[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] j A BLACK REVENGE. I By FLORENCE WARDEN, J Author of "The Secret of Princess Paul," The House on.. the Marsh," <fcc. I SYNOPSIS.. Don Daresbury meets Pcveril Hatch (lord BiMgnl eldest sen) in Carsmere Church one June eveni n-g- Hatch has been rude to beautiful Jane Lellwae, whosfe ztevoted ]over Don is. The men's cOMMI-t advances Don's interests, however, for he straign way asks and meeives hi: millionaire father's "Ssiol to make Miss Lcnwade his wife. The Hatches are very pocr. and have let Hatcn Place to the Dues- burys. Father and son are great friends, but disagT about Raod, the butler, who appears to have secret influence ever Daresbuiy senior. A family picture is the cause of Don's hecorr.ing the prey of vague terrors, and the shocked surprise with which his fatter meets a Dr. Brownlow, who has come to the place with Lord Binegar, further increases this disquietude. On the morning of a garden party Mr. Daresbury is suddenly taken ill. Eon connects the seizure with a newspaper paragraph, especially in view of the butler's strange behaviour. Later in the afternoon the butler is discovered in his master's study—murdered! The alarm is given at. once, and doctors called in t: examine the body. In spite of Lord Biregar's efforts to hush the matter up, the doctors come to the conclusion that the butler has been murdered, and has not committed suicide. At the suggestion of a policeman an adjoining room, whose door opens into the room where the tragedy bas happened, is about to be searched, when the door is unlocked from the far side, and Don Daresbury appears, pale and covered with fresh blood-stains. Don explains to the horrified spectator, in a d--zed way, that he was so shocked at finding the murdered butler that be lost control of himself. Lord Binegar counsels him to keep out of the way for a time, but Don, seeing that he is suspected, refuses, and is confirmed and encouraged in his resolution by his sweetheart. On going to break the news to Mr. Dares- bury, the Viscount and Dr. Brownlow find that he has disappeared, whilst the Viscount suspects the Doctor of tampering with a letter addressed to Don, which was fcund on his father's dressing-table. Don is much distressed at his father's absence, but is greatly comforted by Jane and her mother, the latter asking him over to her house to distract his attention. On the way there, he learns some strange things about Dr. Brownlow from his niece, who dislikes him mucil. Don receives a telegram from his father, telling him to join him in Paris. On the way he is assaulted, left senseless, and robbed of his papers and money. After Don's departure, Mrs. Lenwade and Jane take up their residence in Dr. Brownlow's London house. Jane is eventually adopted by the Doctor, who insures her life for 410,000, and takes her and Mrs. Lenwade for a holiday to the seaside. CHAPTER XVI.-Continued. The reply came through that Mr. Williams had not been there since early in the day. Again and again in the course of the even- ing did the doctor make the same inquiry, but always with the same result. And on th<? following morning the process was repeated, while a telegram sent to Williams's private and strictly modest address got no answer. It wa,8 not until late in the day, just as the doctor and his niece were sitting down to dinner, that Williams, looking more seedy, more unshaven, more unkempt than ever, called at Ghent House, and was at once, by the doctor's orders, shown into the study. Lettice looked up with shrewd inquiry in her eyes, when a servant announced that Mr. Wil- liams was waiting to see the doctor. The latter rose at once. ".Don't wait for me, my love," he said, gently; "this man may keep me some minutes." When the doctor got to the study, he per- ceived at once in the attitude and manner of his rather dilapidated visitor, a changs for the worse. W&en 'Williame was in luck. he was buoyant, jocular, and offensively familiar. When be was out of luck, he was actually crestfallen and meek. But now, though he was decidedly not in a prosperous condition, he was surly, curt and almost menacing. The doctor, noting these points, even as he entered, was stern and severe beyond his wont. "What do you mean. Williams. by turning up in this condition?" Sharp upon his words came the retort: "What condition?" "You haven't shaved to-day, for one thing, and your collar looks as if you had slept in it." "So I have," retorted Williams sullenly. "I've been served a dirty trick by your Mrs. Cavel, who shut me up, locked me in, and never let me out till this morning." "This morning! That's a long time ago! You should have come straight to me; and instead of that you've spent your time in the pubs on the way." "That's my look out. The money I earn by your dirty work I've a right to spend in my own way. Perhaps the doctor saw that it would ba dangerous to carry high-handed measures too far. At any rate, after a few seconds' pause, during which an unpleasant gleam had shone for a. moment in his soft brown eyes, he laughed, and said more amiably: "Well, well, sit down, and tell me the news." "Well, I followed the young woman, watched her do her shopping, stood outside Marshall and Snelgrove's a bloomin' hour, and Dickens aud Jones's a bloomin' hour and half. Then she took the train from Paddington." "Paddington? For the City?" said the doc- tor quickly. "No. for East Arkley." The doctor's face changed. "Go on." :'1 She went to M?. Gavel's. I waited there another hour or thereabouts, and when she came out, she spotted me." "Ah! That's not like you! You'd been at the Red Cow or the Green Man, I 6uppoee?" Perhaps I had." said Williams sulkily. "Anyhow, she spoke to me. And she didn't know who Mr. Smith was, so I suppose she hadn't seen him." The doctor nodded in satisfaction. "What had she been doing there, then?" "How should I know? I felt sorry for her, that I did! And I'm a precious sight more sorry for the poor young fellow; for to get away from Miss Lenwade I went into the grounds of The Ferns, and I saw your friend, Mrs. Cavel, preparing a dose for her invalid. Was it by your orders, doctor?" Anything more bland, more nobly simple than the demeanoor of the doctor when this question was put to him, it is impossible to imagine. "A dose? By my orders? No. You know I've given up prescribing long ago. Young Daresbury is the psutient of Dr. Farrel], and whatever medicine he gets is by his prescrip- tion." "Not this one," said Williams, with a. confi- dent shake of the head. The doctor looked him straight in the eyes. Surely, you don't mean that this woman-" .11 .a. 'I: or -is poisoning mm, x.iat Ball. i ougnin-z- to be surprised, I suppose, after what you wanted me to do. But, hang it, governor, I think you might draw the line at poison!" The doctor flew at him, seised him by the throat, and shook him like a rat. "You dare to say such a thing to me! You dare, you rascal, to read your own evil meaoo- ings into what you hear and what you see! I tell you, rascal and murderer as I believe this young Daresbury to be, I wouldn't have a hair of his head injured with my consent!" As usual, "Williams grew weak aa the doctor grew assertive. He tried to release himself, and said meekly: "Here, hold hard, governor, I didn't meaa any harm! Things do look fishy down there, you know! Very Ash3r4 And X-m. Oavel seems to be pretty well as much trader your thumb as I am, you know!" "It's not by my orders that she does such things as you imply," said the doctor, letting him get away, and rearranging his own neck- tie, which viotaat cKertkms had diecoek posed. "And I'll take the very first oppo" tunity of letting her know what I thijik of them. I can't but think, however, that yotf are mistaken in what you say you saw." Before Williams could reply there ca.me knock at the study door, and the parlourmaid came in with the announcement, that a ma. outside, who gave the nnw of Maclean, wwa asking for Mr. Donald Daresbury'a address. "And he says, sir, that lie won't go till htt gets it." added the maid. The doctor looked surprised. "Well," said he, after a second's passe, "it that is so, you must let hi:n have it." Wil- liams ftared. "Tell hinpi that Mr. Donald Daresbury is staying at The Ferns, East Arkley, at the house of Mrs. Cavel, and that he is staying there under the name of Smith/f added he. "Yes, sir," said ,the maid as she withdrew. "Who is this Maclean?" asked Williams. "He's the man who knows, or says he knows. who it was that murdered Mr. Daresburyle butler," said the doctor, as he offered WVk" liams his hat and glanced at the door. > Williams gave him one long look. "Then God help him!" said he as he waoi out. CHAPTER XVII. Dr. Brownlow did not take the trouble feg accompany Williams to the front door, bate watched him from the mat outside the stady until his visitor had shambled along tlte hall as far as the hat-stand where he came to a dead stop. The next moment he was hurrying baek. "I say, governor," he began. He was shamefaced, humble. But the doctor was bland and forgiving. Cutting him short with a wave of his long white hand, he saidf- smiling: Yes, I thought, you'd forgotten soma* thing Hew much, eh?" And with a lordly air lie took out a handful of sovereigns, and looked down at them ill the half-light. Williams whistled. Quids weren't always eo plentiful sO they've been lately, eh?" remarked he. "Jj wish I had half your luck!" W, ell. so you will have, I dare say, eonm* day, if you only keep straight, and o' orders," replied the doctor. "Come, ho* much?" I'll take the blessed lot." replied William.. making a grab at the proffered hand. The doctor only laughed as his visitor swepfc the six or seven golden pieces into his pockeu- and, with a nod which was almost grateful* hurried out of the house. Then Dr. Brownlow returned to the dining room, dined rapidly while his niece was finishing her dessert, and telling her that iii. had a lot of letters to write, bade her good- night, and retired to his study, after he hact had his lamp lighted and everything pre- pared for a hard evening's work. He and Lettice, therefore, did not meefe again until breakfast time next morning., when he was particularly bright and amiable,. while she, on the other hand. was pale andl nervous, having, as she told him, scaroely; slept all night. How was that, my dear?" asked he„ "You took coffee, I suppose. Why do you? Yow know ityalways keeps you awake." "I didn't," said she. "I don't know what- it is that made me so restless, but I was; waking up and down my room half the, night, frightening myself with fancies, think- ing I heard burglars in the house, and cri. Uncle," she went on, looking at him anxiously, I must know how Don Daresbury is. Will you drive me down there to-dayp" The doctor shook his head reluctantly. I don't see how I can to-day," he sai<L thoughtfully. To-morrow I might, perhaps, Will that do?" It must do, I suppose," eaid she impatiently. Look here," said he, I'll send Williamw down to East Arkley, if yen like, with a. message, or some book, or anything you. please. I'll give him strict orders to see Mr* Daresbury, and to report to you how h. looking. Will that do?" It will be better than nothing," lIal. Lettioe, without enthusiasm, for her opinion; of Mr. Williams was not high. Dr. Brownlow took her into his study, and; let her hear him telephone the meassaw through to Williams, whom he directed to gor to East Arliley that day. with a small hamper- of fruit from Covent Garden, which the doctca- (.rdered at the same time. Williams was tot see Mr. Daresbury, and to ascertain how was getting on, and then to come straigtHj to Ghent House to report progress. "Now are you satisfied?" he asked, turiM ing with an indulgent smile, to pat h niece's shoulder. Ye—es, thank you," said she. "Thanii you. very much." And she left the room. For intercourse, between, her and her uncle had grown, during the last few days, artificial and difficult., 0It her side at least. She had written to Jane. asking for an explanation of her interrupted speech about Marian. But she had as yq4 received no answer. The day seemed long and tedious. If had dared, she would have gone down to Sfc* Leonard's, in spite of her uncle's expresse d wish that she should not do so. But beaideg her own physical weakness, which was great,- and which had caused the journey froft Scarborough to make her almost ill, Lattick for all her bravado upon occasion, held hoit adopted uncle in a certain awe, which madei her reluctant to disobey him. And she had h6M assurance that Jane was coming up tot town in a day or two. so that it seemed better to await that event. The monotony of the day was broken by ttttt announcement that Mr. Peveril Hatch wia in the drawing-room. How she hated Peveril Hatch, although she had only seen him once; but that was on that day of the garden party which had broken if so tragically; and his manner and words .J8i' that occasion had been euoh ae wer% calculated to leave a lasting impression.
