward., on ei.hl1l' side were all in the finest fettle, and worked like Titans to give them every ouncc of their strength and every scrap of their skill". It was a battle of giants, and, taken on tho whole, the forward play reached an exceptionally higb. level. Ilriee and Neill were, perhaps, the most promi- nent of the Cardiff lot, but the others were so awee -on their heels that I hesitate somewhat to mention their names. On the Swansea side Joseph, Parker, D. J. Thomas, and Sid Bevan were in the. Van all through, the last-mentioned in particular proving fclm- eelf a sterling schnuaa?er. Parker on a coi ?1,; occasions was rather too -igoroue. and Gwyn b Is, who is the last tn&u in the world to complain uu'ul" j felt justified in protesting. T!lQ game, however, warn not marred by so many of those regrettable instances v.liich went a long W\Y to spoil thA first match betwom the two teams, and the referm-is deserving of all pra4a for the admirable way Jn which hd OutroUad t- players and conducted the game. The finish was a memorable oce. Swansea pulled-the. match out of the fire in the very last minute, and they can feel thankful to Dick Jones as the instigat* of the developer-in-chief of the attack, which culmi- nated in victory. He caught Timms napping in watt- ing for him to part with the bail instead of tackling him straight away, as he had done in almost every other instance throughout the game. Timms was mmt useful as a bustling tackier, and his keenness was largely the means of upsetting the calculations of the Swansea three-quarters. Gabc, too. played right on hia opponent, snd his smartness- in converting defence Into attack and his powerful runs established his title to the credit of being the best of the centre three- I quarters. Strangely enough, the ball seldom went te the left wing, and tne. consequence was that Biggs and Jowett were spectitors during the greater portion of the game. Winfield had rather the better of tOo deal with George Davies. his kicking being superior, while his p)ay all round was quite equal to that of the old international centre. It wil not be till February that Cardiff and Swassee will meet again, and I wonder whether they will then be in possession of that pearl of great price—their record.
[FOOTBALL BYE-WAYS
[FOOTBALL BYE-WAYS A WORD IN TIME HINTS TO THREE-QUARTERS. In a learned treatise on this most important asset to football, the Welsh captain observes:—"Quick per- ception, -steady nerve, and tho ability to seize oppor- tunities are three of the most necessary qualifications of a three-quarter." I grant this, and only add that if a player is possessed of these virtues ho should he simply ideal, from one point of view, at any rate. But when these qualities are denied a man (as is often the case), it becomes neces- sary that other, if inferior, means should be adopted to make a player of him. The first thing to acquire. of course, is speed, with the ability to dodge when necessary. This is very easy. Simply acquire a horde of Creditors whom you meet very frequently. It is very surprising how soon you will acquire a fine, dodgy run-a great qua11ty in a three-quarter. The next thing to study is receiving a pass. If you have large hands this difficulty Is soon overcome, but whether your hands are large or small, it is necessary to use them in receiving a pass. On no account should you use your fae-it has no holding power, aDd you are apt to spoil a good opening by so doing. When the art of receiving the ball has been successfully achieved, the difficulty then arises, "What te do with 1 It r, There are various ways of getting rid ef IL U you are ambitions you try to run with ft as far as your opponents' line, but in most casee ft becomes Moassary to part before you can think of getting tbere. The next Beat thing to dA-JT&Hlfcire, Is to try and .pn locaft ba go,& be wreful that it is to one of your own side you are throwing the hall at. And, apain, do not pass to the referee-he may not be playing for your side. Should passing be of no advantage, do not drop the ball altogether, but kick (the ball, not an opponent), and always remember to kick in the direction of your opponents' line, and, it possible, to find touch or drop a goal or something of that sort. As regards defence (which is' sometimes important), a good deal depends on yourself—and the size of your opponents; but I would mention that if you have the srallantrv to tackle a man, always be careful to grip him firmly round the body or legs. If you attempt to bring him down by the hair or iersey, the chances are that you find yourself grovelling in the mud with a handful of hair (or jersey), whila vour intended victim triumphantly sails over your line. ! PENYGRAIG.
PENYGRAIG. The PenY3r^i™ team are just now in par- ticularly good form, and their big win over Pontypridd last Saturday was richly de- served, for each man contributed his fair share towards obtaining it. I Pontypridd accepted th-eir defeat like. the sportsmen we know that they are, and freely acknowledged that on the day's form they were fairly and squarely beaten. Fred Lewie, the young Pontypridd wine. played an excellent game, and was the main- stay of the visiting back division; but no one would more freely admit than Lewis that the best three-quarter on the field was Simmonds. who has never played such a great game f yt Penygraig. It seem,-d to be his day out. for he was here, there, and everywhere, and his dropped goal was a real beauty. Capital play was often contributed by the two wings, Treharne and Thomas, and If the present form of the quartette be maintained, the crowd who frequent the Belle Vue matches will be given their money's worth. Shugar, Dick Thomae. Mort. and Llew Evans played a great forward game, and no better four forwards can be seen in any toagn. If the present enthusiasm that prevail# amongst the players be maintained, tne team will prove a, very hard nut to crack. The match was most pleasantly contested, and there was no ill-feeling manifested from beginning to end. This ie as thongs ought to be, and it would not be out of place to say that this was in no email measure due to the excellent refereeing of Mr. J. B. Mathew.
P ILL HARRIERS
P ILL HARRIERS The contest for the Monmouthshire Lovaim Championship is resolving itself now all inte- resting struggle, in which the Pixl Harrier* continue to hold their position. Two more points were gained at the expense of Tre- dega.r, who were previously undefeated ja. league games. The Pill forwards ha.ve not been ciwa, credit for their share in the victory at Trs* degar. Admittedly lighter than their awcp. nenta, when clevernese was neoessaxs, onlr one pack was playing. This is mainly das: to the advice and experience of Travers, the Pill international. The Pill baoks were in One form at Tkw degar. Byan and Buckley, at oentre, per- formed prodigies; Llewellyn is as fast as ever, and scored a ep lend id try, after good work by Byan. Charlie Cousins was sound, and is improving. Blaina visit the Dockers' endosare to-day. and a. good game should result. The fixtars of the month, however, will be the visit of Brynmawr on the 19th. Pillites are anxuMs to see their favourites gain a substantial win. The game at Brynmawr was won by the home team by one oonverted goal to 4no try.
