"Have you found out anything?" she asked hoarsely. v "Not much. mise," said William*. -1 don't know that there's anything to find out here, at any rate. There don't seem to be as much as a cat left about the place." "I vote we take you back to Town, Mies Brownlo-w," said Peveril. "I'm sure it isn't good for you to be sitting out here 80 late, and we can do no good by watehing an empty house, can we?" But Lettice shook her head. "There must be something to be dis- covered," she said emphatically. "It stands to reason that a houae is not deserted like this without any notice, without some strong reason. You're searched the house, you say? And you've found out nothing? Well, now we'll search the grounds." Both the men looked askance at the notion. To hunt about in the dark for signs of a supposed tragedy was to the liking of neither. "We'd better leave it till the morning," said Peveril. "Then I'll stay here till the morning," retorted Lettioe. How can you expect me to rest till I know?" The words burst forth from her lips so pas- sionately that they saw there was no with- standing her. "All right," said Williams, guilrily. Pil see if I can get a lantern." Oh, there's plenty of light to look about without that," said the girl, impatiently, as she turned into the first gravel walk that she came to, and began to peer about among the growing vegetables and gooseberry bushes. It was a, great rambling garden, with tall hedges of yew dividing a patch devotad to roses from another patch which was partly a kitchen and partly a flower garien. Then, there was another lawn, where tennis used to be pl&yed. and a long strip of orchard between this and the fields. Poveril lingered for the lantern, but Lettioe started on the search of the rose-garden with- out delay. She was surprised at herself for not having begun her investigations sooner. The rose-boshes had but few blossoms now. and suoh scent as came from them was chiefly that of dead and dying petals. That sense of melancholy which an old garden at twilight always produces seized the girl strongly as she peered on the ground between the bushes, and into the hedge beyond. For the first time since her arrival at The Ferns she was alone, and the silence appalled her. More and more sure that she would "find something," that this dusky twilight garden must have some horrible secret to yield up, since the house had none, she hurried on, leaving the roses behind her, to the patch where the fruit bushes grew, and then on over thtn86eon3 lawn towards the orchard! A wooden fence separated the orchard from the garden, and she passed through by a. little gate, from which a path ran over the grass among the fruit trees, terminating in a gate in the outer wall, which the house- hold used when they wanted to take a short cut through the fields from the village to Arkley itself. It was dark under the trees, and unconsciously Lettice slackened her steps, peeping and -peering in the silence until at last she stopped short with a half- smothered sob. She had caught sight of something on the path in front of her, not far from the outer wall. She haJf-turned, tried to cry out, recovered herself, and went on, fascinated by what she saw, until she was within a very few feet of the dark object in the garden. Nearer and nearer she came. with staring eyes, holding her breath, watching for the slightest movement in the dark mass. But there was none. She was close upon it now, she bent down. she almost touched it. And at last her voice came back, and she uttered a piercing cry. For, lying on the ground on its face, was the body of a dead man. CHAPTER XXI. The scream uttered by Lettios brought Peveril Hatch to the spot in the middle of the orchard, where she was standing, the pio- ture of terror and dismay. "What is it? What have you founds cried he, as he ran. But she could not speak; she could only point to the dead man, cowering and recoil- ing as she did so, and turning her eyes away as quickly as possible from the terrible sight. "By Jove!" He was on his knees, on the ground, examining the body, as Williams came up with a lantern. "Who—who is it?" cried the latter hoarsely. And Lettice raised her head to hear the answer. "It's Maclean," cried Peveril. "Dead. And cold. He must have been lying here for hours." There was a moment's silence. Then Wil- liams, who was trembling so much that he could scarcely hold the lantern, said hoarsely: "I—I must tell—the police! This is the second—the second. murder! It's awful! awful!" He stammered out the words like a frightened schoolboy, and reeled to this side and that as he turned to walk back to the house. "The fellow's upset!" said Peveril, who was now on his feet again. "And no wonder! Now Miss Brownlow, you'll. have to give up your friend Dareebury. There can be no mistake about this. It's murder, and young Da res- bury's the man who did it." Lettice could not answer. She shrank away, staggered back to the lawn near the house, and, sinking upon the rustic seat under the beech tree, sat there, mute and shivering while the hurrying to and fro began. For in the first place the policeman who had been on duty outside the house was brought in by Williams, and led to the orchard, where the dead man was lying. And then Dr. Brownlow, attracted by the noise of rapid footsteps and whispering voices, came to one of the windows and asked what was the matter. "They've found-a. dead man, uncle," gasped Lettice. "In the orchard." "What? Who is it?" It was Peveril Hatch, who had by this time run back towards the house, who answered him. "It's the gardener, Maclean, Dr. Brownlow. Come at once, please, and tell us, if you oan, what killed him. You needn't tell us who it was!" "Did you find him? Find the murderer?" asked the doctor quickly, as he hurried towards him. "Find him! No such luck. He's taken I precious good care to take himself off. just as his father did after his performance in the eame line!" said Peveril, falkfncas he walked. "Toti mr mon-L GIII8 woadera how hs oooid w— have the cheek, to go and do almost the MUM thing. It's a monomania in the family, of course. The Daresburys must be insane! "Dareeburys, eh?" said the doctor. "Why," said the policeman, "then it was peared, just as his father did when the butler Reed was murdered? Can there be any doubt who did it?" "Hush!" said the doctor. "One mustn't take things for eranted like that. I should say myself that the very fact of one murder hav- ing been committed by a member of the family-if that was indeed the case, maJns it less likely that another would be committed in the same way. Did you find any weapon?" "I didn't. I don't know whether the others have found anything." "What others?" "Oh, that fellow we found here, Williams, and the policeman." "Who called the pe^ioemajB?" Mked the doctor. "Williams did." The doctor said nothing to this, aad in a few more strides they reached the spot, where already a couple of idlers, who had been near enough to hear the policeman called in, had joined the group round the body of the young gardener. More lights were fetched, and before carry ing the dead body of the man away. Dr. Brownlow, at the request of the policeman. made an examination, the result of which wae that he was able to state definitely two things: the first was that the man had been dead some hours y and the second that he had been killed by being shot through the head. from behind, and at close quarters. "Why," said the policeman, then it was very likely done by the revolver that WM found out in the fields there this afternoon." "Where was that?" asked Dr. Brownlow. "In the ditch that runs between two of the fields," cried two or three voices together, pointing through the trees. y "Have you got the revolver?" "It's at the police-station, sir." "I must see it, and if we can find the bullet, or bullets—for it looks to me as if there wet a traces of two shota-we shall disoover whether that may not have been the weapon used." "Does anyone know anything about this man?" asked the policeman. "I knew him well," cried Peveril NiAeb.. always prompt to speak. He was one of the under-gardeners at my father's place, Hatoh Place, down at Cambermere, and he was there when a man was murdered, and he's been going about saying he knew who did it." There was a murmur at this sensational piece of information, and then the policeman asked: "Do you know what he was doing hafe. sir?" "I am sorry to say that yesterday evening I gave him the address of a gentleman was staying here," said the doctor, in ft troubled voice. "He came to my house, and asked for the address, and would not be denied." ..Yee, gentleman named Daresbury," oaM Peveril Hatch glibly. "Who was staying here," went on the doe- tor, "under the name of Smith." There was a fresh sensation among the bystanders, who had by this time increased in number. "Yes," said Peveril, in the same confident manner. "And this Mr. Daresbury, aliaa Smith, is the son of a man who disappeared from Hatch Place after the murder of the butler, Reed, just as his son has now dis- appeared after the murder of this poor beggar! There was a louder murmur, which both Dl*. Brownlow and the policeman tried to suppress by reminding the outspoken young man that they knew very little at present. much too little to form a definite opinion upon. But Peveril was not to be silenced. "I tell you, it's as plain as can be," said he, "that this fellow tried to levy blackmail upon young Daresbury, who shot him through the head aa the only way to get rid of him. That's my opinion, and Dares- bury can have me up for slander if he likes!" This challenge which he uttered with great spirit, could scarcely be taken up, and Peveril remained master of the situation, with the reputation of a man of dash and daring. While this was going on in the orchard, there began to appear, one by one, lights in the different windows of the house, and Dr. Brownlow, noticing this, rose to his feet, UId asked a man, who came running from Uste direction at the moment, who was inside. It's some of the police, sir," said the man. and there's more of 'em coming on here." And as he spoke the sergeant whom Dr. Brownlow had found at The Ferns that after- noon came up, saluted, and stated that a thorough search was being made of the house. I wonder if I can be of any use," said the doctor. I knew all the people living here. and. perhaps, I might be able to give informa- tion the searchers want." I Much obliged, sir, if you will." said the sergeant, who went on to the orchard, while the doctor re-entered the house. He listened on the threshold, and, rcoognis- ing a voice he knew in the store-room, a little, and opened the door of that room, where he found two policemen and Williams examining the contents of the cupboard oat of which Mrs. Cavel had taken the medietas the workbox, and the white powder. What Williams had told the officers it wet impossible to say, as the conversation among the three men ceased when the doctor entered the room. But the latter saw that the work-box was open upon the table, and that inside it there lay a paper which had been opened, and in which lay a glistening white powder. What have you got there, eh?" said bik The officer refolded the paper, and pob fit back in the work-box, which he Jtocked ead tucked under his arm. I don't know, sir," said he, but, whaitew it is, we're taking it to the station with om, and there we can look at it more cloeeJy." "Weal, it's an odd thing to vorry yourself about an old lady's packets of tea and sugar." sail the doctor, as he glanced at the cup- board, and saw the array of blue bags and white bags, tins and jars which the ahalvea contained.
